Voice

Their voice sounds dry and faintly rasped, shaped by dome-filtered air and disciplined breath. It carries a small catch on words with hard consonants, as if their throat remembers heat. Excitement speeds their questions; anger makes their phrasing clipped and decisive rather than softer.

Seraph's voice has a dry, slightly rasped edge from years spent speaking through dome-filtered air and practicing controlled breath. They articulate carefully, as though each word has weight, but excitement makes their thoughts tumble into quick questions. Their voice does not soften when angry; it becomes more sharply paced, with each sentence delivered like a decision already tested.

Speech patterns

Asks what a person needs before asking what they have done.
Uses concrete sensory details when describing visions, then carefully distinguishes what they saw from what they think it means.
When anxious, strings together questions and answers themself; when resolved, speaks in short, direct statements.
Uses the phrase "That is one possible morning" to remind themself and others that a vision is not destiny.

How to play them

Meet Seraph with a practical question or an honest admission rather than a grand claim about destiny. Give them room to choose how close to stand. They respond to compassion that respects their agency, and distrust flattery that calls them chosen. If players bring news of Vey Talor, Naia, or the imperial debate, Seraph listens closely but asks who else might be endangered by acting on it.

Goal

Determine whether the Sunline Reweaving is real, and help shape what follows without becoming an instrument of empire or prophecy.

Motivation

Seraph wants intimate human connection without making other people pay for the danger of their power. Curiosity draws them toward the strange pattern of their birth; empathy keeps pulling them toward immediate suffering, even when investigating the pattern would be safer.

Appearance

Seraph has the long, fine-boned proportions of an elf, but their presence feels more like standing beside a kiln than meeting a temple ascetic. Their copper-red hair is cropped unevenly at the jaw and usually smells faintly of singed cedar. Gold eyes keep tracking exits, hands, and the faces of people who are being ignored; they rarely meet a powerful person's gaze for long. In repose their skin is warm and matte, like sun-baked clay. Strong emotion turns it ember-bright beneath the surface, and, when overwhelm breaks through, fine tongues of flame crawl over their shoulders and forearms. They wait with one heel lifted and their weight pitched forward, as if ready to catch someone who has not yet fallen. Unexpectedly, they carry a child's wooden counting toy, carefully repaired with tiny copper pins.

Clothing

Layered charcoal wraps with loose sleeves that can be pulled over the hands, a cream inner sash marked with small heat-blurred sun symbols, and sandals with thick insulating soles. The fabric is treated against sparks but is visibly patched rather than ceremonial.

Body language

They wait forward on the balls of their feet, keeping their hands open and visible. Their gaze scans the room for who is excluded or frightened, rather than settling on the person with the highest status. When embarrassed, they rub a thumb over the copper pins in their wooden toy; when overwhelmed, their shoulders draw inward even as the glow under their skin grows brighter.

Distinguishing features

Their skin shifts from warm clay tones to a visible ember glow when emotion overwhelms their practiced calm.
They habitually watch the least-heard person in a room rather than its apparent leader.
They carry a small wooden counting toy, a tender, conspicuously childlike possession for a feared solar portent.

Personality

13 traits and drives

Seraph is intensely curious and emotionally porous, quick to notice loneliness and slow to accept comfort for themself. They can be warm, funny, and eager for ordinary company when they feel safe; under scrutiny, they become watchful and formal. Their empathy can turn into stubborn protectiveness, while their fear of harming others makes them retreat just when honesty and closeness matter most.

Alignment
Compassionate, but willing to defy authority when lives are at stake

Quirks

Counts doorways and exits in groups of five, then starts again if anyone joins or leaves.
Sets a cup of water beside an open flame, even when the fire is too small to need tending.
Touches the copper pins on their wooden toy whenever someone says the word "destiny."
Turns a chair or cushion slightly toward whoever has not spoken yet.
After a vision, asks someone nearby to name three ordinary things they can see.

Habits

When someone is distressed, Seraph notices before most people do and offers practical help before asking what happened.
They leave extra space around themselves in crowded rooms, then step into danger without hesitation if another person is threatened.
After a vision, they test small details in the present before trusting any conclusion.
They seek out ordinary company when calm, but retreat to open, unoccupied places when their skin begins to glow.

Can become recklessly protective when someone is isolated or dismissed.
Overinterprets visions when tired and struggles to admit when fear, not foresight, is guiding them.

Fears · 3

Burning someone they love during an involuntary flare.
Being reduced to a prophecy, imperial symbol, or research subject.
Discovering that a vision led them to cause the very harm they hoped to prevent.

A way to control their emotional flares without making isolation the price of safety.
The truth about their mother's death and Vey Talor's choices in raising them.
Friends who will challenge them without treating them as a prophecy.
A chance to learn whether the visions can be understood without being obeyed.

Combat

HP 65 · 30 feet per round, custom baseline movement for this profile

Seraph tries to end violence without killing: they redirect attacks, disable weapons, and create a path for bystanders to escape. They avoid grappling because emotional surges can ignite their skin. If an ally is cornered or a foe threatens civilians, they stop holding back and use Cinder Palm to force distance. A vision may make them hesitate, but they do not mistake it for certainty.

Custom Generic Fantasy rules. for uncertain checks, roll a d20 and add the relevant rating below; 15 is a routine challenge, 20 is difficult, and 25 is exceptional. Seraph's attacks deal the listed damage on a hit against a defense set by the GM.
Emberwake. when strongly overwhelmed, Seraph's skin glows red-hot and flames wreath their body. Nearby creatures risk burns only if they touch Seraph or remain within arm's reach for a full round.
Possible-Future Flash. once per scene, the GM may give Seraph a brief, uncertain glimpse of one plausible immediate future. It is a clue, not certainty, and may be changed by later choices.

Actions

Sunstep Combination. Custom action: make a Grace check against the target's defense. On a hit, deal 10 bludgeoning damage. Seraph may make a second strike against a different nearby target, dealing 6 damage on a hit.
Cinder Palm. Custom action: Seraph releases a short arc of flame at one target within 30 feet. Make an Insight check against the target's defense; on a hit, deal 12 fire damage. The target's clothing or a small unattended object may also catch fire.
Stillpoint Breath. Custom action: Seraph spends a turn centering themself and takes no offensive action. Regain 12 hit points and end one ongoing fear or confusion effect, if the GM uses such effects. This cannot be used while restrained.

Reactions

Interposed Step. Custom reaction: when a creature Seraph can reach is hit by an attack, Seraph may move beside that creature and attempt to redirect the blow. Make a Grace check against the attacker's result; on success, the protected creature takes half damage, rounded down. Seraph takes the remainder.
Flash of the Near Future. Custom reaction: once per scene, when an imminent threat becomes clear, Seraph may call out a fragment from a possible future. One ally who can hear them may immediately move a short distance to cover or away from the threat. The fragment is not proof the danger will happen.

Services they sell

Monastic instruction in balance, breath, and nonlethal defense.
Aid in evacuating people from dangerous places.
A firsthand account of prophetic flashes and the political arguments surrounding the Solar Avatar.

A careful account of a possible future, with the caveat that Seraph cannot guarantee its outcome.
Training in breath, balance, and controlled movement from Seraph's monastic practice.
A lead to Naia's research on the Dual Crown Theory or to Vey Talor's whereabouts.

Background

Seraph was born during the longest solar day in four hundred years, beneath a moonless Perma Day sky. At the Firebend Convergence, the sun appeared as twin reflections in a heat-vented sky channel. Their mother, a Luminash sun acolyte, died in childbirth when the Temple of Emberfall relit in a spontaneous solar flare. High Flamekeeper Vey Talor took the infant in and raised them inside a reflective dome chamber, believing the enclosure would prevent their involuntary fires from hurting anyone. It kept people safe, but also taught Seraph that closeness was a hazard to be managed. As a young adult, Seraph left the dome to train as a monk, learning breath, balance, and precise movement as ways to live among others without fearing every touch. They are now level 13 by the custom rules used in this profile, a measure of exceptional experience rather than a claim about a canonical Generic Fantasy progression system. Their visions arrive as fragments of possible futures: a familiar face beneath unfamiliar ash, a door opened by the wrong hand, a city seen from the sky. They cannot reliably tell warning from temptation. Their birth has become a political and cosmic argument. Mandate Empire priests dispute whether a Solar Avatar blesses the Emperor or threatens his claim to embody the Five Flames. Naga scholar Naia noticed that Seraph's solar resonance partly mirrors the lunar resonance recorded at Chroman's birth, prompting the Dual Crown Theory. Zareth, Anya's brother, treats Seraph as a variable in prophecy engineering and calls them the flame that may burn the world clean. Dawnstead scholars fear the Sunline Reweaving may mean the Avatar cycle itself is changing. Meanwhile, off-world solar exploitation and Dreamroot surges make Seraph's visions more frequent and less coherent. Seraph wants to find Vey Talor again, protect the people caught between prophecy and empire, and discover whether their power can be chosen rather than merely endured.

Role in the story

A compassionate, dangerous ally caught between lived relationships and forces that want to turn them into an omen. Seraph can help the party interpret cosmic changes, challenge imperial claims, or become the center of a conflict over whether prophecy describes the future or manufactures it.

From their background
Faction
Formerly sheltered by Emberfall's sun acolytes; watched with interest by Mandate Empire priests and Dawnstead scholars. Seraph has sworn allegiance to none of them.

Known connections

High Flamekeeper Vey Talor raised Seraph in the reflective dome. Vey's protection saved lives but left Seraph unsure whether they were loved as a person or guarded as a portent.
Their mother was a Luminash sun acolyte who died during the flare at Emberfall's relighting. Seraph knows her through temple accounts and a handful of preserved prayers.
Naia, a naga scholar, recorded the resonance parallel between Seraph's birth and Chroman's. She wants Seraph's cooperation, though her research could expose them to imperial scrutiny.
Zareth, Anya's brother, studies Seraph as a counterweight in prophecy engineering. He may offer useful information while treating their choices as pieces on a board.
Mandate Empire priests are divided over whether Seraph's existence supports or undermines the Emperor's claim to embody the Five Flames.
