Dain Kest
Dain Kest
At the table
Voice
A dry, road-worn voice with a slight rasp from cold mornings and calling commands across horse lines. His words carry a steady, clipped rhythm, as though he is used to being understood through rain and armor. The texture is rough rather than booming, and a faint breathy catch appears when he tries to say Jarek's name.
His sentences are compact and practical, shaped by years of giving directions over hoofbeats and wind. He favors plain terms, pauses to choose exact words when discussing orders, and sometimes uses stable and road imagery without noticing. He rarely raises his voice; when angered, he becomes more direct and starts naming the consequences he thinks others are avoiding.
Speech patterns
How to play them
Dain is cautious but not hostile. He responds well to practical plans, proof that a person has considered consequences, and direct questions about what he is ordered to do. He is wary of flattery and tests strangers by asking what they will do for the people affected by their plans. If players offer a workable alternative to harsh collection, he may help them present it to the baron's steward.
Goal
Find a way to reduce or postpone the arrears owed by his sister's village without openly defying Baron Edric or endangering his household companions.
Motivation
He believes service is only honorable when it protects real people, but he also needs his wages and status to keep his family safe.
Appearance
Dain is a weathered man with a square, wind-reddened face and skin roughened by years of rain, saddle grit, and mail rubbed beneath his collar. His dark hair is cut short at the sides and usually flattened by his coif. He stands as if braced against a horse's movement, feet planted wide, yet turns with surprising care around children and skittish animals. His most noticeable possession is a small wooden whistle tied to his belt; its mouthpiece has been worn smooth and pale from constant handling. He smells faintly of damp wool, leather grease, and horse.
Clothing
A knee-length wool surcoat bearing the baron's black three-pronged gate emblem on a cream field, worn over a mail hauberk and padded gambeson. A coif covers his head beneath a practical iron kettle hat with a broad brim. For formal musters he wears a great helm, but carries it rather than wearing it on patrol because it narrows his sight. His belt holds a sword, knife, and plain leather pouch.
Body language
He keeps his shoulders square and his shield-side arm slightly forward, even out of armor. When uneasy, he shifts his weight as though testing the firmness of ground. He looks directly at whoever is speaking, but glances toward the nearest exit whenever the baron's name is mentioned.

Distinguishing features
Personality
12 traits and drivesDain is dutiful in public and stubbornly compassionate in private. On patrol he is disciplined, observant, and sparing with words; with frightened villagers he becomes patient and unexpectedly gentle. When he feels cornered by a superior, he turns dry and literal, obeying the exact wording of an order while resisting its cruelty. He wants to be trusted, yet treats praise from nobles as a warning that someone will soon ask him to do something shameful.

Combat
AC 18 · HP 44 · 30 feetDain fights as a trained household man-at-arms, not a tournament champion. He keeps his shield between himself and the most dangerous foe, uses the reach of a formation to hold a narrow lane, and attacks exposed openings with measured sword cuts. He saves Action Surge for a sudden breach or a foe threatening someone behind him. He uses Shielded Advance to shove an enemy away from a vulnerable ally, and retreats in good order if his companions are overwhelmed.

Possessions
Background
Dain was born to a tenant family on Baron Edric's lands, where his father repaired carts and his mother kept the estate's poultry. At seventeen he entered the baron's household as a mounted servant, learning to care for horses before learning to fight. During a winter escort, a bridge plank gave way beneath the column. Dain's closest friend, Jarek, was swept into the swollen stream while the other riders hurried to protect the baron's baggage. Dain disobeyed his sergeant, went back, and hauled Jarek out, but lost the whistle Jarek had carved for him in the flood. The surviving men mocked his disobedience; the baron quietly promoted him for saving a valuable retainer. That contradiction taught Dain to distrust praise from above and measure honor by who gets left behind. He later carved a replacement whistle and has worn it smooth. Now a seasoned man-at-arms, he is tasked with collecting arrears from villages after a poor harvest. His sister, Katka, lives among those villagers, and his orders put duty against family. His old companion Jarek, now a sergeant, urges him to obey without sentiment.
Role in the story
A capable soldier caught between his sworn duty and the people that duty is meant to protect. He can become a guarded ally, a reluctant obstacle during rent collection, or the witness whose altered tally exposes the baron's household's neglect.
