Oskeld Marn
Oskeld Marn
At the table
Voice
A breathy, steady voice with a dry, slightly gravelly texture, as though shaped by cold air and long hours speaking through diving gear. It carries cleanly over machinery without needing to rise. Her consonants land firmly, especially in names and directions.
She speaks in evenly paced, practical sentences shaped by years of giving instructions through water, pressure suits, and noisy machinery. Her words have a breathy edge, and names come out crisp, as if she is setting a marker in place. She rarely wastes a sentence on reassurance; when she offers comfort, it is usually a clear instruction someone can follow.
Speech patterns
How to play them
Treat Oskeld as a principled antagonist, not a cackling villain. She will hear practical evidence and honor demonstrated competence, but she will not soften merely because someone condemns her. Questions about the altered stones draw an unvarnished admission. To change her course, the party must offer credible evidence of what the bell's answer means or a workable plan that protects the people her decision was meant to save.
Goal
Prevent the bell's answer from reaching a wider audience until she is convinced it cannot endanger the settlements and routes.
Motivation
Oskeld believes the bell's answer could bring a danger that outweighs the lives lost by stopping people from reaching it. Her certainty is less a lack of fear than a way of keeping fear from making the decision for her.
Appearance
A broad, deep-chested Deep Jotun-Kin woman with slate-blue skin, its fine pebbled texture most visible along her shoulders. Moisture beads on her face and armor, catching lanternlight like tiny flecks of glass. Dark hair is bound back with practical cord, and her long, composed face gives little away. She walks with a slow rolling tread, testing each deck plank before trusting it; when she waits, she puts her weight evenly through both feet and becomes startlingly still. Unexpectedly, she keeps a narrow strip of bright saffron cloth tucked inside her armor, the only vivid thing she wears.
Clothing
A masterworked Warden's rig-plate fitted over layered diving wool, with sealed joints, broad shoulder guards, and a belt of stone-marking tools. The metal is scuffed and salt-dulled. A small saffron cloth strip is kept beneath the breastplate.
Body language
Her shoulders remain squared even at rest, and her hands hang open rather than near her hammer. Before a difficult answer, she draws one audible breath through her nose. In a fight, she plants her heels and turns her torso with the slow certainty of a bulkhead settling into place.

Personality
12 traits and drivesOskeld is disciplined enough to listen through an accusation and stubborn enough to act before consensus forms. She is formal with strangers and unexpectedly patient with frightened crews. When she is tired, she checks the same route marks twice; when angry, she becomes more direct, not louder. She can respect a person while opposing everything they intend to do.

She uses Turn the Stone to break formations or push intruders away from allies, then focuses hammer attacks on the threat most capable of bypassing her line. She uses Warden's Advance to reposition allies rather than chase a fleeing foe. If the encounter turns against her, she withdraws toward stable ground and a defensible route instead of fighting to the death.

Background
Oskeld learned route-keeping from her mother, a rescue pilot who taught that a marker is a promise made to people who cannot see the shore. During a pressure breach early in Oskeld's service, she followed a correctly marked channel and arrived too late to save a crew trapped beyond a collapsing shelf. In the aftermath, she came to believe that some knowledge is itself a hazard. Years later, convinced that the pulse beneath the sea heralded a danger beyond the region's ability to survive, she turned the Wrong-Way Stones to obstruct the route. She marked her alteration in the Warden manner, hiding neither the act nor her conviction that it was necessary. She now works alongside Halvren Cold-Vein in an alliance neither of them needs to explain aloud. Her old rescue partner, a veteran pilot, has begun comparing Oskeld's stone marks against archived route records.
Role in the story
A major Trench-Warden antagonist whose deliberate alteration of the Wrong-Way Stones obstructs the party's investigation. Her motive is protective, but her willingness to make that choice for others puts her in direct conflict with the party.
“In the aftermath, she came to believe that some knowledge is itself a hazard.”
- Faction
- Trench-Warden; currently allied with Halvren Cold-Vein in the effort to silence the bell.
