Tiede
Tiede
At the table
Voice
His voice has the clear, slightly dry edge of someone used to speaking over wind and outdoor noise, with a German-accented English shaped by the Harz Mountains. He sometimes draws a breath through his teeth before beginning a hard sentence. His recently changed voice still feels unfamiliar to him, and fatigue can make it rasp at the end of a long day.
He speaks carefully, choosing concrete words and leaving room for an answer. His Harz-born German cadence shapes his English; he sometimes pauses to find an idiom, then chooses a plainer phrase. When frightened, he asks practical questions in quick succession. When angry, he becomes more direct and names the problem rather than disguising it as a suggestion.
Speech patterns
How to play them
Meet him as a person rather than a puzzle. He responds best to practical kindness, direct questions, and respect for his boundaries. Do not demand details of his former life or treat his gender as a debate. When he becomes panicked, offer one clear choice at a time and let him help with a concrete task.
Goal
Keep Cross and Crown alive and intact long enough to learn whether the crossing can be reversed, without letting fear turn his strange inheritance into a danger to them.
Motivation
To make a temporary band of strangers into a place where nobody is left alone, while quietly searching for a way to return to the family he remembers.
Appearance
A handsome young man with the open, weather-shaped features of the Harz Mountains: a straight nose, strong brows, and a face that looks kindest when he is listening. His dark hair lies in soft, stubborn waves, usually flattened where he has worried it with his fingers. He moves carefully through unfamiliar rooms, testing the floor with each step before committing his weight. When startled, he draws a small breath through his teeth and holds it. Within a minute of meeting him, people often notice that he checks the cuff of his left sleeve as if confirming his hand is still there. The warmth that once bloomed in that palm left no visible mark, only a fleeting smell of a banked hearth.
Clothing
A patched wool coat, plain shirt, sturdy trousers, and boots chosen for walking rather than appearance. He keeps the collar loose and the sleeves easy to roll, because he is still learning what feels comfortable on this body.
Body language
He angles his shoulders toward whoever is speaking and keeps his hands visible, a habit that makes him seem more at ease than he is. His left thumb repeatedly checks the edge of his cuff. Fear makes him hold his breath; embarrassment makes him rub his sternum as if calming a racing heart. When he is angry, he plants his feet and speaks more directly instead of shrinking away.

Distinguishing features
Personality
14 traits and drivesPatient and considerate in a crowd, especially when someone is frightened or ashamed. Alone with the companions, he can become privately frantic, counting provisions and imagining every way a plan might fail. He wants to be dependable, but resents being treated as endlessly capable. When rested, he is gently curious; when hungry or frightened, unfamiliar surges of appetite, anger, and desire can make him feel like a stranger to himself.

Combat
AC 12 · HP 5 · 30 ft.Tiede is a level 0, noncombatant NPC, not a trained adventurer. He stays behind cover, ushers others toward an exit, and uses his staff only to fend off someone closing on a companion. The Firedrake flicker is a frightening, unreliable custom manifestation, not a spell or a dependable combat option.

Background
Before the crossing, Tiede was a woman in America, with a family, a familiar body, and a life whose former profession he has not yet chosen to explain. The crossing tore him from that life and left him among displaced adventuring companions in a place where he has to learn the local rules from scratch. He remembers the people he left behind with a clarity that can make an ordinary smell or turn of phrase hurt. In this world, his body is male, and he understands himself as a man. The change has brought unfamiliar strength, height, appetite, anger, desire, and a voice that still surprises him. He has no neat answer for which feelings belong to age, stress, or the crossing; he expects people to judge the man they see, and tries to meet them on those terms. He became caretaker and mediator in the small mutual-aid band called Cross and Crown because somebody had to keep arguments from turning into abandonment. During a fearful night, his palm gave off a brief, smoke-scented warmth. He has told only one companion. Now he is trying to keep his friends fed, safe, and together while fearing that whatever woke in him might someday burn exactly what he means to protect.
