Hadrun
Hadrun
At the table
Voice
A chest-resonant, dry-edged voice shaped by years of shouting over quarry drills and speaking through dust. Its low vibration is strongest on hard consonants; a faint rasp catches after long spellcasting. He does not soften when angry. He becomes more emphatic, striking each word as if setting a stone into place.
His words have the blunt cadence of a quarry foreman: carefully placed, hard to mishear, with technical metaphors drawn from stonework and flood control. He articulates consonants with his broad jaw and sometimes clicks his teeth before correcting a detail. When discussing ordinary people, his language is unexpectedly concrete, full of names, jobs, and exact places.
Speech patterns
How to play them
Offer a practical bargain first, especially one that protects civilians or preserves useful infrastructure. He respects resolve and preparation, but interprets vague compassion as weakness. If confronted with a specific person harmed by his decisions, he listens longer than expected, though he will not easily admit fault.
Goal
Unify the fractured provinces under a single authority before another war or natural disaster can consume them, even if he must become the monster that forces them to cooperate.
Motivation
He wants to make catastrophe impossible by placing every dangerous decision in the hands of one person he believes can bear the cost. He also wants, though he cannot say it aloud, to prove his mentor did not die for a fool.
Appearance
Hadrun looks like a man who has learned to make a room rearrange itself around him. He stands with his feet planted wide, shoulders square, and a stillness that makes other people step aside before they realize they have done it. His broad jaw ends in a slight underbite; when he eats, he tears bread with his front teeth in blunt, tidy bites, and when he laughs, the lower teeth show first. His transformation is more furnace than lizard: dark, overlapping scales push through his skin, his jaw lengthens into a plated muzzle, and four swept-back horns frame a crown of ember-bright vents. In that shape, his breath makes the air ripple and his footsteps leave brief, glassy prints in dust. The unexpected detail is that he carries a tiny, carefully folded paper puppet in his sleeve, a keepsake from the children's playhouse he once helped build.
Clothing
A high-collared charcoal coat with bronze fastenings, reinforced seams, and a heat-scorched lining; beneath it, a plain linen shirt and a thick belt holding chalk, spell components, and a folding map case
Body language
He claims space without seeming to notice, leaning over maps and turning his shoulders to block the easiest path past him. In ordinary conversation he taps one thick fingernail against his lower teeth while considering a reply. When he is ashamed, he folds his arms tightly and angles his body away, but keeps his feet pointed toward the person he has hurt.

Personality
13 traits and drivesHadrun is protective in the way a builder protects a bridge: he studies its weaknesses, reinforces it, and resents anyone who tampers with the design. Around workers and children he is patient, even gently funny; among rulers he is blunt, expansive, and quick to turn a discussion into an ultimatum. He values individual courage but distrusts individual judgment, and his affection often arrives disguised as orders.

Background
Hadrun was born in the quarry town of Kilnwatch, where his mother, Katalin, measured stone for the old imperial road and his father repaired floodgates. He was clever enough to win a place at the Royal Arcanum, but never comfortable among its polished heirs. During his third year, a volcanic tremor cracked the warded cistern beneath the school. Hadrun held the failing seal while his mentor, Professor Goro, led the other students out; the resulting surge burned the mentor's body and left Hadrun with an elemental presence lodged in his blood. He spent years trying to reproduce the event as a controlled transformation, telling himself that power could prevent another disaster. His first successful change came during a mining collapse, when he carried trapped workers out in a dragon-shaped body and then watched the town's council seize the rescued mine for military use. He came to believe that mercy without control only feeds the powerful. Now he intends to force the neighboring provinces into a single regime, using elemental devastation as a warning rather than a first strike. His former friend, Katalin's apprentice Kento, tracks his movements and tries to keep civilians clear of his campaigns. Hadrun secretly sends money to the playhouse in Kilnwatch, which is run by the retired actor Tadeo and still stages the little puppet plays Hadrun wrote as a child.
Role in the story
A campaign-scale antagonist whose desire to prevent suffering is entangled with authoritarian control and a buried act of cowardice. The party can defeat him in combat, expose the truth behind his rise, or force him to confront the difference between protecting people and ruling them.
“He was clever enough to win a place at the Royal Arcanum, but never comfortable among its polished heirs.”
- Faction
- Formerly the Royal Arcanum; now commander of a private elementalist force known as the 7th Survey, a name retained from the army map that first marked his intended territory
