Old Johnny
Old Johnny
At the table
“Can you swim?”
Voice
His voice has a dry rasp from salt air and years of shouting across decks, with a slight catch at the end of long sentences. He projects from his chest without bellowing, and a sudden command comes out sharper than his usual measured speech. His laugh is a short, breathy bark, often followed by a cough he pretends not to notice.
He speaks in compact, workmanlike phrases, with the clipped rhythm of someone used to being heard over wind and rigging. Nautical vocabulary slips into ordinary conversation, but he translates it when asked. His humor arrives sideways, usually as a practical observation that takes a moment to register.
Speech patterns
How to play them
Treat him as a capable local with useful knowledge, not as a quest dispenser. He warms to people who listen, work alongside him, and ask what he needs rather than what he knows. Dismissing his concerns makes him terse; showing evidence changes his mind. If the party helps inspect the culvert, he offers practical support and a piece of his past only after the immediate danger is handled.
Goal
Convince the quay builders to reopen the tidal culvert before the next spring storm, without turning the harbor against his daughter.
Motivation
To leave people with a safe way home, and to prove that caution can be care rather than cowardice.
Appearance
Old Johnny is a spare, weather-browned man with a long-backed stoop that straightens whenever a rope comes under tension. His face is folded into fine creases from salt glare and squinting toward horizons; his close-cropped white hair stands in wiry tufts, as if it has never accepted a comb's authority. His eyes keep moving around a room, checking exits, rafters, windows, and who has their back to the door. He takes up less space than his height suggests, habitually turning sideways to let others pass. The unexpected thing is his immaculate, carefully waxed mustache, curled into two neat hooks that look absurdly formal above his patched work clothes. He moves with small, economical steps, but his hands are quick when a knot slips. He leaves the impression of a man who has already noticed the leak everyone else is arguing about.
Clothing
A faded blue wool coat patched at the elbows, a canvas waistcoat, tar-dark trousers, and old deck boots with fresh soles. A clean linen neckcloth and a neatly waxed mustache lend him an incongruous air of ceremony.
Body language
He stands slightly outside the center of a group, leaving a clear path to the door and unconsciously measuring the distance to anything that could serve as a handhold. When he is worried, his thumb tests the same knot in his belt cord. He leans in when someone describes a practical problem, but leans back when praised.

Background
Johnny spent much of his youth aboard the merchant brig Sable Mackerel, first as a powder runner and later as a pirate deckhand under Captain Hadrik. He was never the bravest man aboard, but he could keep a crew working through a bad watch and knew when a ship was being run into the ground. During a long, feverish crossing, the captain refused to leave a leaking vessel until the cargo was secured. Johnny led the surviving hands in abandoning ship, cutting the last line himself. The crew lived; the captain and the cargo did not. That choice ended Johnny's pirating and made him a mutineer in the eyes of some old shipmates. He settled at the harbor of Gull-and-Gorse, a local name for the stubborn plants that choke its seawall, and spent decades repairing nets and helping crews get home. His daughter, Nessa, runs a small ferry and thinks he has confused caution with wisdom. His former shipmate Varo still sends him letters asking for help finding the captain's lost logbook. Now the harbor's new quay is being built over a sealed tidal culvert, and Johnny is certain the first hard storm will flood the low quarter. The builders call him a crank; he has not yet found proof they will respect.
Role in the story
A retired pirate whose hard-earned caution can help the party understand a harbor crisis. He offers knowledge, a local connection, and a moral question about when leaving someone behind becomes necessary. His level denotes the twenty years since he retired, not exceptional adventuring power.
