At the table

Voice

A low, rough-edged voice that seems to push warm air ahead of each phrase. His breathing is an audible, steady furnace-draw when composed; when rattled, it breaks into a dry rasp that gives away his alarm before his face does.

His speech has the measured cadence of a commander accustomed to being heard over battle. He forms consonants with a dry, furnace rasp, and the ends of his words carry a faint hiss like sparks skittering across stone. His breath is usually steady; when the sanctuary is threatened, it catches and scrapes audibly before the flames around him surge.

Speech patterns

Uses short, concrete sentences when issuing commands.
Names the cost of a choice before discussing its benefit.
Asks questions that sound like orders, then waits for a real answer.
Uses the phrase "Show me what you will keep" when testing a bargain.

How to play them

Geshith offers terms plainly and expects the other party to understand their weight. He respects courage that has a purpose, especially when it includes the willingness to disagree with him. He may trade safe passage, military restraint, or access to Sahraya for useful information. Threats against the sanctuary turn negotiation into immediate hostility.

Goal

Discover the truth behind the sealed sanctuary and the mark left by his absent parent without losing the loyalty of his war host.

Motivation

To prove that rule can mean more than destruction, while uncovering the inheritance his family left beneath Sahraya.

Appearance

Geshith fills a room before he speaks. More than twice a human's height, he carries a dense, squared-off strength beneath deep crimson skin, where heat ripples the air and tiny flames crawl over his shoulders. Two black horns sweep back from his brow above a leonine face; yellow-white eyes shine through the restless fire that frames his head. His enormous wings fold behind him like a scorched cloak, their dark red membranes stretched over black spines. He walks with deliberate, economical steps, as though the floor has already agreed to bear his weight. One unexpected detail: he tends a small, soot-black clay pot of pale, salt-loving flowers on a ledge in his audience hall, watering them with melted snow.

Clothing

A blackened harness of overlapping plates and heavy chains, fitted around his wings rather than concealing them; a mantle of scorched hide hangs from his shoulders.

Body language

He knows exactly how much space he takes and uses it as a deliberate tool. In negotiation he keeps his wings folded and stands still, leaving others to decide whether to approach. When angered, he sets his feet wide, lowers his head, and opens his wings until the room seems to shrink around everyone else.

Distinguishing features

Two enormous swept-back black horns and a mane of living flame.
Huge, dark red bat-like wings with smouldering edges.
A perpetual halo of heat shimmer that makes straight lines waver around him.
A black-bladed sword glowing along its edge and a whip that coils as if listening.

Personality

12 traits and drives

He is patient enough to let a challenger finish speaking and proud enough to remember every insult. Around subordinates he is controlled and exacting; alone with the sanctuary flowers, he handles each stem with surprising care. When startled or genuinely afraid, the discipline slips: his breath rasps, his flames flare, and he moves before he has finished thinking.

Alignment
Lawful evil

Quirks

Counts doorways under his breath whenever he enters an unfamiliar hall.
Taps the whip handle twice against his palm before making a promise.
Tilts his head to listen to flames as if they have said something important.
Watering the sanctuary flowers, he uses melted snow rather than water from Sahraya.

Habits

Lets his whip trail across stone when he wants a gathering to settle.
Counts the exits and the living before taking his place at a table.
When rattled, his breath catches with a dry, furnace-like rasp and the flames at his shoulders flare unevenly.
Gives a direct answer to a difficult question, then asks what the questioner intends to do with it.
Tends his flowers himself after a battle, no matter who is waiting to see him.

Traits · 3

Values deliberate courage, yet distrusts anyone who seems eager to prove it.
Can show unexpected mercy, but insists that mercy be understood as a choice, not a weakness.
Keeps his promises precisely, even when doing so costs him.

Flaws · 3

Treats loyalty as a debt that must eventually be repaid.
Finds it difficult to trust anyone who has not defied him at least once.
His attachment to the sanctuary can override sound military judgment.

Fears · 3

That the sanctuary will be destroyed before he can learn why its mark is tied to his family.
That his captains will mistake restraint for weakness and turn on one another.
That he has kept the sanctuary safe for reasons that are selfish rather than just.

Wants and needs · 3

Wants the sanctuary kept intact until he can uncover its history.
Needs his captains to understand that restraint is part of his rule, not a retreat from it.
Wants an answer about the parent whose mark lies beneath Sahraya.

Combat

AC 19 · HP 262 · 40 ft., fly 80 ft.

Geshith opens with his fire aura and uses his whip to isolate a dangerous foe or drag a ranged attacker into reach. He follows with Cinderblade strikes, reserving Cinder Crown for clustered enemies or a moment when he needs to break a defensive line. He uses Ashen Step to escape confinement, reposition beside a threatened ally, or deny enemies a safe distance. He fights with calculated pressure, but if an enemy threatens the sanctuary he abandons restraint and pursues them relentlessly.

Background

Geshith rose from a rank-and-file war host by learning that terror spends quickly while dependable judgment can hold a conquered place for generations. He took command of a fractured force in Sahraya after its previous leader ordered a retreat that left a cohort trapped beneath a collapsing basalt bridge. Geshith disobeyed, returned through the fire, and dragged survivors out one by one. The rescued captain, Tekk, became his most trusted military adviser, though Tekk still challenges his decisions in private. Geshith now rules through controlled displays of force and a strict bargain: obedience earns protection, and betrayal is answered publicly. His commanders have begun to suspect that he is preserving an ancient sanctuary beneath the city rather than razing it, a choice that has strained his authority and drawn the attention of rivals. The sanctuary's sealed doors bear a mark he recognizes from the final order given by the parent who abandoned him.

Role in the story

A formidable ruler who can be an enemy, uneasy ally, or dangerous patron. His authority and the mystery beneath Sahraya make him central to any conflict involving the war host or the sanctuary.
