Okobar Leafwhorl
Okobar Leafwhorl
At the table
Voice
His voice has a warm, slightly rough edge from years of calling across open fields and speaking through dust and dry wind. It carries easily without sounding loud, with a grounded, breathy resonance that suits his broad chest. A trace of gravel catches on words he uses often, especially the names of tools and crops.
He speaks in measured, practical sentences shaped by years of calling over wind and livestock. His vocabulary is rich in farming terms, but he explains them plainly when needed. He often begins with a question and leaves a short pause for the other person to answer. When discussing family, his phrasing becomes more personal and less certain; he avoids presenting the Echo Bond as fact.
Speech patterns
How to play them
Begin with practical hospitality: offer water, food, or a place to sit, then ask what brought the visitors to Hearthroot. He warms quickly to people who respect the farm, the children, and the land. If someone speaks about Halsam or Baxari as curiosities, he becomes firm and asks them to address the family as people. He can be persuaded by evidence, patience, and a plan that shares the burden rather than shifting it onto Xenalyn or the children.
Goal
Keep Leafwhorl Farm productive without exhausting the land, while giving each of his children the freedom to become more than the unusual circumstances of their birth or adoption.
Motivation
To leave Hearthroot healthier than he found it and to keep his household close without making love feel like a duty.
Appearance
Okobar is a broad, ape-humanoid man with a quiet, forward-leaning posture, as if listening for something moving beneath the fields. When he waits, he rests most of his weight on his right heel and keeps his left hand open at his side. His russet-brown coat is thick along his shoulders and forearms, with pale flecks of chaff often caught in it. His face is heavy-browed and expressive, his muzzle framed by a short, wiry beard, and his amber-brown eyes hold a patient, searching focus. He moves with surprising softness for his size, placing his feet carefully even on loose gravel. The unexpected detail is that he keeps a tiny, bright yellow child's kite tucked into his work sash, patched at one corner and much too small to fly well.
Clothing
A sun-faded green work vest over a collarless linen shirt, patched trousers, and a broad sash holding seed packets, twine, and small tools. His boots are scuffed smooth at the toes from walking fields. He wears a plain wooden clasp carved with the Leafwhorl family mark.
Body language
He stands with his shoulders slightly forward and his weight settled on his right heel. His broad hands are rarely still: one may turn a seed, test a tool's balance, or brush crumbs from a table. He gives people space to approach rather than looming over them, but when a child or animal is at risk his posture becomes suddenly square and immovable.

Distinguishing features
Personality
13 traits and drivesOkobar is hospitable without being easy to sway: he will feed a stranger before asking their business, then ask pointed questions once everyone has eaten. He is patient with children and animals, but has little patience for people who treat the land as an inexhaustible resource. He takes pride in knowing the farm intimately, yet privately worries that pride has made him slow to accept new methods. In a calm mood he tells long, dryly funny stories; under pressure he becomes concise and physically protective, then later regrets how little he explained.
- Alignment
- Steadfastly protective; favors practical cooperation over abstract law, but will break a rule rather than abandon someone in need.

HP 44 · Normal walking pace; moves with deliberate, sure-footed stepsOkobar prefers to protect people and control the ground rather than pursue enemies. He uses his hoe to keep attackers at a distance, calls Shups to disrupt a charge when safe, and uses custom root-and-vine druidry to block routes or create time for others to escape. He avoids fighting near the children, the granary, or the living trees.

Background
Okobar was born into the Leafwhorl family, whose inheritance is not simply land but the duty of keeping Hearthroot's soil alive. Generations before him learned to use Shups to till and enrich fields worn thin by repeated planting. The family home grew around great trees rather than cutting them down, and Okobar learned early that a good harvest begins with noticing what the land can bear. He became a druid as much through patient observation as formal study, learning to read roots, rainless earth, and the behavior of animals. When his and Xenalyn's first child, Maka, was inconsolable, Okobar's father suggested that the partly Nomboon child might be missing a bond familiar to their people. Okobar carried that uncertainty for years. On a journey to Suncradle to ask his family for counsel, he found a lone, crying Qessoteran Deer child, blind and in need of help. He never reached Suncradle. He brought the child home, and Xenalyn and he named him Halsam. Maka stayed beside Halsam constantly, becoming his guide and closest companion. Okobar came to think of their attachment as an Echo Bond, though he treats the idea as a tender possibility rather than a doctrine. Later, Baxari was born a Quadian Hydra beneath a celestial alignment, forcing the family to face the attention and questions that came with a child whose nature was unusual even by their standards. Okobar and Xenalyn now raise Maka, Halsam, Baxari, and Rynalynn while maintaining Leafwhorl Farm as a working home and a center for restoring tired soil across Hearthroot. Their current problem is that several neighboring plots are failing faster than their old rotation methods can mend them, and the family cannot agree how much land to leave fallow without risking the farm's livelihood.
Role in the story
A grounded ally, local guide, and moral counterweight whose farm can become a refuge or a threatened objective. His family story offers the party a personal connection to the mysteries of bonds, unusual births, and belonging, while the struggling fields provide an immediate problem the characters can help solve.
