Etemi Kallun
Etemi Kallun
At the table
Voice
A dry, carrying voice with a faint rasp from dust and years of calling across stalls. His breath catches slightly after long sentences, but he compensates by making each phrase precise. When amused, a sharp clicking laugh breaks through his deliberate cadence.
His speech is shaped by years of calling prices over cart wheels and wind: crisp consonants, quickly placed numbers, and a habit of repeating the most important term as if making sure it survives the noise. He tells stories with small shifts in rhythm but avoids grand flourishes when speaking about himself.
Speech patterns
How to play them
Begins with a modest offer and a practical question to learn what the other person values. He is warm with children and ordinary travelers, guarded with officials, and directly helpful when someone needs medicine or safe passage. If threatened, he offers a bargain that buys time while he looks for an exit.
Goal
Secure a fitted leg brace for Peli, clear the debt attached to Daro's old caravan, and reopen their partnership without pretending the argument never happened.
Motivation
He wants to make commerce a way of keeping people alive, but he also wants proof that his old choices can still be repaired.
Appearance
Etemi has weather-darkened umber skin with a dry, fine-grained texture at the temples and a polished sheen across the bridge of his nose from years under open sun. He moves with a merchant's measured economy, always turning his shoulders as if making room for a loaded pack that is no longer there. His smile arrives quickly, but his eyes stay attentive, weighing exits and expressions. A brass measuring caliper hangs from his belt; one jaw is rubbed smooth and bright from years of his thumb worrying it. Unexpectedly for a hard-traveling trader, he keeps a tiny folded paper theater tucked in his coat and repairs its painted figures with meticulous patience.
Clothing
A sand-colored coat with deep inner pockets, patched at the elbows in dark green thread; a red-brown sash holds his purse and caliper. His boots are thick-soled and dust-caked, and a broad-brimmed hat has been repaired with neat, mismatched strips of leather.
Body language
He stands at a slight angle to whoever he speaks with, keeping one shoulder toward the nearest exit. His hands describe the dimensions of imagined cargo while he negotiates. When unsettled, his thumb rubs the smooth end of his caliper, but he keeps his gaze level.

12 traits and drivesEtemi is generous with necessities but exacting about promises, and he hates being mistaken for a soft touch while quietly making exceptions for people in trouble. He can read a room well, yet resists letting anyone read him.

Background
Etemi grew up carrying bundles between roadside stalls at the long bend locals now call Bent Ford, a name left over from a survey map that marked the crossing as Bend Four. His mother, Nali, taught him that a fair bargain should leave both sides able to return tomorrow. His father, Omri, taught him that a bargain is only safe when you know who is listening. At nineteen, Etemi bought a damaged cart from a stranded caravan master and rebuilt it into a traveling shop, taking on a partner, the blunt and methodical Daro. Years later, a flood trapped their caravan on the ford's high bank. Etemi chose to save a chest of medicine over a crate of dyes, but the delay meant his younger sister, Peli, lost the use of one leg to a fever that the medicine arrived too late to stop. That decision made him better at weighing goods and worse at weighing himself. He now trades in tools, travel provisions, and hard-to-find remedies, while quietly arranging a proper leg brace for Peli and negotiating with a tax collector whose records claim his late partner's debts are still his. Daro left the business after their last argument, but still sends Etemi customers and advice through coded notes.
Role in the story
A recurring traveling supplier, negotiation broker, and source of grounded local complications. He can provide practical help, but his debt dispute and family obligations may pull the party into a tense choice between protecting a shipment and confronting an unfair tax claim.
