At the table

Voice

A dry, breathy rasp shaped by cold air, roof dust, and long hours calling distances across wind. His consonants are crisp and hiss lightly through his teeth; when amused, a rough little chuckle breaks the precision. In gryphon form, ordinary speech gives way to short, chesty cries and clicks.

He speaks in clipped, practical phrases, with dry humor tucked into the ends of sentences. His word choice comes from a scout's habits: bearings, height, wind, cover, and distance. When upset, his voice drops into a rough rasp, as if air has caught against a feathered throat; he does not become softer or more formal.

Speech patterns

Uses dry observations to defuse tension, often pointing out the practical absurdity of a plan.
Asks brief, specific questions about routes, weather, and who has already seen a message.
Calls Nakarnia by a childhood nickname only in private.
When unsettled, answers a personal question with a question about the nearest high ground.

How to play them

Build trust through useful observations rather than grand assurances. Be candid about immediate risks, avoid treating him as a curiosity, and offer a choice of routes or roles. He warms quickly to practical competence and to anyone who respects Nakarnia without flattering him.

Goal

Uncover who is seeking control of the royal air routes, keep Nakarnia safe without becoming his permanent shield, and learn whether his gryphon nature has a history beyond his mother's story.

Motivation

To protect the people who gave him a home without surrendering his right to choose where home is.

Secret · GM only

Appearance

Gayle is lean and long-limbed, with sun-browned skin and dark hair that breaks into fine, featherlike points at his temples. His amber eyes track motion in quick, precise flicks. He keeps his hair meticulously combed and his bracers polished, an unexpectedly fastidious habit for a scout who regularly returns with burrs in his clothes. He occupies space as if every room has an invisible high ledge: he perches on chair backs, leans against pillars, and leaves a clear path to the nearest window. In gryphon form, tawny feathers lie sleek over a powerful body, a golden beak catches the light, and his broad wings cast a moving shadow across the royal gardens. Even at rest, he holds predator-stillness, then moves with abrupt, startling speed.

Clothing

Loose, earth-colored linen tunic, close-fitted trousers, weathered leather bracers, and soft boots suited to climbing. He wears a narrow cord at his waist to secure essentials before shifting and leaves ornamental court clothes to the household tailors.

Body language

He angles his shoulders toward exits and open air, balances on narrow surfaces with unconscious ease, and goes utterly still when he hears a distant bird call. Around Nakarnia his posture loosens; around officials he keeps his chin level and his weight ready to move.

Personality

14 traits and drives

Gayle is pragmatic and watchful, yet his dry humor surfaces whenever a room grows too solemn. His loyalty is fierce, but he distrusts obligations that are never spoken aloud. In danger he becomes concise and startlingly decisive; with Nakarnia he is easy, laughing, and sometimes boyish. Alone, he is restless and contemplative, drawn to rooftops and the far horizon. He wants to be known as a person, though he sometimes presents himself as a useful pair of wings.

Alignment
Protective and independent; he follows personal loyalties before courtly rules.

Quirks

Counts the steps to the nearest window whenever he enters a new room.
Turns cups so their handles point toward the nearest exit.
Collects loose feathers but refuses to identify which ones came from his own wings.
Taps twice on a roof tile before stepping onto it, as if asking permission.
When pleased, makes a tiny clicking sound with his tongue that he insists is not a bird call.

Habits

Scans rooftops, windows, and open sky before settling into conversation.
When anxious, rubs his thumb along a bracer seam as small feathers rise at his hairline.
With Nakarnia, becomes openly playful and lets silences go unfilled.
After a difficult flight, checks each feather along his wing before sleeping.

That his gryphon shape is not a form he chooses, but a nature that will eventually consume his human attachments
Being captured and used as a court's living instrument
That protecting Nakarnia will make Nakarnia mistake love for a debt

Wants and needs · 4

Wants the freedom to leave the royal household without being treated as ungrateful.
Needs to tell Nakarnia about the capture threat before the danger becomes immediate.
Wants his mother's gryphon story investigated on its own merits, not used to define him.
Needs allies who see his judgment and choices, not only his wings.

Combat

HP 42 · Humanoid: ordinary walking pace for the table's system. Gryphon: custom flight capability, with speed and carrying limits set by the GM to suit the scene.

Prefers to observe from above, identify the leader or escape route, and avoid a fair fight. He uses a bow from cover in humanoid form, then shifts to disrupt pursuers or extract an ally. He will not dive through crowded spaces where his wings could injure bystanders.

Background

Gayle Floshern is the son of an elven father and a half-elven mother, a botanist named Omiya. His childhood was split between her plant beds and the airy corridors of Quadra Virex's royal mansion, where Lord Hadrian Castor allowed him to grow up beside his son, Nakarnia. Gayle and Nakarnia became inseparable: one learned courtly escape routes, the other learned which roofs could bear their weight. Omiya said that, while gathering cliff herbs, she once met a wild gryphon that watched her without fear. She believed the encounter marked her unborn child. Gayle dismissed the story until his first transformation, a frightening, painful change during a storm that left him on a roof with talons gripping the tiles and no memory of climbing there. That experience changed him from a restless boy into a careful observer of his own instincts. He trained as a scout and took service with the Sky Warden line, a Qhacret tradition of aerial watchers, though his loyalties remain tangled with the household that raised him. Now he is asked to escort Nakarnia through increasingly dangerous court business while a neighboring power presses for access to the royal air routes. Gayle suspects the request is a pretext to capture a living shapeshifter. He has not told Nakarnia how close the threat has come, and his mother is urging him to leave the mansion before duty turns into a cage.

Role in the story

A trusted friend, scout, and potential guide whose divided loyalties make him a natural ally in court intrigue. His hidden evidence can reveal a threat to the royal household, while his desire for freedom may force the party to help him choose a future beyond service.
