Tepka
Tepka
At the table
“when he means it and”
Voice
A dry, slightly rasping voice with a soft catch at the end of longer sentences, as if he has inhaled too much sawdust over the years. He projects easily across the shop without shouting, and his words have the clipped precision of someone used to giving instructions near sharp tools. When angered, he gets faster and more emphatic, striking the counter lightly for punctuation.
Tepka speaks in concise, workmanlike sentences shaped by years of explaining grain, balance, and repairs over a noisy counter. He favors concrete comparisons and pauses to find the exact word rather than filling silence. When talking about Ivo, his sentences become more detailed and then abruptly stop.
Speech patterns
How to play them
Begin with a fair price and a practical question about the customer's needs. Earn his trust by treating craft and safety seriously. If pressed about Ivo, he becomes evasive at first, then honest if the questioner shows patience rather than demanding absolution.
Goal
Keep Bow-End independent, find a sustainable source of straight shafts, and learn whether Ivo's final route could have been made safer.
Motivation
Craft should make a person's choices more deliberate, not more dangerous. Tepka wants to preserve the dignity of his trade while keeping the shop alive.
Appearance
Tepka has a compact, slightly forward-leaning frame and moves with the careful economy of someone accustomed to working around sharp tools. His brown skin is usually dusted with pale wood flour, and tiny feather barbs cling to his sleeves like stubborn burrs. He keeps his thick black hair combed into a ruler-straight side part, then checks that part whenever a customer mentions a bad bargain. His eyes are dark hazel, alert to crooked grain and concealed hands. The unexpected detail is his immaculate, glossy fingernails, buffed like a courtier's despite the resin, shavings, and glue of his trade. People leave with the impression of a man who could spot a warped shaft across a crowded room, and who would notice if they moved his chair.
Clothing
A moss-brown work coat with deep inner pockets, a cream linen shirt, a leather apron marked by resin, and soft-soled boots for quiet movement around the shop. His cuffs are carefully brushed clean each morning, even though they rarely stay that way.
Body language
He turns arrow shafts between thumb and forefinger while listening, shoulders angled toward the workbench as though ready to return to it. He looks customers in the face when discussing price, but glances at their hands when they discuss who will use the bow. When embarrassed, he straightens the tools already arranged in straight lines.

Combat
AC 10 · HP 4 · 30 ft.Tepka is a shopkeeper, not a combatant. If threatened, he backs toward the storeroom, calls for help, and uses shelving or a counter for cover. He fires a shortbow only if escape is blocked or someone nearby is in immediate danger; he aims to create distance rather than pursue.

Background
Tepka learned fletching from his mother, who ran a traveling repair stall and taught him that a badly balanced arrow could betray a hunter before any monster did. At nineteen, he settled in the riverside market town of Kettleford and opened Bow-End in a former cooper's shed. Years later, during the winter siege of a nearby watch post, Tepka volunteered to repair the defenders' arrows. He watched his closest friend, a watch runner named Ivo, leave with a bundle Tepka had fletched and never return. The arrows were sound; the route was not. Since then, Tepka insists on asking customers where their weapons are going, though he knows he has no right to demand an answer. He still sends a small parcel of mended gear each spring to Ivo's widowed sister, Nessa, who refuses to call the parcels charity. His present trouble is a shortage of straight ash shafts after an upstream flood ruined the old coppice, while a well-connected buyer keeps trying to purchase all the remaining stock. Tepka wants to secure a new supply without letting Bow-End become a tool for anyone's private militia.
Role in the story
A grounded local ally, source of reliable archery supplies, and moral witness to the consequences of weapon-making. Tepka can connect the party to Ivo's old route and the people affected by it, but his advice may expose his own compromised judgment.
