Wojna
Wojna
At the table
Voice
A dry, fibrous rasp, as though her throat were lined with bark dust. Her voice catches on certain names and carries the hollow resonance of speaking into a tree trunk.
Her words rasp like a saw pulled slowly through wet wood. She forms consonants carefully, as if each one must pass through a knot, and sometimes stops mid-sentence to taste the air. Years of listening from thickets have taught her to recognize a lie by its breath.
Speech patterns
How to play them
She watches newcomers from cover and tests them with a warning question about why they have come. Honest concern for the grove can earn a temporary truce, especially if someone carries a blue bead. Threats to the spring or its living stump provoke an immediate attack.
Goal
Drive the railroad from the grove and preserve the spring's last surviving roots.
Motivation
Grief has hardened into a fierce need to keep the grove alive, while a part of her still wants someone to acknowledge that the destruction was wrong.
Appearance
Wojna resembles a dead tree that has forced itself into the shape of an old woman. Her bark is gray and puckered, with strips of soft rot hanging at the joints; beneath the cracks, faint greenish light pulses like swamp gas. A skirt of shredded bridal lace and dust-coated riding leather drags over roots that serve as her feet. She moves with a slow, listing gait, favoring her left side, then snaps forward with the sudden speed of a branch whipped by a storm. An unexpected detail: tiny blue glass beads are braided into her bark like carefully kept jewelry, each one polished smooth by years of touch.
Clothing
A stained, high-necked bridal dress beneath a cracked oilskin duster, with a tarnished brooch and a leather cartridge belt full of thorn bundles
Body language
She leans left as if listening through the earth, one long hand repeatedly checking the blue beads woven into her bark. When threatened, her shoulders lift and unfold into a crown of dry branches.

She can show careful tenderness toward small living things, yet treats human promises as bait until proven otherwise. When calm, she listens longer than she speaks. When angry, she becomes blunt and physical, snapping branches and closing distance rather than raising her voice.

- Springflower brooch (keepsake)An old silvered brooch shaped like a spring flower, worn through the fabric of her dress.

Possessions
Background
Wojna once guarded a spring-fed grove where stage roads crossed the Esterra frontier. A survey crew marked the trees for a rail spur, and a hired posse drove her people from the grove while she was away bargaining for a treaty. She returned to find the spring choked with ash and her promised bridegroom, a local healer, hanged from her oldest tree. Grief and poison from the burned roots remade her into an undead thing bound to the grove's last living stump. At first she hunted only the killers. When she learned the railroad had paid them, she began stalking surveyors, guards, and anyone who carried its stamped papers. The old healer's sister, Sella, still leaves blue beads at the boundary, hoping to remind Wojna that someone remembers who she was. Wojna has not spoken to her in years, but never harms her.
Role in the story
A territorial antagonist whose grief and purpose can be uncovered through negotiation, investigation, or confrontation. She is dangerous, but her enemies are not necessarily the party's enemies.
“A survey crew marked the trees for a rail spur, and a hired posse drove her people from the grove while she was away bargaining for a treaty.”
- Faction
- No formal allegiance. She is bound to the remnant grove and opposes the railroad's expansion.
