Vellit
Vellit
At the table
“the tall place”
Voice
Vellit's voice has a dry, slightly breathy rasp from spending time in dusty lofts with their grandfather. They speak with a quick, clipped rhythm when anxious, as if trying to get the important part out before someone interrupts. Their name is usually said with an unexpected stress on the first syllable.
Vellit speaks in short, direct sentences and gives precise descriptions of sounds, smells, and small movements. When nervous, they restart a sentence from the beginning. They use adult harvest terms picked up from listening to their family, sometimes in the wrong context.
Speech patterns
How to play them
Approach Vellit gently, speak plainly, and let them choose where to sit. They respond best when adults take their fear seriously without treating them as helpless. Asking about the straw twists may prompt an honest account; demanding they enter the field will make them shut down or bolt.
Goal
Convince the adults to search the field before the next harvest night, and find out what happened to their cousin.
Motivation
Vellit wants the grown-ups to stop calling the disappearances accidents and to bring their cousin home.
Appearance
Vellit is a small halfling child with a round, wind-chapped face and a solemn expression that keeps breaking into sudden, lopsided grins. They walk with their toes turned slightly inward, but when sleepwalking they move in a straight, steady line without stumbling. Their hands are unusually busy: thumbs worrying the seams of their sleeves, fingertips picking at straw, palms opening and closing as if testing invisible knots. People notice the tiny straw twists they leave behind before they notice how frightened they are.
Clothing
A mended russet tunic beneath an oversized wool vest, patched trousers, and boots with straw stuck in the seams. Their mother's blue scarf is wrapped twice around their neck even indoors.
Body language
Awake, Vellit hunches their shoulders and rubs their palms together, making small, fidgeting movements. When listening closely, they become still except for their toes, which tap out an uneven pattern. During sleepwalking, their shoulders relax and their hands hang open; they move with a calm purpose that looks nothing like their daytime skittishness.

Background
Vellit lives with their mother, Delya, a thatcher who keeps the village roofs dry, and their grandfather, Odran, who taught them how to tell wheat from barley by touch. Three weeks ago, Vellit's older cousin disappeared after slipping past the last fence into the uncut field. The adults said the child had run away, but Vellit heard the harvest bell ring from the field long after it had been taken down. Since then, Vellit has begun sleepwalking toward the wheat and leaving little twists of straw on doorsteps. Their mother ties a soft cord around their wrist at night, but twice it has been found neatly untied. Vellit wants the village to stop pretending nothing is wrong and to find their cousin. They are scared of the field, honest even when honesty gets them in trouble, and ashamed that part of them wants to know what is calling.
