At the table
“I called that defiance. I have not yet established what it was.”
Voice
A clear, forward voice with a faint rasp from cold-weather travel and long hours speaking in stone chambers. She projects from the chest rather than the throat. Her breathing is conspicuously controlled during ordinary conversation, but a sudden dry hitch betrays fear or shame; anger makes her diction sharper and her breath more audible.
Her speech is precise and carefully paced, shaped by years of reciting doctrine and taking testimony. She forms consonants crisply and tends to repeat a key phrase before challenging it. When rattled, breath catches in a dry hitch and the next words come out in clipped bursts. Her voice comes from practiced breath control, long marches in armor, and the habit of making herself heard in echoing stone halls.

How to play them
Amber begins formally, explains why she is asking questions, and gives people time to answer. She responds well to verifiable details, admissions of uncertainty, and evidence that complicates her assumptions. Attempts to intimidate her make her more rigid; a sincere appeal to protect ordinary people can make her abandon protocol. If she discovers that the party has lied, she asks why before deciding what to do.
Goal
Find and prove the truth behind the new case connected to the official who escaped accountability after the Ashen Grain inquiry, without allowing the Collegium to bury the evidence again.
Motivation
To make the Church's teaching about civic duty and mercy apply to the powerful as firmly as it applies to everyone else.
Appearance
Amber is tall, long-limbed, and rigidly upright, with auburn hair usually bound in a low, severe braid and grey eyes that hold a person as steadily as a plumb line. Her breastplate is polished at the center and dulled at the edges from years of travel; its gold emblem shows a spear wrapped by three cords. She moves with careful, economical steps, placing her feet as if every floor might be evidence. In a crowded room she takes up more space than she seems to realize, shoulders squared and chin lifted. An unexpected softness: she carries a tiny, carefully folded paper windmill tucked into her belt, and makes new ones from scraps when waiting.
Clothing
A fitted breastplate bearing the Brasterdenese inquisition's gold emblem, a spear wrapped by three cords, over a dark travel tunic. She wears a weatherproof cloak, sturdy boots, and a plain wool scarf that she uses to wrap fragile documents.
Body language
She stands square to whoever is speaking, often leaning forward as if the conversation is a formal examination. She takes up space without noticing and plants her feet widely when challenged. When compassion wins out over suspicion, her shoulders drop and she turns slightly sideways to seem less imposing.

Personality
13 traits and drivesAmber's discipline makes her look immovable, but it is partly a brace against doubt. She wants to believe that clear rules protect the vulnerable, yet she is most compassionate when she stops applying them mechanically. In calm company she is unexpectedly patient and even dryly funny. Under pressure she becomes procedural and demanding; when shame or grief breaks through, she stops questioning people and asks what they need.
- Alignment
- Lawful neutral, though she is trying to make her sense of justice larger than her obedience.

Combat
AC 14 · HP 22 · 30 ft.Amber holds a narrow approach and uses her reach of judgment rather than speed: she marks the most dangerous foe, stays between enemies and vulnerable allies, and uses two rapier attacks when she can maintain her footing. She reserves spell slots for Divine Smite against fiends, undead, or a proven immediate threat. Her poor Constitution makes prolonged combat dangerous, so she retreats behind sturdier allies when badly hurt. She would rather capture a suspect than kill one.

Background
Amber was raised in a Newces parish where civic service was treated as a form of prayer. As a young acolyte she could recite the church's account of the First Breath and the Gathering Flame, and she learned to explain Breath as Mercy and Flame as Law. She became a paladin and inquisitor under Cormac Faoláin, master inquisitor of the Divine Collegium. He taught her to compare testimony against evidence rather than mistake confidence for truth. Her certainty cracked during the Ashen Grain inquiry, a famine investigation named for the one burned granary outsiders insist was a deliberate attack. Amber helped condemn a miller as a heretic and saboteur. Later, she found proof that the fire had been started by a church official concealing the diversion of food. Cormac urged her to report the evidence through proper channels; the official was quietly transferred, while the miller died in custody. Amber has never forgiven herself for treating procedure as proof of justice. Now she travels as an inquisitor, tasked with investigating religious dissent and threats to the Divine Kingdom. She still believes the Accord can bind diverse peoples into a just society, but she has begun asking whether a doctrine's interpretation serves the people or merely protects its interpreters. Cormac remains her teacher and correspondent, though their letters have grown guarded. A former parish healer, Dagnas Kett, has sent word that the same official is involved in a new case. Amber intends to uncover the truth before the Collegium can close it.
Role in the story
A formidable investigator and potential ally whose pursuit of heretics can become a pursuit of institutional truth. The party may help her expose a corrupt official, persuade her to protect a dissenter, or confront the harm she caused in the past.
