Wulger Marshstep
Wulger Marshstep
At the table
“and a cautious plan”
Voice
A dry, breath-led voice with a faint rasp from salt air and years of calling across water. Before speaking, he takes a short nasal intake that sounds almost like a sniff. His words carry cleanly over distance, with the hard, measured cadence of someone used to giving instructions while moving.
His speech is economical and practical, shaped by years of shouting directions over surf and wind. He clips the ends of sentences and gives track descriptions in sharp bursts, as if each word must carry across a beach. When lying, he adds unnecessary detail about weather or equipment and leaves people out of the account.
Speech patterns
How to play them
Wulger respects competence, direct questions, and people who take responsibility for their choices. He tests strangers with small omissions and practical challenges, watching whether they notice. He may offer a useful route or hunting advice, but expects leverage in return. If confronted with evidence of his lies, he first reframes them as necessary; if that fails, he tries to redirect attention toward the immediate danger.
Goal
Find and kill the Tidemaw before it reaches the fishing grounds, then make the hunt seem to prove that his methods are necessary.
Motivation
Wulger believes control and decisiveness are the only reliable protections against a hostile coast. Beneath that conviction is a need to prove that the frightened boy who once waited for everyone to agree did not cause his uncle's death.
Appearance
Wulger is a tall, long-limbed hunter whose movements are economical until the instant they become startlingly quick. His pale skin is browned by salt sun, and almost-black green scales lie in small overlapping patches along his temples, collarbones, ribs, and knuckles. Green serpent eyes fix on people without the usual social flicker of attention. His teeth are sharp and visible when he smiles, which is rarely reassuring. He smells distinctly of crushed marsh mint, wet leather, and the sour mineral tang of low-tide pools; he knows about the mint, but not the rest. Unexpectedly, he collects tiny carved wooden toys and keeps them carefully wrapped in oilcloth.
Clothing
A sleeveless coat of layered sealskin and patched sailcloth, secured with braided marsh grass. He wears dark leggings, soft-soled boots, a weatherproof hood, and a belt crowded with hooks, bone toggles, and small utility knives.
Body language
He keeps his shoulders angled toward the nearest route out and turns his head before his torso, like a reptile tracking movement. When assessing someone, he goes very still and parts his lips enough to show the tips of his teeth. Anger makes him move faster, not louder: he handles tools, buckles, and weapons with abrupt, hard precision.

Personality
15 traits and drivesWulger can be focused and unexpectedly considerate when teaching a practical skill, but that care vanishes when he thinks someone is slowing the group down. He is clever enough to plan several steps ahead, yet his temper makes him take needless risks when challenged. Around elders he can perform the dutiful son; with younger hunters he becomes brusque and persuasive, making ruthlessness sound like hard-earned wisdom.

Background
Wulger was raised in a Lightfoot family where hunts were shared work: elders chose the season, children learned to read tracks, and every catch was divided before anyone celebrated. As an adolescent he was sweet-natured and painstaking, once spending a night in freezing reeds to guide a lost cousin home rather than leave them behind. That changed during the Tidemaw winter, when a strange sea beast drove a fishing boat onto the rocks. Wulger held the creature's attention long enough for the crew to escape, then watched his uncle die when the family rushed back to save him. Wulger decided that hesitation and shared command were luxuries paid for in blood. He began organizing smaller, secretive hunts, then claimed kills that had involved other people and hid the dangerous methods he used. His boldness made him famous and his relatives wary. His mother, Sada, still asks him to return to the old communal rites; his cousin Yermek covers for him but resents the lies. A young tracker, Boro, idolizes him and has begun copying his worst habits. Now the island's hunters are divided over whether Wulger's new traditions protect them or are turning them into a band of reckless killers.
Role in the story
A celebrated local hunter whose innovations can help the characters survive the island, while his escalating deceit and recklessness threaten to fracture the community. He can become a dangerous ally, a rival whose methods must be exposed, or a tragic warning about what fear can turn a protector into.

- Faction
- A famous but divisive member of the island's Lightfoot hunting families; he has established a new, more individualistic hunting tradition that is not yet an official faction.
