Voice

Ilyan's voice has a dry, steady rasp from years of cold-road watches and speaking over wind. His consonants are clean and deliberate, shaped by a childhood spent hearing travelers from many regions. When rattled, his breathing hitches before his voice does; then his words come out hard and direct, at full volume.

He speaks in grounded, practical sentences, with a habit of framing questions before making judgments. His pauses often fall where another person might expect a flourish. He avoids grand religious language unless making a formal vow, and then his phrasing becomes spare and exact.

Speech patterns

Uses concrete questions before making promises: "How many are still inside?"
When offering comfort, gives a practical choice rather than a grand reassurance.
Refers to duty as a tool, never as an excuse.
When angry, speaks in clipped, forceful bursts and does not lower his volume.
Uses names carefully and repeats a person's name when he wants them to know he has heard them.

How to play them

Ilyan treats strangers with open courtesy but does not mistake politeness for trust. He responds well to practical honesty, especially from people who admit uncertainty. If someone is threatened by an unjust authority, he listens first and offers concrete help. Attempts to manipulate him with appeals to rank or doctrine make him ask pointed questions.

Goal

Find who is selling the hospice road's travel schedules, stop the disappearances, and bring back proof without letting the Lantern Vow bury the truth.

Motivation

To make his vows serve living people rather than protect the comfort of those who interpret them.

Appearance

Ilyan has the broad, weathered presence of someone built for long roads, but what people remember first is his breathing: a steady, measured draw through his nose, followed by a brief pause as if he is listening for a change in the air. When startled, the rhythm catches sharply and his next words arrive on an unmistakable exhale. He keeps his dark hair combed and his short beard trimmed with almost fussy care, even after a muddy march. His polished armor is scratched and dulled at the knees from kneeling beside the wounded. He moves with deliberate economy, placing each foot as though testing a bridge plank.

Clothing

Fitted chain mail beneath a dark green surcoat bearing a small, plain lantern emblem. His wool cloak is patched at the hem, his gloves are carefully mended, and a narrow amber cord is tied around one wrist in remembrance of the hospice where he grew up.

Body language

He stands squarely, but rarely blocks a doorway. When listening, he tips his head slightly and keeps his hands open. His posture stiffens around formal commanders; with children and the injured, he lowers himself to their eye level. When rattled, he grips the edge of his shield and his carefully paced breathing breaks into a sharp, audible hitch.

Distinguishing features

His breathing is conspicuously even in calm situations, then catches in a sharp hitch when he is startled.
He maintains an unusually neat beard and hair even when the rest of his travel gear is muddy.
A small amber cord is tied around his left wrist, hidden beneath his gauntlet during battle.
His armor is polished at the chest but deeply scuffed at the knees from frequent work among the wounded.

Personality

12 traits and drives

Ilyan is patient with frightened people and exacting with officials, yet he hates being treated as a moral example. He can make room for another person's anger, but when someone uses procedure to excuse cruelty, his restraint turns into a blunt, public challenge. In peaceful company he is dryly funny and observant; after a long watch he grows formal and guarded, as if every casual word might become a promise.

Alignment
Neutral good

Quirks

Taps his thumb against the inside of his shield before entering a dangerous place, once for every person he expects to protect.
Turns cups so their handles face the person who will use them.
Collects small pieces of unusually smooth river stone and leaves them at roadside shrines without explanation.
Polishes the buckles on his armor while thinking, even when the rest of his gear is filthy.

Habits

Checks a doorway's hinges and the nearest water source before settling into a room.
Offers the first portion of his meal to whoever has been standing watch longest.
When anxious, measures his breathing against a slow count on his fingers, hiding the count inside a grooming gesture.
If an authority figure gives a harmful order, asks one precise question in public before deciding whether to refuse.
After a fight, checks the defeated for injuries before collecting weapons.

Traits · 3

Offers steady reassurance to the frightened but refuses to promise outcomes he cannot control.
Can be unexpectedly wry with companions, then stiffens when praised for being virtuous.
Shows patience toward mistakes made in fear and little patience for harm defended as policy.

Flaws · 3

He can delay decisive action while searching for a choice that harms no one.
He takes on dangerous duties without asking for help, then resents others for not noticing his strain.
He gives authority figures one chance too many to correct themselves.

Fears · 3

That he will obey a bad order again because refusal is frightening.
That his care for Bruk is an attempt to soothe his own guilt rather than make amends.
That the order's reputation matters more to its leaders than the people it claims to protect.

Wants and needs · 3

Evidence strong enough to confront the Lantern Vow's leadership
A chance to tell Bruk the truth without making the confession another demand for forgiveness
Rest and help before his sense of duty becomes another excuse to work alone

Combat

AC 19 · HP 44 · 30 ft.

Ilyan plants himself between danger and the people least able to withstand it. He uses his shield to hold a narrow passage, makes two controlled attacks against the most immediate threat, and spends spell slots on Divine Smite when a foe endangers a companion or proves unusually difficult to stop. He uses Bless early when allies can benefit, and Shield of Faith when he must hold a position alone. He avoids pursuing fleeing enemies if doing so would expose civilians.

Background

Ilyan was raised in a roadside hospice where his mother, a practical healer, treated travelers regardless of their faith or allegiance. At nineteen he joined the Lantern Vow, an order sworn to escort refugees through dangerous borderlands. During a winter evacuation, his commander ordered the gates shut to keep raiders from entering the refuge. Ilyan obeyed, then learned that several families had been left outside, including the young messenger who had warned them of the attack. He found the messenger alive beneath a wagon the next morning, but the boy's family was gone. That failure changed his understanding of duty: a rule could guide a choice, but it could not make the choice innocent. He still serves the order, though its elders consider his habit of questioning orders a dangerous precedent. He sends part of his pay to his mother and visits the messenger, now a taciturn caravan guard, whenever their routes cross. His current trouble is a string of disappearances along the old hospice road. The order wants him to protect its reputation; Ilyan suspects its own quartermaster has been selling travel schedules to bandits.

Role in the story

A principled escort and potential ally whose investigation can expose corruption inside a respected religious order. He can offer the party protection and local knowledge, but his buried role in the gate disaster may strain trust if discovered.

“At nineteen he joined the Lantern Vow, an order sworn to escort refugees through dangerous borderlands.”
From their background
Faction
The Lantern Vow, a regional order of paladins and escorts. Ilyan remains sworn to its purpose but is increasingly at odds with its leadership.

Known connections

His mother, Oruva, still runs the roadside hospice and sends him lists of needed supplies instead of asking whether he is safe.
The caravan guard Bruk survived the winter evacuation as a child. He and Ilyan share an uneasy affection, complicated by the fact that Bruk remembers who was left outside.
Captain Drel of the Lantern Vow believes Ilyan's public questioning undermines discipline and is quietly collecting grounds to remove him from escort duty.
A traveling cook called Tesh has become Ilyan's trusted source on the disappearances along the hospice road.
