At the table

“A bargain with one wheel missing still rolls downhill.”
From how they speak

Voice

Glorien's voice has the dry rasp of dust scraped from a wagon canvas, with a faint nasal whistle at the end of an exhale. He projects from his chest to carry over teams and road noise. When unsettled, his breathing hitches before his voice does, and his next words arrive in brisk, sharply separated phrases.

He speaks in practical clauses, with the clipped precision of someone used to giving instructions over wheel noise and wind. His vocabulary is full of roads, loads, and weather. When rattled, his breath catches high and briefly whistles through his nose; his words then come out faster and more exact, never softer.

Speech patterns

Turns vague promises into practical questions: "Who watches the drivers while the guards chase the bandits?"
Uses road and wagon imagery to explain risk: "A bargain with one wheel missing still rolls downhill."
Names the terms aloud and asks the other party to repeat them before he agrees.
When alarmed, his breath briefly whistles through his nose and his sentences become clipped and exact.

How to play them

Open with the actual route, cargo, and pay, then ask prospective guards how they would protect the workers during an ambush. He will negotiate firmly but fairly, and will walk away from a plan that treats drivers as expendable. He is more persuaded by a practical watch rotation and a clear retreat plan than by boasts.

Goal

Hire dependable guards for the journey leaving after the gathering at the Golden Hart Inn, with terms that protect the drivers as well as the cargo.

Motivation

To keep his small company solvent without sacrificing the lives or dignity of the people who make it work.

Appearance

Glorien has the weathered, attentive look of a man who has spent years reading roads before they turn dangerous. His tawny skin is wind-dried at the temples, and his close-cropped iron-gray hair bristles like a scrub brush. His broad nose and steady hazel eyes give his face an almost cheerful bluntness, though his attention keeps flicking to exits, wheels, and whoever is carrying the heaviest load. He moves with a rolling, measured gait that compensates for a stiff right knee. Within a minute, people notice the sharp smell of crushed fennel and horse sweat clinging to his coat; he knows about it and insists it keeps the flies off. Unexpectedly for a hard-driving merchant captain, he carries a tiny, carefully mended wooden bird in his breast pocket and rubs its beak with his thumb when worried.

Clothing

A dark green wool road coat with reinforced elbows, a russet waistcoat, thick trousers, and mud-proof boots. A brass whistle hangs on a cord at his collar; his gloves are patched at the palms and kept meticulously dry.

Body language

He plants his walking stick between his boots when negotiating and keeps one hand on its brass-capped handle. When challenged, his shoulders square and his breath catches high in his chest; he makes himself exhale before answering. Under pressure he rubs the little wooden bird in his pocket, then looks directly at the person who needs help.

Distinguishing features

Smells of crushed fennel, horse sweat, and rain-dark wool; he knows and claims the fennel discourages flies.
Carries a tiny wooden bird with a visibly mended wing, rubbing its beak with his thumb when unsettled.
A brass whistle at his collar is polished from constant handling, though its cord is frayed.

Personality

13 traits and drives

Glorien is welcoming when a stranger shows practical competence, yet guarded around anyone who speaks as if money can settle every question. He is shrewd about trade and generous with workers, but those instincts pull against each other when a shipment is already overdue. In a calm room he jokes dryly and listens more than he talks; when someone threatens his crew, his warmth vanishes and he becomes startlingly direct. Afterward, he is liable to apologize for the sharpness while refusing to soften the decision.

Quirks

Taps a table twice before agreeing to any number, as if checking whether it holds weight.
Sniffs every cup of water before drinking, then claims he is checking for well water's mineral bite.
Turns his walking stick so its brass cap points toward the nearest exit whenever he sits down.
Keeps spare buttons in a labeled tobacco tin despite not smoking.
When counting aloud, gives the horses a number in the tally even when they are not part of the calculation.

Habits

Counts the people in a room before he looks at the decorations.
Checks a wagon's wheels and harnesses himself, even when a hired teamster assures him they are fine.
When plans become dangerous, he asks who will be left behind before he asks what the cargo is worth.
After a successful negotiation, he immediately starts planning the next day's route.

Traits · 4

Welcomes useful disagreement but bristles at grandstanding.
Can bargain hard over a price, then quietly cover a worker's meal from his own purse.
Prefers evidence to confidence, though he secretly envies people who can act without running every consequence through their minds.
Offers reassurance through practical plans rather than comforting words.

Flaws · 3

His need to protect his workers can become controlling; he sometimes withholds risky choices instead of letting them decide.
He tries to carry financial trouble alone until it has become a crisis.
He distrusts polished assurances, even when a partner has earned his trust.

Fears · 3

That a worker will die because he accepted a contract with inadequate protection.
That one more bad season will force him to dismiss the people who depend on his caravan.
Being praised for a rescue that came too late to save everyone.

Wants and needs · 3

Dependable guards who will not abandon the drivers to pursue stolen cargo.
A watch plan that covers the wagons, the people, and the team's animals.
Enough income from this run to pay his workers on time.

Combat

AC 12 · HP 9 · 30 ft.

Glorien is not a trained soldier. He stays near the drivers and wagons, uses cover, calls out threats, and tries to create a safe retreat rather than chase enemies. He strikes only when cornered or when a worker is in immediate danger, and uses Clear the Wheel to get someone out of a kill zone.

Background

Glorien began as a wagon boy on the northern salt road, learning arithmetic by counting sacks and judgment by watching drivers. At twenty-six, a bridge gave way beneath a rain-heavy train of carts. Glorien cut a trapped team free, then went back across the broken span for the last driver, a young woman named Halla. He saved her, but the cargo was lost and his employer blamed the workers for the wreck. Glorien quit, borrowed against his own future, and built a modest caravan business on a promise that cargo and crew would be treated as obligations of equal weight. Halla now runs his dispatches and argues with him whenever he risks too much for a shipment. His younger brother, Eyd, repairs wagons and thinks Glorien's caution is slowly strangling the business. A run of thefts has left Glorien short on money and short on sleep. At the Golden Hart Inn, he is hiring guards for an upcoming journey, but refuses to sign any arrangement that protects the merchandise by abandoning the drivers.
