Yzara Yusht
Yzara Yusht
At the table
Voice
Yzara speaks from the chest with the clear projection of someone accustomed to calling commands across a windy pass. The sound is dry-edged and grounded, with slight rasp after long days on horseback. She does not sing her words or soften them when angry; frustration sharpens her pace and makes her gestures larger.
Her speech is shaped by years of giving orders over wind, hooves, and hammering bridge timbers. She places consonants firmly and speaks in compact clauses, with a dry, road-tested humor that appears when she trusts the room. She names the practical consequence before the principle, and her anger comes through as clipped, forceful directness rather than a lowered voice.
Speech patterns
How to play them
Yzara gives a visitor a direct hearing if they bring specific evidence, a useful skill, or a credible stake in the matter. She dislikes flattery and tests claims with concrete questions. Earn her trust by naming costs honestly and proposing who will take responsibility. She will make room for mercy, but not for evasion.
Goal
Keep the river towns from revolting while securing a fair drought-water compact that does not leave the upland villages to starve.
Motivation
She wants to prove that necessary power can still be accountable, and that a ruler can protect people without making them into numbers on a map.
Appearance
Yzara is strikingly beautiful in the way a sunlit cliff face is beautiful: composed, imposing, and shaped by weather. Her long brown curls are dense and springy, usually bound in a high braid with loose coils catching at her temples. Emerald-green eyes hold a steady, assessing gaze. Her warm olive skin is stippled across the nose and shoulders by years of highland sun, and the backs of her hands are roughened by reins, sword grips, and winter reins. She moves with economical, practiced certainty, placing each foot as if the floor might be a bridge under strain. The detail that catches people off guard is the tiny, careful paper bird she folds from the corners of discarded royal decrees, then leaves on windowsills for children to find.
Clothing
A deep green riding coat over a fitted coat of dark, articulated plate, with gold stitching at the cuffs and a wine-red sash marking the crown. Her boots are polished but creased from actual use. A small brass ring on a cord is tucked beneath her collar.
Body language
She stands squarely, shoulders relaxed but ready, and rarely fidgets. When listening, she keeps her chin level and turns her whole body toward the speaker. Her thumb rubs the worn ridge of a ring when she is weighing a choice. In battle, her posture becomes startlingly still before she moves.

Combat
AC 21 · HP 240 · 30 feetYzara tries to control space rather than chase kills. She uses her long reach, Action Surge, and four attacks to break a dangerous opponent's tempo, while Crown's Reach gets threatened allies out of immediate danger. She holds Second Wind until wounded or until a decisive strike is available. If civilians are present, she prioritizes shielding them and directing evacuation over pursuing enemies.

Background
Yzara was born to a minor human household that kept the high road pass of Silt Ford, where caravans, messengers, and armies all had to slow for the crossing. At seventeen she became a hostage-cadet at court, officially a sign of loyalty and privately a bargaining chip. She learned to read maps, watch hands during negotiations, and fight in armor before she was allowed to choose her own horse. Her formative moment came during the winter of the Broken Span: an enemy column trapped her and a company of defenders on a collapsing bridge. She ordered the bridge cut before the last soldiers had crossed, saving the valley from invasion but stranding her mentor, Captain Shesh, on the far bank. Shesh survived, but never forgave the decision. Years later, Yzara won the crown through a peaceful succession backed by the army and several river towns. She rules from a road-worn palace, keeps the old pass open, and insists on hearing petitions in person. Now a drought has made the river towns accuse the court of diverting water, while her cousin Tesh asks for a dangerous concession to prevent revolt. Yzara is trying to keep the realm intact without repeating the brutal arithmetic that made her queen.
