At the table

Voice

A dry, chest-resonant voice shaped by years of cold outdoor work and the vibration of engines. His consonants are carefully placed, with a slight rasp at the ends of long phrases. When rattled, he draws a delayed breath that briefly catches in his throat; his next words arrive clipped and workmanlike.

He speaks in measured, practical sentences, with a Bavarian German cadence that remains noticeable in English. He uses polite forms and precise work terms, rarely volunteering a story unless it has a useful point. Under strain his breath catches before his words do, and he becomes blunt rather than louder.

Speech patterns

Uses formal courtesy even with people he dislikes, addressing them as though they were customers.
Talks about machinery in precise, concrete terms and about his past in clipped fragments.
Answers questions about his age with a joke or a change of subject.
Calls the woods 'the timber' when discussing his old work, and avoids naming what lives there.

How to play them

Begin with courtesy and practical help. Klaus is easy to approach through a repair job, a shared Catholic observance, or a sensible conversation about work. He watches for signs that someone has recognized his history. If challenged, he offers an incomplete truth, then shifts the subject toward what the other person needs.

Goal

Keep his workshop and outwardly ordinary life intact while learning why the wolfskin is beginning to wear through.

Motivation

Klaus wants to keep control of his appetite and his own story. He tells himself that dependable work, Catholic ritual, and careful manners are proof that he remains a man by choice.

Secret · GM only

Appearance

Klaus is tall enough to make cramped rooms feel smaller, and seems only dimly aware of the space he takes. Wavy blond hair lies in loose, slightly greasy bends, and his grey eyes hold a steady, measuring look. His face is clean-shaven and composed, with the faintly weathered texture of someone who has spent long hours outdoors. He moves carefully, placing each boot as if testing a forest floor for hidden traps. The unexpected detail: he keeps a little paper packet of flower seeds in his mechanic's jacket and scatters them beside roadside ditches.

Clothing

2026 work clothes: a weatherproof mechanic's jacket with grease-dark cuffs, heavy trousers, steel-toed boots, and a knitted cap when outside. He dresses plainly and keeps the clothes maintained, though never immaculate. A small Catholic medal hangs beneath his shirt.

Body language

He occupies doorways without seeming to notice and turns his shoulders sideways only at the last second. His breathing is normally deep and even, with the faint rasp of someone accustomed to cold air and workshop dust. When rattled, he takes one breath too late, then holds the next at the top of his chest; his jaw works once before his courteous expression returns.

Distinguishing features

His height and stillness make him conspicuous in a room; he seems to notice only when someone else has to move around him.
His grey eyes stay on a speaker's hands as often as their face.
A folded packet of flower seeds rides in his work jacket beside his tools.
The wolfskin smells faintly of wet leaves, old smoke, and something animal even after careful cleaning.

Personality

14 traits and drives

Methodical and composed in the workshop, where he can make damaged things function again; courteous in company, where he uses good manners to keep people at a distance. In the woods he becomes patient, attentive, and cruelly curious. He can show real tenderness toward small living things, such as roadside flowers, while showing little mercy to a person he has decided to hunt.

Alignment
Courteous when it costs him nothing; predatory when he has chosen a target.

Quirks

Leaves a pinch of flower seeds near roadside ditches and workshop walls, even in places where they are unlikely to grow.
Taps an engine casing twice before starting work, then listens with his eyes closed.
Sets an empty chair slightly away from the table, as if reserving space for someone who has not arrived.
Counts his steps across a room when he thinks no one is watching.

Habits

Maintains ordinary routines even when the situation becomes uncanny, as if good manners could keep the world in its proper shape.
Checks doors, hinges, and engines by touch before trusting what he sees.
When he has chosen a quarry, he becomes patient and methodical rather than openly excited.
After a hunt, he washes his hands carefully, even when they are already clean.

Traits · 4

He values precision but will improvise ruthlessly when a plan breaks.
He enjoys the hunt, yet insists on ordinary courtesies before and after violence.
He is sincerely drawn to Catholic ritual but will not say whether he believes it can save him.
He dislikes being pitied more than being feared.

Flaws · 4

Sadistic when he believes he can act without consequence.
Uses manners as camouflage rather than as evidence of kindness.
Treats people as problems to be studied and managed.
Refuses to discuss his age, the brigade, or the bargain behind the pelt.

Fears · 3

That the thing in the woods will come to collect what Klaus owes.
That the wolfskin will fail while he is wearing it.
That he is no longer capable of feeling remorse, only the habit of performing it.

Wants and needs · 3

Needs the wolfskin mended or a way to understand why it is failing.
Wants his workshop and carefully maintained routine left undisturbed.
Needs someone trustworthy enough to hear the truth about his bargain, though he resists seeking that person.

Combat

HP 3 · Use the table's normal human movement rules; custom wolfskin movement is not assigned a separate numeric value.

Avoids fair fights. In human shape he uses cover, tools, and a prepared escape route. He prefers to track a target in darkness and use the wolfskin only when isolation and terrain favor him. He will retreat rather than risk losing the pelt.

Custom Other feature. Wolfskin. Wearing his pelt lets Klaus take a wolfish hunting shape; the change is physical and painful, not an illusion. The pelt must remain with him, and damage to it carries over as a severe vulnerability.
Custom Other feature. Night Hunter. In darkness and wooded terrain, Klaus can follow a fresh trail with unnerving patience. This grants fictional positioning, not a numeric bonus.
Custom Other feature. Mechanic's Eye. Klaus can quickly identify a machine's likely failure point, provided he can inspect it.

Actions

Workman's Strike. In human shape, attacks with a heavy wrench or a firearm if he has one ready. Resolve using the table's chosen Other rules; no system-specific damage value is assumed.
Wolfskin Lunge. Custom feature: If his wolfskin is on and he can reach a target, Klaus lunges, bites, and tries to drag them out of sight. The target's chance to resist depends on the table's Other rules.
Make It Fail. Custom feature: Klaus can spend a moment studying a machine, then sabotage one exposed component or make a hurried repair with suitable tools. The outcome depends on access, time, and the table's Other rules.

Services they sell

Repairs vehicles, tools, and machinery.
Can inspect a mechanical failure and explain a plausible cause.
Can guide travelers through familiar Bavarian woodland routes.

Rewards they can give

A careful repair, including an explanation of what is likely to break next.
Directions through forest roads that are difficult to find on a map.
The temporary loan of a useful tool, if he trusts the borrower.

Equipment

  • Workshop wrench (tool)A heavy, well-used wrench with a handle wrapped for grip; an ordinary tool that can also serve as a weapon.
  • Wolfskin (custom supernatural item)A wolf pelt with its head and paws intact. Klaus keeps it wrapped and hidden when not wearing it.
  • Wildflower seeds (personal item)A small packet of seeds, kept folded inside waxed paper.
  • Catholic medal (keepsake)A worn Catholic medal on a chain, usually concealed beneath his shirt.

Possessions

His wolfskin, wrapped and kept out of sight.
A well-used mechanic's tool roll.
A packet of wildflower seeds.
A worn Catholic medal.
A pocket prayer book with old names written in its margins.

Background

Klaus remembers the forest first as a workplace. His first job was logging, and he learned to judge a tree by the sound it made under the axe and the way the wind moved through its crown. He wanted more than a dangerous wage and a life measured in felled timber, so he took whatever work offered a new road: hauling, repair work, military service, and eventually the trade of a mechanic. He served through both world wars and was attached to a werewolf brigade, where the wolfskin became both an instrument of war and a bargain he has never properly explained. Long ago, alone in the Bavarian woods, he asked something there to change him. It gave him a wolf's hide. He does not discuss what the thing was or what it took in return. A formative night came during the first war, when he used the skin to hunt a man who had surrendered. The easy pleasure he felt afterward frightened him less than the realization that he had expected to feel frightened. He has spent the years since building rituals of manners around that appetite. In 2026, he repairs vehicles and machinery, takes occasional night work, and maintains an appearance of ordinary life. He is fond of Catholicism, though his faith lives uneasily beside the bargain in the woods. He never speaks of immortality. His present problems are practical and intimate: the pelt is wearing thin at one shoulder, an old brigade contact may have recognized it, and Klaus has begun hunting nearer to places where people know his name.

Role in the story

A courteous mechanic and former wartime hunter whose supernatural bargain links modern practical life to a dangerous older presence in the Bavarian woods. He can be a source of repairs and local knowledge, a deeply unsettling ally, or a patient antagonist.

Formerly served with a werewolf brigade during the world wars. No current formal affiliation.

Known connections

A retired brigade comrade, whose name Klaus refuses to say aloud, may know the origins of his wolfskin.
A local parish priest tolerates Klaus's regular attendance but suspects his confessions omit the most important parts.
The mechanics and customers who rely on his repairs know him as dependable, if unnervingly watchful.
