Neska Vezhkrin
Caravan Broker
Neska Vezhkrin
Species
Xzalta
Appearance
A tall, broad-shouldered Xzalta woman whose presence seems to arrive a moment before she does. She pauses at every doorway, inhales through her nose as if tasting the room, then ducks under the lintel with deliberate care. Her charcoal skin has a muted violet cast in shadow and a warm plum sheen beneath sunlight. Her hands are enormous, with blunt, square nails stained permanently brown from tannins, ink, and spice. She moves with surprising quiet for someone so heavily built, placing each foot as though the floor might be asleep. Her face is stern at rest, but when she smiles, it is sudden and almost girlish, creating a startling contradiction between her intimidating frame and her eager, open expression. She smells faintly of cedar shavings, pepper, and rain-soaked wool.
“Measured and exact, with a low rasp at the beginning of most sentences. She often inhales audibly, pauses, and then speaks as though presenting a conclusion reached long ago.”

Distinguishing Features
Her first response to a new room is a deliberate inhalation and a soft click of the tongue.
She carries a tiny brass abacus and moves one bead whenever someone makes a promise.
Her laughter begins as a silent shaking of the shoulders before becoming a low, bubbling chuckle.
She has a strip of lavender cloth sewn inside one sleeve, the only part of her mother's caravan banner she still owns.
She unconsciously lowers her voice around sleeping animals and raises it around officials.
Voice
“A low, grainy contralto with a careful rhythm. Her words are soft enough that listeners lean toward her, then unexpectedly forceful when she names a dead person or challenges an official.”
Clothing
A sleeveless wine-red wool coat reinforced with narrow leather ribs, a smoke-gray wrap shirt, wide charcoal trousers, and soft-soled traveling boots. Her belt carries brass tokens stamped with old caravan routes rather than coins. A faded lavender sash is tied around her waist, carefully mended in three different thread colors.
Body Language
Neska occupies more space than she realizes, often bracing one hand on a table while speaking. When suspicious, she tilts her head and presses her tongue against one cheek. When moved by kindness, she looks down at her own hands and rubs a thumb over the nearest knuckle.
