At the table

Voice

Clear and slightly rasped, with the breath control of someone accustomed to calling over weather and river noise. Her everyday directions come out brisk and clipped; bargaining terms are paced evenly and repeated exactly. She laughs in a rough, startling burst rather than a delicate chuckle.

Her voice is dry-edged and clear, shaped by years of calling directions into wind and over rushing water. She clips the ends off routine instructions, then takes careful, even breaths when stating the terms of a bargain. Her laugh is a sudden, rough bark, and her old road-sign phrases carry the clipped cadence of someone used to being heard outdoors.

Speech patterns

Uses plain, workmanlike words and concrete comparisons: a promise is a plank, a lie is a loose nail.
Asks what someone is willing to give up before asking what they want.
Refers to old legends as stories that got their boots muddy.
When making a bargain, repeats its terms back in the same words the other person used.

How to play them

Treat Efa as a capable traveler before treating her as a legend. She responds to useful questions, honest uncertainty, and offers of labor. She resists flattery and tests grand promises by asking for one small, immediate commitment. If shown kindness without an agenda, she becomes unexpectedly funny.

Goal

Repair the failing waymarks before flood season and persuade the communities along them to maintain the crossings together.

Motivation

To keep people alive without making them dependent on fear of her.

Secret · GM only

Appearance

Efa has the compact, weather-worked look of someone who has spent years outdoors: long face, broad brow, and skin with the matte texture of old parchment warmed by rain. Fine, pale lines like rootlets show at her temples when the light catches them. Her dark hair is cropped unevenly at the jaw and perpetually escapes its cord. She stands with her weight pitched forward onto the balls of her feet, as if a road might open beneath her at any moment. In a room, she picks the place where she can see both the door and the hearth, then keeps shifting her stance by inches. The unexpected detail is her loud, practical laugh: a full-throated bark that makes people expect a tavern joke from the woman everyone swears once stopped an army.

Clothing

A patched brown coat of dense, rainproof wool over a plain linen shirt, wrapped calves, and scuffed boots. A length of red cord holds her hair back. Her belt carries practical tools rather than ornaments, except for a little brass bell with no clapper.

Body language

Waits pitched forward, feet placed as if ready to take a steep path. She watches hands when people speak and glances toward exits when a conversation turns sentimental. At ease, she leans one shoulder against a wall and lets her laugh arrive before her smile.

Distinguishing features

Pale, rootlike tracery at her temples, visible only in slanting light.
A loud, unguarded bark of a laugh that surprises people expecting a solemn legend.
A brass bell without a clapper, worn on her belt.
She shifts her forward-set stance by inches while waiting, as if testing the ground.

Personality

14 traits and drives

Efa is brisk and practical with strangers, but patient with frightened children and people who have made an honest mistake. She can be warm without being reassuring, and stern without enjoying authority. When tired, she turns every disagreement into a negotiation; when amused, she laughs too loudly and needles powerful people. She is proud of having kept her word, yet uncomfortable when anyone calls her noble for it.

Alignment
Protective of ordinary people and distrustful of grand causes; her bargains are binding, but her sense of fairness is personal rather than impartial.

Quirks

Taps a doorframe twice with two knuckles before passing through, even when the doorway is wide open.
Gives directions by naming the smell or sound of a place instead of its distance.
Collects broken buckles and insists they are more useful than good ones because nobody is afraid to borrow them.
Counts the beats between thunder and rain, then offers a different estimate of the weather than everyone else.
When someone tells a story about her, she asks what the horses were doing.

Habits

Counts doorways whenever she enters a building, then pretends she was merely admiring the carpentry.
Offers practical help before discussing a favor or bargain.
When embarrassed, finds a reason to inspect the nearest hinge, latch, or gatepost.
After making a serious promise, presses her thumb to the inside of her wrist as if checking for a pulse.

Traits · 4

Practical kindness: she will mend a stranger's boot before asking why they are traveling.
Suspicious of praise, but secretly pleased when someone remembers a small detail she mentioned.
Respects a clear refusal more than an elaborate excuse.
Enjoys jokes at her own expense, but bristles when others use her legend to intimidate ordinary people.

Flaws · 3

Keeps promises even when circumstances make them cruel or impractical.
Distrusts grand plans so reflexively that she can miss a genuinely useful ally.
Uses humor to dodge gratitude, grief, and apologies.

Fears · 3

That her frightening legend will lead someone to trust her too quickly.
That the old crossings will fail while she is still deciding whether she belongs among the people who depend on them.
That Shisani will discover how much of the famous bargain was luck.

Wants and needs · 4

Needs the failing waymarks repaired before the flood season.
Wants Shisani to stop carrying the burden of correcting every false story alone.
Wants a place at the table when the settlements decide who maintains their shared roads.
Needs to accept that asking for help does not make her promises less binding.

Combat

HP 210 · 30 feet; custom Generic Fantasy movement rate

Efa avoids a fight if a promise, retreat, or changed objective will end it. If forced to fight, she uses thresholds and obstacles to divide opponents, then disables the most dangerous attacker with The Unfinished Promise. The statistics and DCs here are custom Generic Fantasy mechanics, not claims about a fixed published ruleset. For checks, roll d20 plus the relevant named statistic against a GM-set target; DC 15 is a standard challenge.

Custom Generic Fantasy rule. when a check is needed, roll a d20 and add the named statistic; a result of 15 succeeds at a standard challenge, with the GM adjusting for difficulty.
Fae Bargain. Efa can seal a promise with a spoken name and a drop of water. Breaking a bargain causes a consequence agreed on when it is made; it does not compel someone who never consented.
Road Between. Once per scene, Efa can step through a threshold, arch, or hanging curtain and emerge from another such boundary she has seen within a short distance.
Legend's Wake. People who have heard a true account of Efa's deeds may hesitate, bargain, flee, or challenge her when she appears. The reaction depends on the story they believe.

Actions

The Unfinished Promise. Melee or near reach. On a hit, deal damage. The target must succeed on a Resolve check or be unable to speak a deliberate lie until the end of its next turn.
Hearthless Bolt. Choose a creature Efa can see within 60 feet. It takes force damage, or half as much on a successful Agility check. A target that fails is also pushed up to 15 feet.
Borrowed Road. Once per scene, Efa names a boundary she can see within 60 feet: a door, window, bridge, or similar threshold. She and up to two willing creatures step through it and reappear at another visible boundary within 300 feet. This is a custom power, not a canonical spell.

Reactions

A Word Remembered. When a creature Efa can see within 30 feet breaks a spoken promise made to her, Efa may mark it with a visible thread of pale light. Until the end of its next turn, the creature cannot benefit from concealment. Once per scene.
Slip the Threshold. When targeted by an attack while within 5 feet of a doorway or similar threshold, Efa may use Road Between to step through it and emerge at a nearby boundary she can see. The attack misses if she is no longer a valid target.

Services they sell

Guide travelers along concealed roads and across fae boundaries.
Mediate disputes involving broken promises, shared paths, or local fae customs.
Identify neglected waymarks and explain the risks of using them.

Rewards they can give

A reliable route through a dangerous region, provided the travelers help repair its waymarks.
A fair bargain for safe passage, mediation, or knowledge of local fae customs.
A small brass token that lets its bearer recognize one hidden road crossing.

Equipment

  • Promise knife (weapon)A short, dark iron blade whose edge is marked with tiny notches representing bargains kept. It deals the damage listed for The Unfinished Promise.
  • Clapperless bell (keepsake)A brass handbell without a clapper, taken from the ford after the crisis. Efa says it is a reminder, not a relic.
  • Waymark map (tool)A waxed map of local roads, annotated with gates, springs, and crossings that do not appear on ordinary maps.
  • Road kit (travel gear)Needle, waxed thread, small hammer, iron nails, and a coil of rope; all well used.

Possessions

A clapperless brass bell from the ford
A waxed map of hidden waymarks
A small packet of letters from Keshane
A folding knife, repair tools, and a coil of rope

Background

Efa was born among the roadside fae who kept wells, thresholds, and waymarks for travelers. She began as a finder of lost children and a negotiator between villages and the older things living in their fields. Her legend began at the ford now called The Day the Bell Sank. During a famine, a war captain named Keshane tried to force a crossing by driving refugees into the river. Efa bargained for the lives of everyone on the bank and took the captain's oath as her price. The ford swallowed the alarm bell, the soldiers laid down their weapons, and the refugees escaped. Outsiders tell the story as if Efa drowned an entire army. In truth, she gave the captain a way to keep his word and spent years helping him rebuild what he had broken. That mercy changed her: she stopped believing that a frightening reputation was harmless if it kept people safe. She still travels to check on the communities she helped, though many remember her as a threat rather than a neighbor. Her former apprentice, Shisani, now exposes false stories about Efa, while her old friend Thabani wants her to return to the hidden roads before their crossings fail. Efa is currently trying to repair a chain of neglected waymarks before a flood season traps several settlements.

Role in the story

A living legend who can guide the party through fae territory, but whose real value is her knowledge of local people and the promises connecting them. She may become an ally, a difficult negotiator, or a moral counterpoint to heroes who expect power to solve every problem.

“She began as a finder of lost children and a negotiator between villages and the older things living in their fields.”
From their background
Faction
Once a keeper of the old fae waymarks; still respected by their scattered custodians, though she no longer accepts their authority.

Known connections

Shisani is Efa's former apprentice, a traveling storyteller who corrects false accounts of the ford and resents that Efa refuses to correct them herself.
Thabani, Efa's oldest living friend, maintains a hidden network of fae waymarks and believes Efa's absence has let it decay.
Keshane, the retired war captain from the ford, still sends Efa letters asking for advice and never signs them with his title.
The Day the Bell Sank is a ford and roadside shrine. Visitors insist the bell was rung underwater; locals say it was dropped into the river before anyone rang it.
