At the table

Voice

Her voice has a lightly rough edge from years near smoke and hot ovens, with a brisk rhythm shaped by calling orders across a busy room. It sounds welcoming without being sugary, and turns firm when she is protecting someone.

She speaks in a quick, practical cadence, with the clipped precision of someone used to timing ovens and calling over clattering trays. Her vowels carry the local Barovian weight, and she folds recipes, weather, and food into her metaphors. When she is tired, she loses the ends of sentences to a breathy rasp from smoke-filled shifts.

Speech patterns

Uses baking terms to make a point: 'That story needs another minute in the oven.'
Offers practical questions before emotional comfort, such as whether someone has eaten or warmed their hands.
When angry, speaks in brisk, clipped instructions and slaps flour from her palms between sentences.
Calls familiar customers by the bread they usually buy rather than by name.

How to play them

Tella offers warmth and food before asking questions, but watches for signs that a visitor might bring trouble to the neighborhood. Treat her as a grounded local with useful knowledge, not as a quest-giver who knows every secret in Vallaki. Earn her trust by respecting her customers and paying fairly, or by helping her protect someone vulnerable.

Goal

Keep the bakehouse open through the coming winter and make sure no child in her neighborhood goes hungry.

Motivation

She believes a shared meal can briefly make frightened people act like neighbors again.

Appearance

The Blue Apron Baker is a young human woman whose flour-dusted face glows in the oven’s amber light. Her skin is pale and smooth, but the backs of her hands are reddened and dry from hot trays, lye soap, and winter work. Long brown hair is pinned up with two wooden skewers, with loose wisps pasted to her temples by sweat. She moves with quick, economical turns, always balancing a tray on one hip. Her unexpected detail: she keeps a tiny, polished brass bell tied to her apron, and rings it softly before opening every oven, as if greeting something inside. The bakery smells of warm crust and woodsmoke, while its windows sweat against the chill.

Clothing

A faded blue apron over a russet dress, sleeves rolled to the elbow, thick wool stockings, and practical boots crusted with flour at the seams. A brass bell is tied to the apron with a careful knot.

Body language

She leans toward people while listening, hands busy with dough or cloth. When she distrusts someone, she turns her shoulder toward the oven and keeps a rolling pin within easy reach. Her fingers drum a quick two-beat pattern against the counter when she is holding back an argument.

Personality

12 traits and drives

Tella is generous but not soft-headed: she will feed a stranger, then ask pointedly why they arrived after dark. In a calm mood she jokes and fusses over small comforts; under pressure she becomes commanding and impatient. She wants people to feel welcome, yet hates being treated as helpless.

Habits

When the shop is busy, she counts loaves under her breath and taps each tray twice before loading it.

After closing, she leaves one heel of bread on the sill for whoever is cold or hungry outside.
She checks the oven bell’s knot before sleeping, though she insists it is only a habit.

Combat

AC 12 · HP 22 · 30 ft.

Tella is not a trained warrior. She tries to get customers and children behind the counter, uses flour to break line of sight, and strikes only to create an opening to escape. She will defend the bakehouse if someone threatens the people sheltering inside.

Oven-Hardened. Tella can work through heat and smoke with practiced focus. This is a narrative trait, not resistance to fire damage.

Custom feature, Bread for the Road. Tella can prepare enough dense, nourishing rolls for six people during a short rest if she has flour, water, and a heat source.

Flour Veil. Tella scatters flour in a 5-foot-radius space she can see within 10 feet. The area is heavily obscured until the start of her next turn. She can use this action once per short rest.

Background

Tella learned breadmaking from her mother in a cramped Vallaki bakehouse, where flour was measured carefully and every scrap of dough mattered. At seventeen, a night fire swept through the adjoining storehouse. Tella heard a child crying behind a jammed door and dragged the child out through smoke, but the flour sacks and the winter grain were lost. The family survived because neighbors shared their dwindling stores; the experience taught her that food is a promise people make to one another, not merely a trade. Her mother later died during a fever season, leaving Tella the ovens and a debt to the proprietor of the building. Now she bakes for Vallaki’s wary households, gives away yesterday’s loaves when she can, and quietly tries to keep the bakehouse open as the town’s fear grows. She is on speaking terms with the inn’s harried staff, but disagrees with them about whether kindness attracts trouble.

Role in the story

A compassionate Vallaki civilian whose bakehouse can become a refuge, a source of rumors, or a vulnerable place the characters may choose to defend.
