At the table

Voice

Clear and dry-edged, with breath control from dance training and a market-call carry that can cut across a crowded aisle. Their cadence is brisk when selling, deliberate when weighing a risk, and warmer with people they have chosen to trust.

Their voice has a dry, clear edge shaped by long hours pitching over market noise and by the breath control of a dancer. They clip the ends of sentences when dealing with customers, then let vowels stretch when describing a piece's supposed history. Their Ryl becomes quicker when speaking with Seli.

Speech patterns

Starts sales pitches with a precise observation about what a customer is actually looking at.
Uses short, concrete questions when testing whether someone is safe.
Calls dangerous plans 'expensive ideas' and asks who pays if they fail.
Uses humor to disguise warnings, often mentioning the quality or imagined history of a piece of jewelry.

How to play them

Treat them as a wary vendor, not an exposition source. Respectful customers get candid advice and fair prices; anyone who treats the shackle as a joke or assumes they are helpless gets a polished sales pitch and very little truth. A concrete offer of help for Seli earns more trust than promises of rescue.

Goal

Get Seli and themself out of the market district without trading another person's freedom for their own.

Motivation

Freedom means being able to choose who they protect. Gavi wants that choice for themself and Seli, and distrusts any victory that requires leaving someone else behind.

Secret · GM only

Appearance

Gavi sits sideways on a narrow stool behind a cramped jewelry stall, leaning forward as though ready to spring up before a customer finishes speaking. Their sapphire-blue skin has a satin sheen under the amber lantern, with darker blue stippling along the temples and shoulders. Their compact, conditioned frame is built for balance: narrow shoulders, a steady core, and strong calves. Deep indigo lekku, black-violet at the roots, drape over one shoulder; tiny brass rings on the right one click softly when they turn. Their calm face is watchful, amber eyes flecked with copper, and small brass piercings trace one ear. Their legs stretch across the stall's low ledge, the soles of their worn sandals facing the aisle. A heavy shackle circles the left ankle, its short chain vanishing behind a display chest. Unexpectedly, they keep a childishly cheerful collection of tiny painted wooden birds tucked among the expensive jewelry.

Clothing

Layered sapphire performance wraps over a fitted, opaque underlayer, arranged for movement rather than display. Brass clasps secure the fabrics; an ornate carved collar, armbands, stacked bangles, thigh ornaments, and calf bands give the ensemble a vendor's theatrical polish. One wrap is a little too long and has been repeatedly repaired with mismatched blue thread. Their left ankle shackle is heavy, plainly functional, and chained out of sight behind the stall.

Body language

They put their weight on the balls of their feet even while seated, leaving the hips angled toward the nearest gap. Their shoulders look relaxed but their lekku make small, deliberate turns toward nearby voices. When negotiating, they tap a clasp against the stall twice before answering.

Personality

12 traits and drives

Gavi can be disarmingly practical and generous with small kindnesses, yet suspicious of broad promises. With customers they are composed, quick to spot a want, and willing to tease. With frightened people they become steady and directive. When angry, they do not withdraw; they bargain harder, state the cost plainly, and make eye contact until the other person answers.

Alignment
Pragmatic and compassionate, with a fierce preference for choosing their own obligations.

Quirks

Turns any loose bead into a tiny spinning top while waiting.
Names the wooden birds after foods they have never tasted.
Taps a clasp twice against the stall before answering a difficult question.
Counts customers by their footsteps and is annoyed when two people walk in perfect time.
Rearranges jewelry by how loudly it would clatter if someone ran.

Habits

Tracks hands and exits while appearing absorbed in the jewelry.
Offers a genuine bargain to anyone who treats the other vendors decently.
When frightened, becomes unusually practical and starts assigning small tasks.
After a close call, repaints one of the little wooden birds.

Traits · 3

Reads people quickly but doubts their own favorable impressions.
Protective of vulnerable strangers, though they resent being expected to save everyone.
Can be playful about trinkets and theatrical salesmanship, then abruptly serious about consent and risk.

Flaws · 3

Assumes every generous offer conceals a price.
Will risk their own safety to keep a promise, even when a safer compromise exists.
Hides distress behind sharp bargaining and can alienate people who might help.

Fears · 3

Being moved before Seli can escape.
A rescue attempt that leaves someone else in chains.
Mistaking an exploiter's performance of kindness for genuine help.

Wants and needs · 3

A safe way to free the ankle shackle.
Proof that Seli will be included in any escape plan.
A reliable ally who accepts that Gavi makes the final choice.

Combat

HP 10 · Custom profile: normal walking pace when unencumbered; the ankle shackle impedes running. Use the chosen edition's movement rules.

Avoids a stand-up fight. Uses the stall, hanging fabrics, and tight market lanes as cover, fires only to create an opening, and tries to get bystanders out of danger. If cornered, targets a weapon hand or knees, then runs. Their ankle shackle limits long strides and makes a prolonged chase dangerous.

Background

Gavi was born on Ryloth and taken from their family as a child during a debt seizure by a private slaver, then sold through several hands before ending up in the port markets of Taris. They learned to dance first as a way to keep an audience looking at the stage instead of at the exits; later, they used that same timing to notice who watched guards, who carried a weapon, and who might be willing to help. A formative turning point came when a buyer offered to purchase their freedom but intended to separate them from a younger Twi'lek named Seli. Gavi refused the deal and was beaten for it. Since then, they have treated every promise as a bargain that must be examined for its hidden cost. Their current owner makes them sell jewelry from a stall, where Gavi quietly builds a network of customers and keeps a record of safe routes out of the district. They still exchange signals with Seli, now a kitchen worker at a nearby cantina, and rely on an aging human repairer, Osha, who hides messages inside repaired clasps. The immediate problem: their owner plans to move them and Seli before the next market cycle.

Role in the story

A constrained but resourceful ally, information broker, or rescue objective. Gavi's choices and plans continue whether the party intervenes or not; their central conflict is how to escape without sacrificing Seli or the other captives.

Veyashi, a regular customer and former stage musician, gives Gavi news from other districts but has not yet risked open rebellion.
