Mira
Mira
At the table
Voice
A dry, clear voice with a slight rasp from dust and long days speaking across busy road traffic. Her words carry without shouting, and she makes names and dates land with the force of a clerk's stamp.
She speaks in clean, measured clauses, shaped by years of reading claims aloud to impatient travelers over wagon noise. Her consonants are crisp, and she stresses dates, names, and directions as if laying them down one at a time. When angry, she speaks faster and more directly, interrupting herself to correct an imprecise word.

How to play them
Mira begins by asking what the visitors need to cross, carry, or prove. She is helpful when they provide verifiable details and guarded when they demand access to her records. Earn her trust by protecting witnesses, checking facts before making accusations, or helping keep a lane open.
Goal
Preserve access through all three lanes while finding a safe, credible way to bring the false closure records to light.
Motivation
Mira believes that open roads keep strangers from becoming enemies. She is motivated by fairness, but also by guilt over the Salt Cart Closing and a stubborn need to prove her records can prevent a repeat.
Appearance
Mira holds herself as though every floorboard has a line painted down its middle. She walks in brisk, even steps, favoring no side, but stops so abruptly that hurried people nearly collide with her. Her grooming is meticulous: silver hair lies in narrow braids pinned flat against her skull, and her nails are cut square and ink-free. Her face is long and composed, with fine creases at the corners of her eyes from years spent studying small print. Unexpectedly, she keeps a tiny, bright-red wooden bird on her desk and turns it to face whoever is speaking.
Clothing
A practical slate-green coat with deep inner pockets, a high collar polished smooth by years of wear, and a cream sash bearing the clerk's plain route insignia. Her boots are clean at the seams but permanently dusted at the soles.
Body language
She keeps her shoulders level and her hands visible on the table. When a claim lacks a witness, she taps two fingers against the wood twice, then waits without looking away. Under pressure she squares every paper in reach, even if the room is shaking.

Personality
12 traits and drivesMira is patient with confused travelers and sharply impatient with people who use authority to avoid answering questions. In public she is brisk, organized, and reassuring; alone, she rereads disputed claims until dawn. She wants to trust her colleagues, yet tests every statement they make. When frightened, she becomes more precise rather than more soothing.

AC 12 · HP 7 · 30 ft.Mira is a level 0 noncombatant, not a trained adventurer. She avoids a fight, uses Clerk's Direction to help someone escape, and tries to put a desk or a closed door between herself and danger. If trapped, she uses her desk-weight or shortbow only to make space to flee.

Background
Mira was raised among roadside waystations, where her family copied permits for travelers who could not read them. In her youth, she believed that a correctly recorded claim could protect anyone. That belief broke during the Salt Cart Closing: an official ordered the western lane shut on the strength of a witness statement that Mira knew had been copied from an older case. She refused to certify it, and watched a crowd of stranded families nearly come to blows while the officials argued over whose authority mattered. Since then she has served as Junction 4's senior lane clerk, maintaining a parallel archive of route closures, claims, and witness names. Her apprentice Kzali thinks she should expose the records at once; her supervisor Bruk insists the evidence must be checked before it can be used. Mira wants all three lanes kept open, but the documents she has gathered could implicate the entire clerical office in years of falsified closures. She sends money to a cousin living at the old scent-named rest stop called Clove-Sneeze, and has not told them how close the office is to collapse.
Role in the story
A careful source of travel permits and local knowledge, and a potential ally whose evidence could expose a dangerous pattern of fraudulent lane closures.
