Sessa
Sessa
At the table
“when she likes them and”
Voice
A dry, chest-forward voice with a little gravel at the edges, built to carry through the racket of a workshop. Her words have the measured cadence of someone listening for a machine to answer. When she is amused, the front-tooth gap gives her laugh a brief airy whistle; when she is angry, she speaks faster and more precisely, as if pinning every word to a workbench.
Her speech is shaped by years of calling over pumps and workshop clatter: firm consonants, clipped instructions, and a habit of pausing to hear the answer before she gives one. She uses plain words until a technical detail matters, then becomes exact and fast. Her jokes arrive dry and sideways.

How to play them
Sessa warms to people who respect the work and admit what they do not know. Offer a practical problem, bring a useful scrap, or ask about a device and she will become generous with advice. She dislikes grand promises and responds to pressure by asking for specifics. If the characters help investigate the foundation or recover stolen stock, she offers repairs at cost and shares what she has learned.
Goal
Find the source of the rhythmic vibration beneath the shop before it cracks the old pump-house foundations, while keeping her business solvent.
Motivation
To make things that protect ordinary people, and to prove that careful work can be brave even when nobody cheers for it.
Appearance
Sessa stands with her weight planted on the outside edges of her boots, as if bracing against a floor that might suddenly lurch. She has a broad, practical face, a strong jaw, and square teeth with a conspicuous gap between the front pair; when she eats, she tests each bite with a small sideways grind before committing. Her movements are economical but never still: one shoulder rolls, a thumb checks a seam, a boot nudges a loose fitting back into line. Her unexpectedly lovely habit is keeping a tiny window box of violets on the shop's soot-black forge ledge, fussed over with the same concentration she gives a precision valve. People leave with the impression of a doorstop that learned to laugh.
Clothing
A soot-brown work coat with padded elbows, a leather apron patched in three kinds of hide, a tool belt crowded with labeled vials, and thick boots whose soles have been replaced twice. A violet is usually tucked into the apron strap.
Body language
She braces her heels wide when listening, leans her head toward a machine as though it were telling a secret, and points with the blunt end of a tool rather than a finger. A laugh pulls her jaw open wide enough to show the tooth gap; anger makes her set her teeth and flex her hands against her apron.

Background
Sessa learned repair work from her mother, who kept the sluice gates and water clocks of a river town running. At nineteen, Sessa was on shift when a neglected floodgate jammed. She chose to save a trapped apprentice rather than obey the foreman's order to hold the mechanism in place; the gate broke, the lower workshops flooded, and her mother lost her livelihood. Sessa spent years paying back the damages and learning to build devices that fail safely. She came to the city with a battered tool chest and opened The Humming Brace in a converted pump house. Her mother, Hesta, now lives upriver and writes only when she needs a repair. Sessa's former teacher, Dannel, sends her customers but resents that she has made a living from careful work instead of joining his costly engineering consortium. A recent run of stolen parts has left her shop short on supplies, and the humming in the old foundation has become too regular to dismiss as pipes settling.
Role in the story
A resourceful contact, neighborhood anchor, and potential source of a mystery centered on the failing machinery beneath her shop. Her problem can develop into a rescue, investigation, or moral choice about who bears the cost of keeping the district safe.

- Faction
- Independent shopkeeper of The Humming Brace; trusted by the pump-house district's repair workers, but not formally part of an organization.
