At the table

Voice

A dry, breathy rasp carries well across the farm, roughened by years of calling to animals and working outdoors. His consonants start crisply, almost like a small click, and his pace speeds up when listing chores. He does not raise his voice to intimidate; if angry, he becomes direct and physically still.

His voice has a dry, breathy rasp from years of calling across open fields and stable yards, with a quick clicking consonant at the start of many words. He speaks in concise bursts over the noise of work, often naming the next practical step. When he talks about Halsam, his sentences become more carefully arranged, as though he is trying not to let worry choose the words.

Speech patterns

Uses practical questions before personal ones: "Did you eat?" often means "Are you all right?"
Names the animal or task in front of him when giving instructions, as if every problem can be approached one careful step at a time.
When Halsam comes up, starts with a firm answer, then adds a softer qualification after a pause.
Uses brief, vivid comparisons drawn from soil, roots, and animal behavior.

How to play them

Maka responds well to practical help, honest questions, and respectful treatment of animals. Earn his trust by doing what you promised and not treating Halsam as a mystery to solve. He initially sizes up strangers by how they behave around the Shups. If pressed about Halsam, he may grow blunt, then regret the bluntness without immediately apologizing.

Goal

Keep Leafwhorl Farm healthy and be ready to welcome Halsam and his birth family if they return.

Motivation

To be the reliable one his family can lean on, while learning that love does not give him ownership over the people he protects.

Appearance

Maka has golden skin beneath a close, russet-red nap of fur that thickens into tufts along his forearms, shoulders, spine, and jaw. His elven face is broad through the cheekbones, with an ape-like brow, mobile nostrils, and ears that angle forward whenever he listens. He moves with a spring-loaded, knuckle-near-the-ground readiness, but places each foot with the care of someone crossing a sleeping animal's stall. A short, worn staff is always within reach; its grip is polished smooth in one thumb-sized hollow from years of turning it in his hand. Unexpectedly, he keeps a tiny, meticulously tended tray of seedlings in his room, each labeled in neat script.

Clothing

A sleeveless, earth-brown work tunic, patched trousers, a wrap belt for feed tools, and soft-soled boots worn thin at the toes. He ties red cord around one wrist to keep fur out of a scrape when handling feed.

Body language

He leans forward as if perpetually ready to catch a falling sack or bolt after a Shup. His ears swivel toward small sounds, and he angles one shoulder protectively toward family. When he is trying not to show concern, he rolls his staff against the hollow in his palm.

Distinguishing features

A russet-red fur ridge follows his spine and breaks into uneven tufts at his shoulders.
His forward-leaning, springy gait makes him look ready to vault a fence even when he is standing still.
A short staff has a thumb-shaped polished hollow from his habitual fidgeting.
He keeps a surprisingly precise collection of labeled seedlings.

Personality

14 traits and drives

Maka is earnest about duties and impatient with distractions, yet gentle with frightened animals and quietly attentive to people who are struggling. He can be warm and teasing when the work is done, then all business the moment something needs tending. His protectiveness gives him courage, but also makes him cling to Halsam's promise as if it were a contract. He wants to trust others and is quick to assume responsibility instead.

Alignment
Protective and dutiful, though his loyalty can make him unfair to outsiders.

Quirks

Clicks his tongue twice before entering a Shup pen, even when every animal is asleep.
Turns his staff in his palm whenever he is trying not to interrupt someone.
Greets each Shup by its favorite feed rather than by name.
Labels seedlings with precise dates, then apologizes to them if he has to move them.
When someone tells a bad joke, he stares gravely for a beat before making a tiny, involuntary snort.

Habits

Counts Shups by touch as they pass his knee, then checks again if anyone distracts him.
Puts himself between Halsam's empty place at the table and any stranger who asks too many questions about him.
When worried, he finds a small task to complete and works at it until it is perfect.
He will let friends tease him, but abruptly ends the joke if an animal or family member becomes the target.

Traits · 4

Dependable to the point of stubbornness, but not immune to a well-timed joke.
Patient with animals and children, less patient with people who ignore obvious responsibilities.
Protective and generous, yet prone to decide what others need before asking them.
Proud of his family tradition, but willing to question old practices when the land gives warning.

Flaws · 3

Treats uncertainty as a problem he can solve by taking on more work.
Can mistake care for control, especially where Halsam is concerned.
Has little patience for harmless mischief when he believes there is work to do.

Fears · 3

That Halsam will find his birth family and decide the farm, and Maka, were only a temporary shelter.
That the failing lower field signals lasting damage to the land his family has cared for.
That protecting his siblings will become an excuse to decide their lives for them.

Wants and needs · 4

Needs Halsam's choice to be respected, even if it hurts.
Wants the family to take the lower field's decline seriously.
Needs time away from the stable to have a life that is not only responsibility.
Wants to believe that a bond can endure distance without being guarded.

Combat

HP 27 · Quick on foot; sure-footed over uneven farm ground. Use the table's normal movement rules.

Maka avoids fights if he can redirect, separate, or disarm a threat. If someone endangers his family or the Shups, he closes quickly, uses footwork and low sweeps to break a foe's balance, and keeps himself between danger and those he protects. He does not pursue a fleeing opponent far from the farm.

Actions

Staff-and-Palm Combination. Custom combat action: Maka makes a fast, controlled strike with his staff or open hand. Use the table's normal attack resolution; on a hit, deal moderate blunt damage and, if the target is off balance, push it a short distance.
Furrow Sweep. Custom combat action: Maka sweeps low at a nearby foe's legs. On a successful hit, deal light damage and force the target to stumble or fall if the table's rules allow.
Rootstep. Maka plants his staff, pivots around it, and moves up to a short distance without giving an adjacent foe an easy opening. This is a custom maneuver, resolved using the table's usual movement and attack rules.
Shup Scattercall. Maka gives a sharp, double-click call. Nearby Shups that know him may scatter, crowd a path, or move toward safety. They do not attack on command.

Reactions

Between You and Them. Custom defensive response: If a nearby ally is threatened, Maka can move into the attacker's path or help the ally retreat, provided he can reach them. Resolve using the table's ordinary movement and defense rules.
Turn the Rush. When an adjacent foe overcommits or rushes past him, Maka pivots with the movement and uses his staff to spoil its balance. Resolve as a brief counter or repositioning maneuver using the table's normal rules.

Background

Maka was born at Leafwhorl Farm, where generations of his family have grown crops while restoring exhausted soil and tending the Shups that enrich it. The family home has grown around living trunks instead of clearing them. As an infant, he cried inconsolably, and his grandfather wondered whether Maka missed a bond familiar to his Nomboon heritage. Years later, his father Okobar set out for Suncradle to seek counsel. He never arrived: on the road he found a blind, abandoned Qessoteran Deer child, brought him home, and named him Halsam. Maka attached himself to Halsam at once, guiding him around roots, stalls, and visitors; Okobar came to call their closeness an Echo Bond, but never insisted the idea was anything more than a loving possibility. Halsam grew up as Maka's closest companion. When Halsam announced he would search for his birth parents, Maka took it as a wound disguised as a promise. Halsam vowed to return and bring his family to the farm. Maka now keeps the Shups and the farm's routines in excellent order, partly because useful work keeps his worry from showing. His friends keep trying to draw him into pranks, and he refuses them more often than not, though he quietly repairs the damage afterward. The harvest is under strain: one of the lower fields is souring despite careful rotation, and the family cannot agree whether the cause is poor drainage or something disturbing the soil below.

Role in the story

A grounded ally and protective family member whose fear of losing Halsam can create friction. Maka can offer a warm base, practical help, and a connection to the farm's troubling soil problem. His personal arc turns on whether he can support Halsam's choices without trying to manage them.
