Jor Heimskrsson
Jor Heimskrsson
At the table
Voice
His voice has the rasp of salt-dried breath and a faint wet resonance, as if each word has passed through a narrow space in his throat. The sound is shaped by cold sea air, shipboard shouting, and the troll language's low, chesty consonants. He speaks plainly and at a practical pace; troll phrases sometimes end in a subdued growl. His name is crisp and fully human-sounding by contrast.
Jor speaks as if he expects to be understood, with direct statements and few explanations. He slips into troll words and rough, low growls mid-sentence without noticing, especially when startled or using magic. He says his own name clearly and carefully. His old Norse speech remains intact, but pauses and clipped phrasing betray lessons in secrecy and observation.
Speech patterns
How to play them
Jor initially presents himself as a rescued, miracle-surviving nobleman's son. Treat him as wary rather than hostile: he responds best to practical questions, food offered without pressure, and respect for his choices. He will share ordinary details readily but deflect questions about the wreck and his time in the North Sea. If confronted with proof of his troll nature, he first tests whether the other person intends to exploit or expose him.
Goal
Secure a life outside his family's succession struggle without remaining a captive instrument of the trolls, while discovering what happened to the people aboard the wreck.
Motivation
Jor wants to choose his own allegiance and future. The trolls taught him to infiltrate; his family expected him to compete for status; he would rather make a name on his own terms, but is unsure whether he can ever be trusted to do so.
Appearance
Jor looks recognizably like the young Norse nobleman who vanished at sea, but as if the North Sea has kept and remade him. He stands a little taller than his remembered 5 feet 10 inches and is still growing, with a long, lean frame that shifts with a swimmer's balance. His pale blond hair is fading toward near-white, lying in wet ropes against his brow. His skin has the washed-out cast of someone kept from sunlight, and a faint salt sheen gathers at his temples. He remains soaked even after shelter, his ragged clothes heavy and dark with seawater. His webbed hands and feet are easiest to notice when he reaches or steps barefoot; fine, newly formed gill-slits crease his neck and twitch when touched. His jaw has grown broad, and small, bluntly pointed teeth show when he eats. He watches a room by tracking its exits, bowls, and water vessels before he looks at faces. His expressions are unnervingly calm, leaving the impression of a familiar man seen through cold water.
Clothing
A noble Norseman's travel clothes, now ragged, salt-stiff, and perpetually waterlogged: a torn wool tunic, a weather-darkened cloak, worn hose, and boots that squelch. Fine stitching and a once-expensive clasp remain beneath the damage.
Body language
Jor holds himself still, with his chin slightly tucked and shoulders angled toward the nearest exit. His eyes travel around a room before settling on anyone, pausing longest on food, windows, and water. He moves quietly on wet or uneven ground, placing his feet as though testing a ship's deck. When startled, he does not flinch so much as go motionless; when hungry, his jaw works and his lips part enough to show his blunt, altered teeth.

Distinguishing features
Personality
16 traits and drivesJor is still capable of the bright enthusiasm that once sent him looking for a guard's uniform, but captivity has taught him to keep his face calm and his intentions hidden. With strangers he is watchful and matter-of-fact; around food he becomes distracted and almost guileless. In danger he is precise and patient, yet a threat to someone he has begun to trust can draw out the old brawler, sudden and reckless. He wants independence, but has learned to survive by obeying people who claim to own his future.

- Neutral, chiefly concerned with survival and finding a way out of the trolls' designs.

Combat
AC 13 · HP 16 · 30 ft., swim 30 ft.Jor prefers to avoid a fair fight. He uses cover, misdirection, and a quick blade to create an opening, then retreats toward water or a narrow passage. He watches for a chance to disarm or escape rather than seeking a kill. His trained spy habits make him wary of being surrounded, while his old urge to brawl can briefly surface when an ally is threatened.

Background
Jor Heimskrsson is Heimskr's fifth son, sent north toward Iceland to claim a name, land, and wealth of his own rather than be swallowed by the family succession crisis. Before the voyage, he was excitable, quick to brawl, and eager to serve in a guard company. Hearing that a succession crisis was coming changed his plans: he chose the sea and a future independent of his brothers. The ship wrecked in the North Sea. Jor survived, but trolls took him from the wreck and kept him captive. They trained him as a spy, taught him their language and practical magic, and remade him into a sea-troll changeling. He has completed his spy training and enchantment, though he conceals how thoroughly he has changed. When he returns, he presents himself as a miracle survivor of the wreck, still dressed in the nobleman's clothes he wore when lost. His captivity has made him slow to trust, but not helpless or foolish. He believes people understand him until they prove otherwise, and then slips into troll speech without noticing. He is trying to learn whether his family still considers him dead, what the trolls intend to do with their trained agent, and whether the old plan of making a life in Iceland can still be his own.
Role in the story
A presumed-dead son who returns as a credible miracle survivor, a potential ally with intimate knowledge of troll methods, and a living mystery whose calm manner hides captivity, training, and a changing body. If the party failed to find him earlier, his return can reveal that the trolls have been preparing an agent among human communities.
