Salvo
Salvo
At the table
Voice
His voice is dry and carrying, roughened by salt air and years of shouting over canvas, wind, and creaking timbers. A faint rasp catches on hard consonants, as if every sentence has passed through a throat full of sea spray. He can make himself heard across a deck without shouting.
He speaks in clipped harbor Common, with the rounded vowels and hard consonants of a man raised among dock crews and sharpened by years of giving orders over wind and rigging. He uses nautical terms precisely, dislikes flowery explanations, and does not raise his voice when angry; he makes it carry by choosing words no one can mistake.
Speech patterns
How to play them
Offer a useful bargain before revealing what he wants. He values competence, punctuality, and clear terms, but interprets kindness as either leverage or weakness until proven otherwise. He may hire the characters to retrieve a chart, escort a ship, or eliminate a witness. If confronted with proof of the Saint Orra deaths, he first tries to buy silence; if that fails, he tries to control who hears the truth.
Goal
Find the admiral's sealed chart, destroy the evidence tying him to the Saint Orra deaths, and keep Inez from learning how long he waited before opening the hatch.
Motivation
He wants proof that the privateers who profited from the Saint Orra disaster were protected by the admiralty, partly to protect himself and partly because he cannot bear to be the only guilty person left standing.
Appearance
Salvo is a broad, weather-browned man with a compact, powerful frame and a rolling gait that seems to anticipate the deck's pitch even on dry land. He stands unnervingly still when listening, weight settled on his left heel; when he moves, each step lands with the deliberate certainty of a dropped anchor. His square jaw works constantly, and his small, blunt teeth show whenever he eats: he chews slowly, eyes fixed on whoever is speaking, as if appraising how long they would last in a lifeboat. His black saber has a pommel shaped like a skull and a guard forged into the shape of a rib cage. The blade drinks in light rather than reflecting it. Unexpectedly for a feared pirate captain, he keeps a tiny, meticulously tended herb garden in a rack of cracked teacups on his cabin window.
Clothing
A tar-dark captain's coat with faded brass toggles, a salt-stiff red sash, a high-necked linen shirt, and sea boots polished only at the toes. His cuffs are lined with practical hidden pockets for a whetstone, spare flint, and folded notes.
Body language
He plants his boots as if the floor might shift, keeps his left shoulder slightly forward, and watches hands more closely than faces. When considering a bargain, he rubs his thumb over the saber's rib-shaped guard. His jaw goes still before he gives an order.

Personality
14 traits and drivesSalvo is brutally practical and almost tender with the people and small routines he considers his own. He can share food with a frightened deckhand one minute and order that same deckhand thrown overboard for desertion the next. In calm company he listens more than he speaks; under pressure he becomes blunt, decisive, and contemptuous of anyone who asks for time to grieve.

Background
Salvo grew up hauling nets in a harbor where the magistrates charged poor families for the privilege of using the seawall. At nineteen, he joined a privateer crew and learned that a legal seal could make any atrocity respectable. Years later, during a mutiny aboard the cutter Saint Orra, the captain locked the lower deck while flames spread through the ship. Salvo broke the hatch from the outside, but only after he had taken the captain's key and secured the strongbox. The survivors followed him afterward, not because they mistook him for kind, but because he had chosen who would live and made no apology for it. He took the black saber from the dead captain and built a crew around one rule: shares are paid on time, and disobedience is punished in public. Now he commands the Silt-Clearing Fleet, named for the dredgers who built its old home harbor. His quartermaster, Toma, keeps the crew fed and openly challenges his decisions; his estranged daughter, Inez, works as a harbor pilot and refuses to board his ship. Salvo wants a retired admiral's sealed chart, which could expose the privateers who profited from the Saint Orra disaster. The chart is also evidence that Salvo delayed opening the hatch while he searched the captain's cabin.
Role in the story
A dangerous patron, rival, or recurring antagonist whose offers are reliable in their terms but morally ruthless in their consequences. His search for the chart can draw the party into a contest between pirates, harbor pilots, and the admiralty.

- Faction
