Voice
Cadoc's voice has a dry, slightly rasping edge, shaped by years of salt air and the habit of speaking over rigging and surf. He breathes through phrases with controlled pauses, as if measuring how much air a promise deserves. His laugh is brief and surprisingly warm; his sect's drawn-out exhalations sound eerily unlike it.
He speaks in a practiced harbor cadence, clipping the ends of words as if saving breath for the next negotiation. His sentences are carefully balanced, full of quantities, dates, and conditional promises. When reciting Shersbur doctrine, he draws each exhalation out until it sounds less like speech than air being pulled through a narrow crack.
Speech patterns
How to play them
Offer practical help first, then ask for one small piece of information in return. Cadoc is warm and attentive when people discuss their needs, but he quietly notes every debt and contradiction. He responds to direct suspicion with candor about his usefulness, not with a denial of his faith. If treated with respect, he may share the sect's creation story as a genuine belief rather than a sales pitch.
Goal
Keep Vesta's crew alive and useful while discovering whether the Shersbur Sect's inward Flame can be reached without unmaking the world he has come to value.
Motivation
Cadoc wants to preserve the people and knowledge around him, while proving that the Shersbur Sect's revelation can be understood without surrendering everything to the void.
Appearance
Cadoc stands with his weight pitched forward onto the balls of his feet, as if a floor might become a deck at any moment. He moves in neat, economical steps, then abruptly leans close when a detail interests him. His narrow face is pale and dry-looking, like paper kept too long in a salt cellar. His hands are broad at the knuckles, permanently ink-dark around the nails, with tiny calluses where a quill rests; he rubs his thumb over the edge of a page whenever he is thinking. Loose charcoal robes hang from his shoulders, their sleeves streaked with ink, and a hurriedly sewn red eclipse over waves marks his chest. A driftwood half-mask covers his upper face, carved with ridges like tide-worn grain and painted with one spiraling eye. The unexpected detail is a little brass bell tied inside his left cuff, muffled with a twist of cloth so it never rings.

Body language
He waits pitched forward, heels barely settled, and keeps his ledger tucked against his ribs like a second breastbone. His ink-stained fingers arrange objects into tidy rows. When someone lies, he does not stare them down; he looks at the space where their signature would go.

Distinguishing features
Personality
14 traits and drivesCadoc makes strangers feel heard because he genuinely studies what they want, yet he is always sorting those wants into risks and leverage. In a calm room he is urbane, patient, and almost companionable. Under pressure he becomes briskly practical and offers concessions with unsettling speed. When someone is cruel to the powerless, his charm drops away and he becomes stubbornly, unexpectedly hard to move.
- Alignment
- Neutral evil, though his manners and bargains often make him seem merely pragmatic

AC 15 · HP 52 · 30 ft.Cadoc begins at range with eldritch blast, using Repelling Blast to push enemies away from allies or toward hazards. He uses darkness to break lines of sight, hunger of Hadar to deny a chokepoint, and counterspell to frustrate enemy spellcasters. He prefers to negotiate while protected by cover and uses dimension door to escape when cornered. He bites only when badly hurt or when a target is isolated. He avoids sunlight and running water, and his allies know not to mistake retreat for surrender.

Background
Cadoc was born mortal in a harbor town that kept its dead in sealed salt-cellars, where he learned to copy cargo tallies for captains who could not read. During a wreck, he was trapped beneath a capsized counting house with a dying sailor and a waterlogged book of prayers. In the dark, he heard what he later called the inward breath: a silence that seemed to draw warmth out of the world. He survived, but the sailor did not. Years afterward, the Shersbur Sect found him preserving the wreck's records and offered him the explanation he craved. They taught him that the First Breath inhaled the Gathering Flame into the void, and that the world is only the bright surface of a deeper reality. The sect made him a Hollow Keeper, entrusting him with its records and, eventually, vampiric undeath. Cadoc was loaned to the Crimson Syndicate because his meticulous accounts could keep a pirate fleet supplied and profitable. Captain Vesta Lapidana values his work but tests his loyalty. Marcus Argentus watches for evidence of betrayal, while Claudia Vesna periodically borrows his records and returns them annotated with impossible mechanical diagrams. Cadoc is trying to reconcile the sect's command to serve its hidden purpose with his growing attachment to the crew whose lives he has made legible on paper.
Role in the story
A useful but compromised lieutenant who can connect the party to the Crimson Syndicate, its captain, and the Shersbur Sect. Cadoc may be an informant, an uneasy ally, or the person whose accurate records reveal that a seemingly ordinary shipment is tied to a cosmic threat.
