Ussha
Ussha
At the table
Voice
Her voice has a dry, papery rasp from soot and years of calling above street noise, with a faint wet click at the back of certain consonants. When amused, she snorts through her nose; when angry, she gets blunt and names people, prices, and consequences.
She speaks in quick, clipped bursts shaped by years of calling over carts and keeping sentences short around suspicious listeners. Her word choices are practical and full of street landmarks. She often leaves the most important noun unsaid until she knows who is listening.
Speech patterns
How to play them
Let her beg without interrupting, then make a small, direct purchase of information. She respects clear limits and remembers who pays fairly. Offer useful news about missing people or safe sleeping places, but do not demand her brother's story as the price of conversation.
Goal
Find out who is interested in the sealed cellar, keep the neighborhood's children out of the coming trouble, and earn enough to rent a locked room.
Motivation
To turn the attention she once failed to keep into a livelihood that can protect people without making her dependent on anyone.
Appearance
Ussha sits slumped in the cracked alley beside the Crooked Welcome, a shabby tavern whose keeper still refuses her entry. Her posture makes her seem smaller and more exhausted than she is; only her eyes keep moving, counting windows, boots, and pauses in conversation. Rain and soot have stippled her olive-green skin with a permanent gray sheen, and she smells sharply of wet wool, onion peel, and the tavern's smoky drain. She knows about the onion smell and claims it keeps dogs from sniffing her pockets. Her broad ears twitch independently toward nearby talk. The unexpected detail: she has an immaculate, bright yellow wooden comb tucked behind one ear, polished smooth and absurdly clean amid the grime.
Clothing
A patched brown cloak with a torn hem, a men's waistcoat worn inside out, and soft-soled boots wrapped at the ankles in strips of old sailcloth. The clothes are deliberately dull, but carefully arranged so no pocket bulges.
Body language
She slumps with her knees wide and shoulders rounded, left palm extended to beg. Her right hand stays half-hidden, pinching a dirty scrap of paper. She watches people by following reflections in puddles and window glass, and her ears swivel before her head does. When she trusts someone, she sits upright and lets them see both hands.

Background
Ussha grew up running errands between market stalls and learned early that people speak freely around someone they consider furniture. At twelve, a watch patrol cleared her family's sleeping place beneath a tannery bridge. She had been paid to keep watch that night, but froze when the patrol arrived; her younger brother Tesh slipped away through a culvert and was never found. Ussha still cannot decide whether he escaped or drowned. She began collecting scraps of street knowledge after that, first to track him, then because information bought food more reliably than pity. She now begs outside the Crooked Welcome, a tavern that bars goblins at the door, while its patrons unknowingly pay her for reports passed on dirty paper. The tavern's cook, Rilka, leaves her hot broth through a drain hatch and insists it is not charity. Ussha's current trouble is that three customers have separately asked about the same sealed cellar beneath the abandoned customs house; she suspects one is setting up a raid, but does not know which. She is saving enough to rent a room with a door that locks, and still checks every culvert for signs of Tesh.
Role in the story
A recurring source of street-level intelligence whose ordinary-looking presence makes her easy to overlook. Her information can guide the party toward a conspiracy, but her loyalties are shaped by the danger to neighborhood children and her unresolved search for Tesh.
“At twelve, a watch patrol cleared her family's sleeping place beneath a tannery bridge.”
- Faction
- No formal faction. She trades occasional reports with a watch clerk and a loose network of street vendors, but belongs to neither.
