Mairwen
At the table
Voice
Spice sounds as though she has spent years speaking above clattering dishes, street carts, and late-night conversation: warm, slightly grainy, and easy to hear without being loud. Her breath is steady until she is startled, when she catches it briefly and begins enunciating each word with crisp care.
Her voice has a lightly rasped edge from smoke-filled rooms and years of talking over music and traffic. She speaks at an even, practical pace, with the occasional clipped phrase when impatient. When rattled, she takes a breath through her nose, and the next sentence comes out unusually precise, as if she were reading terms from a contract.
Speech patterns
How to play them
Begin with a practical offer or a frank question instead of charm for its own sake. Spice is generous with information when people are candid, but she tests whether promises are being used to create leverage. Respect her history and she will become a dependable ally; treat it as a weakness and she will end the conversation.
Goal
Find what lies beneath the river district before the fey seed reaches it, and learn whether it can be removed without breaking her pact.
Motivation
Spice wants to protect the people who gave her a home without allowing anyone, mortal or fey, to turn that protection into a claim on her.
Appearance
Spice has tan skin with a warm, sun-browned cast and long auburn hair that falls in thick, slightly unruly waves to her waist. Small goatlike horns curl close to her temples, ridged like old wood and polished at their tips from absent-minded rubbing. Her golden eyes make her friendly smile seem brighter than the rooms she usually works in. She moves with the economical balance of someone used to narrow stairs and crowded rooms, but plants her feet firmly when she means to stay. Unexpectedly, she keeps a tiny collection of pressed leaves tucked in her book, each one labeled in neat, careful script.
Clothing
A russet wool coat over a cream blouse and dark green trousers, practical boots, and a scarf pinned with a plain brass clasp. Her clothes are well cared for but visibly mended at the elbows.
Body language
She offers an open palm before she offers a handshake, as if giving someone time to refuse. When worried, she rubs one horn with her thumb and presses her lips together; when angry, she squares her shoulders and looks directly at the person who caused it.

Background
Spice grew up in the river district, where her mother ran a cramped washhouse and taught her to read by tracing letters in soap foam. When the washhouse burned, Spice was sixteen and had nowhere safe to go. She spent years working at the Lantern Rooms, a respectable house of pleasure whose proprietor, Deka, insisted on rules that protected the workers. Spice learned to read people quickly, to make a room feel safe, and to keep a spare key hidden where no searcher would think to look. During a winter fever, she sat with a dying client who had no kin. He asked her to promise that his daughter would not be sold into debt. Spice could not keep that promise alone, so she bargained with a voice in the hearth ashes. Grandmother Briar gave her power to break the girl’s contract, and Spice paid with a promise to carry one seed from the fey realm wherever she went. She left the Lantern Rooms soon after, but remains close to Deka and still sends money to the house. Now the seed has begun sprouting in her locked room, and its roots are pushing through the floor toward something buried beneath the district.
