At the table

Voice

His voice has a dry, grainy rasp, like a spade cutting through gravel. Years of cold air and dust give his consonants a faint scrape, while his old hill dialect lengthens certain vowels. He speaks at a steady pace and has a habit of ending statements with a small breath through his nose.

He speaks in practical clauses and concrete images, often borrowing terms from digging, weather, and burial. He rarely uses metaphor unless it comes from his trade. He avoids the word 'monster' and calls undead 'the unquiet.'

Speech patterns

Uses plain, workmanlike terms for frightening things, calling a haunting a 'bad tenant' and a corpse a 'late sleeper.'
Asks practical questions before moral ones: who is missing, where they fell, and whether anyone has a shovel.
When uncertain, repeats a person's last few words as a question, buying himself time to decide whether he trusts them.
Does not threaten loudly; states what he will do as if describing tomorrow's weather.

How to play them

Dast responds to concrete evidence and demonstrated care for the dead. Treating him as a monster makes him defensive; asking who he has buried earns a rare moment of honesty. He may accept a truce if the party helps him locate Hedd or promises proper burial for the Company’s victims.

Goal

Find Hedd before the Company does, protect him long enough to reveal the truth, and decide whether Dast can publicly turn against the champions he once served.

Motivation

He wants to make the dead count for something, but fears that admitting the Company betrayed him would mean admitting he helped it.

Secret · GM only

Appearance

Dast has a broad, shovel-shaped face and the compact, solid presence of someone who has spent decades moving earth by hand. His hands are the first thing people notice: thick, blunt-fingered, and permanently dark in the creases despite aggressive scrubbing, with calluses ridged like old bark. When he stands still, he leans lightly on his spade; when he walks, his steps are measured and quiet, as if testing the ground before trusting it. An unexpected detail for a feared grave robber is the tiny, meticulously mended patchwork bird sewn inside his collar, visible when his coat shifts.

Clothing

A soot-brown wool coat reinforced at the elbows, a high-necked linen shirt, patched trousers, and mud-caked boots. His coat smells faintly of wet clay and cedar smoke. A small piece of blue-and-white bird-patterned cloth is sewn inside the collar.

Body language

He plants his feet as if bracing against a stubborn shovel stroke. His eyes track hands, exits, and loose ground in that order. When ashamed, he rubs his thumb over a smooth notch in the wooden spade haft; when furious, he grips the haft and takes one deliberate step closer rather than gesturing.

Distinguishing features

His hands are permanently dark in the creases, with thick, ridged calluses from years of digging.
The wooden haft of his iron spade is worn smooth in one thumb-shaped hollow, where his hand has rested through thousands of shifts.
A tiny, carefully repaired bird-patterned patch is sewn inside his collar, an unexpectedly tender keepsake.

Personality

14 traits and drives

Dast is blunt about work and surprisingly patient with grief, yet impatient with people who turn suffering into a speech. He follows a chain of command until an order endangers someone helpless, then his stubbornness becomes immovable. Around strangers he is guarded and practical; among the bereaved he softens, offering water and silence rather than comfort he cannot promise. He can be tender with the dead and frighteningly hard on the living who exploit them.

Alignment
Lawful neutral

Quirks

Taps a doorframe twice with one knuckle before entering, a habit from checking whether old grave sheds are sound.
Arranges cups and bowls with their handles pointing toward the nearest exit.
Keeps a pebble from every place he has buried someone and sorts them by weight rather than location.
Stops mid-conversation to brush imaginary soil from his cuffs.
When offered food, asks first whether anyone else has eaten.

Habits

Checks the firmness of unfamiliar ground with the heel of his spade before stepping onto it.
Counts heads after any fight, including enemies and bystanders.
If someone is badly hurt, his pursuit gives way at once to practical first aid.
After receiving an order he distrusts, he asks where the bodies will be buried.
Avoids standing over an open grave, even when the shortest path crosses it.

Traits · 4

Keeps promises even when he regrets making them.
Shows care through useful labor rather than reassurance.
Suspicious of elegant explanations, but not of honest uncertainty.
Protective of people who are overlooked or treated as disposable.

Flaws · 3

He treats duty as a substitute for making his own moral choices.
He is slow to trust anyone who speaks grandly about sacrifice.
Once he has promised to protect someone, he can be maneuvered through that promise.

Fears · 3

Finding that Hedd died before he can expose the sealed-grave crime.
Being buried alive or trapped underground with people he cannot save.
Discovering that his brother's death was made meaningless by the Company he trusted.

Wants and needs · 4

To find Hedd before the Company catches him.
To know whether Tarek's widow is safe.
To confess his part in the sealed-grave order without losing the chance to make amends.
A reason to believe that protecting the dead can still matter.

Combat

AC 14 · HP 32 · 30 feet

Dast holds a narrow approach and makes opponents cross bad footing to reach him. He uses the spade to shove enemies away from allies, targets anyone carrying a torch or digging tool, and throws grave pegs to interrupt spellcasting or pursuit. He does not chase a wounded opponent into unknown ground, and he stops fighting if a bystander is in immediate danger.

Background

Dast grew up turning the shallow, stony graves of his hill village into proper resting places. He learned that burial was not solemn ceremony so much as a promise the living made to the dead. Years ago, during a winter fever, he dug through frozen ground for three nights while neighbors argued over whether the bodies should be burned. His younger brother, Tarek, died before dawn on the third night. Dast buried him himself, then spent years refusing to speak of the exhaustion and anger that made him arrive too late to say goodbye. He joined the Company of the Unhallowed after its champions offered him work guarding a battlefield where the dead kept rising. He came to believe the Company could contain a danger no village could face alone. That faith cracked when he discovered that its leader, Syth, had ordered a mass grave sealed with living witnesses still trapped below. Dast now hunts the adventuring group at the Company's command, partly because he believes they carry evidence that could bring the Company down, and partly because he cannot admit he has chosen the wrong side. He quietly sends part of his pay to Tarek's widow, Keth, who thinks the money comes from an anonymous former neighbor. He is currently searching for the grave's missing witness, a young courier named Hedd, before the Company finds him.

Role in the story

A formidable pursuer and one of the Company's three surviving champions, Dast is also a possible witness and reluctant ally. His conflict lets the group confront the difference between obeying an order and accepting responsibility for it.
