The Scald
The Scald
At the table
Voice
Its voice seems to rise through the stone before reaching the air, a low, grinding rumble threaded with the hiss of escaping steam. The sound catches in its chest and jaw, making each word feel as if it has been pushed through hot rock.
The Scald speaks in deliberate, blunt phrases, using physical terms such as pressure, mouth, breath, and stone. Its questions are tests of judgment rather than riddles. It does not flatter, and it seldom repeats a warning.
Speech patterns
How to play them
At the Quiet Mile, The Scald begins with questions and a measured display of power rather than an immediate attack. It asks what the party has touched, what they intend to change, and whether they understand who depends on the vents. Evidence of care, clear purpose, and a willingness to accept risk can earn a parley. Threats to the chimney, reckless lies, or weapons drawn without warning turn the meeting into a trial by force.
Goal
Keep the primary chimney open and its ancient thermal flow stable while discovering what has begun to alter the pressure beneath the fields.
Motivation
The Scald's first loyalty is to the living flow of the chimney, not to any settlement or faction. It protects the vent because its breath sustains lives above, and because it believes that an interrupted flow may wake something worse below.
Appearance
A huge, serpentine dragon uncoils from the chimney's mineral haze, its fused scales layered like black glass roof tiles, each edge rimmed in dull orange light. Slag crusts its jaw and shoulders, and vapor beads along its muzzle before hissing away. The Scald moves with slow, immense precision, then snaps forward so quickly the boiling water slaps the shore a heartbeat later. It occupies space as if the whole vent were an extension of its body. Unexpectedly, it keeps a tiny driftwood whistle lodged between two blunt teeth, carefully shielding it from the heat.
Clothing
No clothing. Mineral crust and fused volcanic glass form a natural mantle over its shoulders and jaw.
Body language
Its head remains nearly still while the long body makes small, wave-like adjustments beneath the surface. During a parley, one foreclaw rests beside the vent rather than raised to strike. When its patience breaks, the jaw opens first, releasing a gust of hot mineral breath, and the surrounding water begins to churn.

Personality
13 traits and drivesThe Scald is patient enough to let an unwelcome visitor finish speaking, yet its patience has the hard limits of a vent under pressure. It is curious about the small choices people make and dismissive of grand promises. In a calm exchange it offers blunt, almost practical counsel; when the chimney is threatened, its protective instinct crowds out curiosity and it becomes terrifyingly direct.

AC 18 · HP 287 · 40 ft., swim 80 ft.The Scald uses its boiling aura and reach to punish creatures that crowd it, then drives them away from the vent with Tail attacks and Scalding Plume. It swims through the chimney channels to control distance, reserving Legendary Resistance for effects that would restrain it, remove it from its lair, or compromise the vent. It prefers to end a fight by scattering intruders, but becomes lethal if they threaten the chimney itself.

- Hessa's Driftwood Whistle (keepsake)A small, weathered whistle of pale driftwood, preserved in a sheltered space between its teeth. It produces no sound when blown.

Background
The Scald has guarded the largest chimney in the Sovereign Basin for longer than the nearby harbors have stood. It learned the vent's breathing through its bones: the pressure's low shudder, the mineral tang before a plume, the change in current when a deep passage opens. A formative turning came when a crew of frightened vent-workers tried to seal a failing shaft with crude iron braces. The shaft ruptured, and The Scald dragged survivors from the scalding surge while their panic and tools nearly choked the vent. Since then, it distrusts hurried surface repairs more than deliberate trespass. It keeps watch from the Quiet Mile and tests intruders before deciding whether to speak or strike. It wants the chimney left open and its balance undisturbed, yet recognizes that factional siphon works may be altering the pressure beyond its own reach. It remembers a drowned worker named Hessa, who once traded the driftwood whistle for safe passage; it has never learned why the whistle makes no sound.
Role in the story
A dangerous regional guardian and a potential ally at the Quiet Mile. The Scald embodies the tension between protecting a necessary heat source and resisting desperate attempts to control it.
“A formative turning came when a crew of frightened vent-workers tried to seal a failing shaft with crude iron braces.”
- Faction
- No formal faction. The Scald is an independent custodian of the chimney fields and opposes any operation that threatens their thermal flow.
