Inquisitor Malric Al-Roshosh
Inquisitor Malric Al-Roshosh
At the table
Voice
A dry, lightly rasped speaking voice shaped by years of reading brittle documents aloud and questioning people in echoing courtrooms. He places consonants carefully and gives each answer room to settle. When startled, he makes a faint breathy click between words, then resumes as if nothing happened.
His voice has the dry rasp of someone who has spent years reading testimony aloud in dusty rooms, with a slight catch on legal phrases learned from his first clerkship. His questions are clearly articulated and paced like entries in a record. When surprised, a soft breathy click slips between words, a habit left from silently counting lines while reading.
Speech patterns
How to play them
Malric offers a calm hearing before threats or bargains. He is unusually receptive to evidence that contradicts his assumptions and will protect a witness who can substantiate a claim. If challenged with emotion alone, he asks for a specific detail; if shown a concrete contradiction, he visibly reconsiders. He can be persuaded to bend procedure, but not to falsify a record.
Goal
Determine who is manufacturing the impossible confessions, uncover the truth about his patron's influence, and prevent the order from condemning another innocent person.
Motivation
To make truth harder to bury than it was when he was a powerless clerk, while resisting the temptation to let his patron decide what deserves to be uncovered.
Appearance
Malric has the compact, deliberate bearing of a man accustomed to standing still while others explain themselves. His sun-browned skin is fine-lined around the mouth, and his close-cropped hair has gone iron-gray at the temples. He wears a heavy brass astrolabe on a cord beneath his coat; its thumb-ring has been polished bright while the rest is dulled nearly black. His hands are broad and ink-stained, with flattened fingertips from years of turning brittle pages and pressing seals. He moves with measured economy, as if every gesture should be entered into evidence. The unexpected sight is the tiny, neatly mended patch on one sleeve: bright yellow thread in a careful pattern of little birds, a repair made by his daughter and preserved despite the severe cut of his uniform.
Clothing
A charcoal wool coat with the Order's small unblinking-eye seal stitched inside the lapel, a high-collared linen shirt, plain riding boots, and a leather document harness. His sleeve bears a tiny yellow repair in the shape of birds.
Body language
He stands with his hands folded over the astrolabe cord, thumb rubbing its polished ring. When someone lies, he does not glare; he turns his head a fraction, like a listener trying to locate a faint sound. Under genuine grief, his formal posture collapses and he reaches for the yellow-stitched sleeve.

Personality
14 traits and drivesMalric is patient enough to let a frightened witness stumble through a whole account, yet ruthless about exposing a deliberate lie. He can be unexpectedly tender with children and old people, but turns procedural and exacting when he feels personally accused. He despises theatrical cruelty, though he sometimes uses unnerving silences and carefully chosen truths to corner a suspect. He wants to believe people can change, but struggles to extend that belief to himself.

Background
Malric Al-Roshosh was once a provincial court clerk, prized for remembering every witness's phrasing and distrusted for asking what a witness had left unsaid. During the famine hearings at Bellweather Ford, he helped convict a miller who had supposedly sold grain to raiders. The miller died in custody. Months later, Malric found the original testimony in a misfiled bundle: the accusation had been altered by a magistrate to conceal that the magistrate's own stores had been emptied. Malric exposed the fraud, but the court dismissed him and the miller's family refused his apology. He accepted a place in the Order of the Unblinking Eye, believing its scrutiny could prevent another convenient lie from becoming a death sentence. In a sealed archive beneath the order's courthouse, he found a brass astrolabe that showed not stars but shifting points of attention. Its unseen intelligence answered his questions in fragments, and Malric made a pact with it in exchange for the means to uncover concealed testimony. He tells himself he serves the order, not the thing behind the instrument. His former clerk, Edevan, now manages the archive and quietly passes him documents that official channels bury. Malric's daughter, Isabet, lives with her other parent in the riverside town of Silt-and-Supper, a name left over from two feuding hamlets forced to share a ferry. She resents that he sends money and letters but rarely visits. Now a string of confessions has appeared in which the accused describe crimes they could not possibly know about. The order wants swift convictions. Malric suspects the astrolabe is listening through the confessions, and the next name in its margin is his own.
Role in the story
A formidable investigator who can serve as an uneasy ally, a procedural antagonist, or a patron seeking help with a case that implicates his own order. His need for evidence gives players room to persuade him, while his pact creates a danger he may not fully understand.

- Faction
- Inquisitor of the Order of the Unblinking Eye. His pact is with an unnamed Great Old One that communicates through the brass astrolabe.
