She has a long oval face, a soft mouth usually pressed into concentration, and dark brown eyes that rarely meet a speaker's gaze because they are constantly mapping the room: exits, shelves, inkpots, loose corners, hands near weapons. Her black hair is braided into four uneven ropes, each tied with a different color of thread, and the braids sway like pendulums when she bends over her work. Her fingertips are permanently tinted blue-black from iron gall ink, while the rest of her hands are kept meticulously clean. She moves with careful, economical precision, stepping around scattered papers without looking down. The unexpected contradiction is that her scholarly composure collapses around birds. A sparrow on a windowsill can make her freeze, smile helplessly, and forget an entire conversation.

Ildikó is patient with the ignorant, impatient with the careless, and unexpectedly tender toward people who admit they are afraid. She can spend an hour comforting a stranger while refusing to answer her brother's letters because family affection makes her feel unqualified and exposed. In calm settings she is meticulous, dryly humorous, and observant. Under pressure she becomes brisk and commanding, with no patience for ceremony. When deeply hurt, she retreats into cataloguing and speaks about people as if they were entries in a record, a habit she hates in herself but cannot always stop.

Ildikó was born above a provincial mapmaker's shop in the river city of Oroszfal, where she learned letters by tracing shipping marks on crates. At thirteen, she became an assistant to Archivist Meret Vask, a severe woman who taught her that every missing page represented a person whose voice had been interrupted. Ildikó's life changed during the Flood of Saint Orra. When the river broke through the old archive, she had to choose between saving a locked cabinet of royal records and a trapped apprentice. She saved the cabinet, believing the apprentice had already drowned. Three days later, the apprentice was found alive in a bell tower, but the guilt permanently changed Ildikó's understanding of knowledge. Since then, she has treated every document as important, but no document as more important than a living person. She now works in the abandoned observatory archive of Bellweather Hill, cataloguing scraps recovered from ruined monasteries. Her current problem is that several pages from the forbidden Cartulary of First Names have begun appearing among her ordinary notes, each predicting a disappearance in Oroszfal. The predictions are accurate, and the next name is her own.
