Lestlan
Lestlan
At the table
Voice
A dry, gravelly voice with a salt-rough edge, supported by a broad chest accustomed to calling across a pitching deck. Before speaking he draws a raspy breath through his nose. He projects orders cleanly without shouting himself hoarse, and his laugh comes out as a short bark that often surprises people who expect none.
His speech is clipped and practical, shaped by years of giving instructions over wind, rigging, and surf. He favors concrete words and gives warnings in exact terms. He uses nautical comparisons sparingly, usually when trying to soften a truth without pretending it is harmless.
Speech patterns
How to play them
He starts by listening and checking whether a visitor understands the ship's risks. Practical competence earns his respect faster than flattery. He is blunt with threats and patient with frightened people, especially young ones. If shown credible evidence about the route leak, he will investigate quietly and protect the crew from a public accusation until he knows who is responsible.
Goal
Find proof of the route leak without turning the crew against itself, then convince his nephew that a life at sea must be chosen with open eyes.
Motivation
Keep the crew alive without becoming the sort of officer who treats people as expendable cargo.
Appearance
Lestlan occupies a doorway as if the ship built it around him: broad shoulders angled to leave a narrow passage, though he is not always aware he has blocked it. His skin is weather-darkened and pebbled with salt-dry patches; his beard is braided into three thick cords, each tied with a different bit of sail thread. He moves with the careful, rolling economy of someone who has spent decades bracing against decks that shift beneath him. Before he speaks, he takes a long, rough breath through his nose, as though tasting the air for weather. Unexpectedly, he keeps a tiny, immaculate paper theater folded in his coat and sometimes sets it up for children during quiet watches.
Clothing
A salt-stiff blue coat patched at the elbows, a red sash faded almost brown, tar-dark sea boots, and a battered tricorn hat whose brim has been reshaped by years of rain. He wears a plain belt with a knife sheath and a brass whistle.
Body language
He plants his feet wide even on dry land and unconsciously leans into the wind, whether there is any or not. In a crowd he makes room by turning his shoulders sideways, but rarely realizes he has made everyone else shift first. When he distrusts someone, his thumb rubs the braided beard ties one by one.

Combat
AC 17 · HP 60 · 30 ft.Lestlan holds a narrow passage or the safest route to an exit, forcing enemies to approach on his terms. He uses Menacing Attack to disrupt a dangerous foe, saves Precision Attack for a crucial strike, and keeps his reaction available to punish an enemy who overextends. He will spend Action Surge to end a threat quickly if a crewmate is cornered. He prefers capture or surrender when practical, but does not hesitate if the ship is in danger.

Background
Lestlan was raised hauling nets from a stony inlet where his family measured time by tides, not bells. He signed aboard Captain Turtosa's ship as a young deckhand after a flood took the inlet's fish sheds and left his family owing more than they could repay. Years later, during a night squall, he ordered the crew to cut a fouled line rather than risk the whole vessel. The line held a trapped sailor from another ship. Lestlan saved his own crew, but the sailor drowned, and the choice changed the way he gives orders: now he names the danger plainly and makes sure someone else has heard him. He has served as Captain Turtosa's first mate long enough to know the captain's silences as well as his commands. He writes to his widowed sister, Nera, and sends most of his pay to her son, who wants to go to sea despite Lestlan's objections. Their letters have grown tense. At present, Lestlan suspects a trusted quartermaster has been selling the ship's route information, but he has found no proof and will not accuse a crewmate on instinct alone.
Role in the story
A hard-edged shipboard authority who can become a trustworthy ally, a moral obstacle, or the first person to recognize that someone is endangering Captain Turtosa's crew. His suspicion of the route leak gives the party a problem to investigate, while his hidden guilt offers a personal conflict that can surface when the crew faces a similar sacrifice.
“Years later, during a night squall, he ordered the crew to cut a fouled line rather than risk the whole vessel.”
- Faction
- Captain Turtosa's crew; he has no formal loyalty to a navy or trading house.
