Mieszko
Mieszko
At the table
Voice
Mieszko's voice has a dry, forward rasp, like someone accustomed to speaking over wind and the clatter of tools. Its unfamiliar depth still surprises him. He projects clearly when giving instructions, then catches himself when a sound in his throat turns sharp. Anger makes his words faster and more exact, not softer; pain makes him stop mid-sentence and swallow before continuing.
His Polish speech rhythms shape his Common: consonants land firmly, vowels stay clear, and he occasionally pauses to choose a word rather than surrender precision. He speaks in short, well-ordered clauses when planning work, but personal subjects tangle his phrasing. After exertion, the last words of a sentence may catch painfully in his throat.

How to play them
Approach Mieszko through a practical problem: ask him to assess a crossing, plan a route, or help organize supplies. Give him time to adjust to personal questions, and do not treat his gender or changing body as a puzzle for others to solve. Trust grows when people respect his expertise and share the work.
Goal
Find a defensible place for the Seven Cold Voices, establish a reliable route to it, and learn what is happening to his body before the changes put anyone at risk.
Motivation
To make a survivable home out of unfamiliar country without letting fear, pride, or his changing body divide the people who survived with him.
Appearance
Mieszko has a striking, youthful beauty that might have been lifted from a Polish heroic ballad: clean, balanced features, a straight nose, and an intent gaze that makes his composure seem older than his face. His dark hair falls in unruly waves, usually caught back with a strip of twine. His skin is weathered by wind and road grit, and the tendons in his neck stand out when he swallows. He moves with a surveyor's economy, looking at bridges, slopes, and doorways before he looks at the people using them. His patched coat hangs slightly wrong across his newly changed frame, while his battered measuring rule is cared for so obsessively that its brass edges shine despite the mud.
Clothing
A road-stained wool coat with careful, mismatched repairs at the elbows and a poor fit through the shoulders; a soft linen shirt open at the throat when the heat becomes uncomfortable; sturdy trousers, wrapped calves, and practical boots. He keeps his measuring rule in a fitted inner pocket and cleans that pocket more often than the rest of his clothes.
Body language
He stands as if measuring the space around him, feet set for stable ground and eyes repeatedly tracking slopes, rooflines, and exits. When unsettled by his changed body, he presses his tongue carefully against his teeth and rubs the base of his throat. His pride shows in a lifted chin; his private fear shows in the momentary pause before he speaks.

AC 11 · HP 9 · 30 ft.Mieszko avoids a fair fight. He uses cover, narrow passages, and the terrain to keep danger away from the Seven Cold Voices, striking only when he can make space for someone to escape. He is not a trained soldier, and his current draconic symptoms are painful and unreliable rather than weapons.

Background
Before the displacement, Mieszko was a civil engineer and one of the women in a tight-knit survival circle known as the Seven Cold Voices. She spent years assessing roads, retaining walls, and flood channels, and learned to calm frightened people by giving them a task with a clear beginning and end. During a night of violent weather, the circle was displaced into a land outsiders call wild and pagan. Mieszko woke in a changed body, now understanding himself as a man, with unfamiliar strength, a roughened voice, and a face that draws attention he does not know how to manage. The other displaced members remain his closest ties, but the group's old habits have not kept pace with their new circumstances. He has begun to feel heat deep in his chest and sharp, painful sensitivity around his teeth and throat. The locals' stories of Smok Wawelski make the signs harder to dismiss. Mieszko is trying to find a safe route for the circle, repair a broken crossing near their camp, and decide whether the strange land is a prison, a home, or both.
Role in the story
A capable displaced survivor who can turn a dangerous landscape into a series of solvable problems, while facing a personal transformation that cannot yet be reduced to measurements.
