Arven Moru
Arven Moru
At the table
“The fire did not choose. Someone failed to account for it.”
Voice
A dry, slightly grainy voice shaped by furnace noise and years of instruction. He places weight on nouns and numbers, not volume. His name, Arven Moru, is soft and rounded, though he pronounces it with the same careful precision he gives every measurement.
His voice has the dry rasp of someone who spent years speaking over furnace roar, with precise consonants learned from teaching apprentices to follow measurements. He speaks in compact declarative sentences, pausing to choose the exact technical word. When recounting a failure, his phrasing turns clipped and procedural, as if a report can keep grief from becoming a confession.
Speech patterns
How to play them
He offers useful information and tangible help to people who demonstrate competence. He tries to recruit opponents by showing them the human cost of uncontrolled elemental disasters. He does not bluff about his intentions, but carefully omits the likely cost of his plan. A personal appeal involving Oda or the Sootbridge families can make him pause, though not abandon his objective.
Goal
Bind the elemental vents beneath the region to the buried engine and make every eruption controllable, even if doing so requires placing the surrounding settlements under his rule.
Motivation
He believes personal control is the only reliable answer to elemental catastrophe, and that people will forgive tyranny if it keeps their homes standing.
Appearance
Arven takes up space before he speaks: tall, broad through the shoulders, and so still that people unconsciously leave a clear ring around him. His skin has the dry, fine-grained look of fired clay, with faintly luminous lines beneath it that brighten like banked coals when he casts. He smells strongly of wet stone after lightning, hot iron, and the bitter citrus oil he rubs into his gloves; he knows about the citrus, but not how far the other scents carry. His movements are economical and grounded, until danger comes, when his spine uncoils with reptilian speed. In his hybrid form, overlapping charcoal scales rise across his throat and forearms, his jaw lengthens into a blunt draconic muzzle, and elemental light leaks between his teeth like a furnace seen through a cracked door.
Clothing
A high-collared, smoke-blue coat lined with heat-resistant woven scales, a black linen shirt, fitted gloves treated with citrus oil, and heavy boots with ceramic soles. His belt carries narrow tubes of annotated vellum rather than a pouch of components.
Body language
He stands as if braced against a wind no one else can feel, shoulders square and feet carefully planted. He makes room for no one unless he has decided to trust them. When listening, he angles his head slightly, like a creature locating a sound through earth. His hands are usually clasped behind his back; in anger, they open, fingers spreading as though he is measuring the width of an invisible furnace.

Personality
14 traits and drivesArven is patient with practical questions and merciless with what he considers sentimental delay. He can be unexpectedly generous to workers and children, then dismiss the same people's right to choose their own risks. In private, grief makes him meticulous rather than openly sorrowful; when a plan fails, he becomes blunt and physically restless. He wants to be remembered as a protector, but distrusts anyone who would protect people by a different method.

He maintains a teleportation escape route when possible. If pressured or forced into close combat, he transforms, uses flight to reposition, and targets clustered enemies with Prismatic Exhalation. He avoids killing his sister or former apprentice if they appear, but will incapacitate them without hesitation. He retreats if reduced below 60 hit points and the engine is not immediately threatened.

Background
Arven was raised above a kilnworks in the soot-heavy town of Sootbridge, where his mother, Oda, shaped roof tiles and his father taught sums to apprentices. As a child, he learned to tell the temperature of a furnace by the smell of its smoke. At twenty-six, while studying a buried draconic observatory, he triggered a dormant elemental engine. The resulting eruption killed his mentor and buried an entire neighborhood beneath molten glass. Arven survived by drawing the engine's power into himself. The experience changed his understanding of magic: he began to see natural disasters as failures of design, not forces to be endured. He now intends to bind the region's elemental vents into a single controllable system, convinced that his rule will prevent another catastrophe. His sister Oda still runs the family kiln and publicly denounces him, though she secretly sends him old family recipes and asks him to leave the town's waterworks untouched. His former apprentice, Beren, has stolen a set of engine schematics and is trying to warn the towns around the vents. Arven has not ordered Beren's capture, but his agents are closing in. Meanwhile, the engine under Sootbridge is waking faster than his calculations predicted.
Role in the story
A central antagonist whose argument is understandable and whose methods are increasingly monstrous. He can be confronted as a tyrant, negotiated with as a desperate engineer, or exposed as the person whose original choice caused the disaster he now claims to prevent.
“As a child, he learned to tell the temperature of a furnace by the smell of its smoke.”
- Faction
- He commands a small cadre of engineers and elemental researchers called the Ventwrights, named for the trade that first built Sootbridge's kilns. Their loyalty is practical rather than devotional.
