Ortheon Brel
Bard, College of Eloquence
Ortheon Brel
Species
Lightfoot halfling
Appearance
Ortheon is a broad-shouldered halfling with a careful, almost ceremonial way of moving. He stands on the balls of his feet as if listening through the floor, and his head turns toward voices before his eyes do. His skin has the warm brown tone of polished walnut, with faint pale freckles scattered across his knuckles like grains of salt. His hair is thick, silver-brown, and worn in two short braids tied with blue thread. He has a round, kindly face, but his expression rarely settles into one emotion for long. He may smile while delivering an accusation, or look wounded while making a devastatingly accurate joke. The unexpected thing about him is his hands: they are large, callused, and visibly strong, more suited to a cooper or mason than a courtly advocate. Within a minute of meeting him, most people notice that he never interrupts another speaker. Instead, he silently counts their breaths, fingertips tapping the rhythm against his thumb.
“Measured, resonant, and unusually clear. Every sentence seems to have been edited before leaving his mouth.”

Distinguishing Features
He listens with his whole body, often turning his chest toward a speaker before turning his face.
His voice produces a faint harmonic overtone when he speaks with magical force.
He carries a tiny slate on which he records the exact time whenever someone changes their story.
His silver-brown braids are tied with blue thread taken from the robe of the first witness he successfully protected.
He has unusually strong hands and unconsciously tests the weight and balance of every object placed near him.
Voice
“A warm baritone with a soft rasp at the edges, like a wooden flute played beside running water. His words carry farther than they should, and when he is frightened the sound narrows into a thin, breathless thread.”
Clothing
A dark teal waistcoat over a cream shirt, both cut for movement rather than fashion, beneath a long russet coat lined with scraps of copied legal documents. He wears reinforced trousers, soft leather boots, and a brass signet ring bearing the symbol of the civic archives. His collar is fastened with a tiny silver tuning fork.
Body Language
Ortheon stands slightly angled toward the nearest source of sound, even when facing someone directly. His left hand rests against his ribs when he is calm. When rattled, he stops breathing for three or four seconds, then exhales in a controlled whistle through his teeth. He touches the blue thread in his hair whenever he is about to say something that may damage a relationship.
