Her hands are quick and permanently dusted at the nail beds with gray-black ink, while the rest of her skin is kept almost unnervingly clean. She wears a brass measuring chain around her left wrist, its links polished bright except for one flattened section where it repeatedly catches against the edge of her writing desk. Within a minute of meeting her, most people notice her teeth: the front two are slightly broad and square, and when she laughs, which is rare, her jaw opens with an unexpectedly wolfish breadth. The contradiction is striking: her presence is soft, sterile, and almost delicate, yet her smile suggests someone who could bite through thread, leather, or a lie.

Nino is patient with strangers, severe with officials, and surprisingly tender with damaged objects. She can spend hours reconstructing a torn receipt but will interrupt a friend mid-sentence to correct a date. In public she appears serene and almost antiseptic, speaking with careful courtesy. At age nine, she began helping in the Hall of Civic Records, where she learned that a city could be controlled by changing a single word. Her formative experience came during the winter of the Empty Bells, when a fire destroyed an entire archive. Nino spent three days carrying ledgers through smoke while officials argued over which records were worth saving. She rescued a book of anonymous depositions, only to discover years later that several testimonies had been altered in her own handwriting by a senior archivist who used her as an unwitting model for the forgery. Since then, she has treated every document as a witness that might be frightened, bribed, or wounded. She now organizes a private scriptorium beneath the old observatory, cataloging papers that hint at erased lives. Her mother still believes Nino should take over the family bindery. Her younger brother, Toma, works as a courier for the very magistrates Nino suspects of suppressing history. Meanwhile, the former senior archivist, Magistrate Odran Kveshi, occasionally sends her delicate commissions and watches to see whether she has discovered the full extent of his crimes.
