Teggan
Teggan
At the table
Voice
A dry, chest-forward voice with a faint rasp from years of forge smoke. His consonants land firmly, like a tool set on a bench; after a long shift his breath catches slightly on words with several hard syllables. He projects over hammer noise without shouting.
He speaks in compact, workmanlike sentences, often naming the material or measurement before the opinion. He uses road and forge comparisons naturally, and leaves a deliberate pause before agreeing to anything he considers risky.
Speech patterns
How to play them
Teggan is wary of grand promises and responds best to clear needs, fair payment, and evidence that someone has considered the consequences. Offer a specific task and he will give a specific answer. Show concern for his apprentice or the safety of travelers, and his reserve becomes practical hospitality. Do not press him for sympathy; ask what needs fixing.
Goal
Keep The Knight in the Morn open through winter, repair the river bridge before the spring thaw, and give Niko enough room to become a better smith than he is.
Motivation
To make useful things that hold together when people depend on them, and to repay the trust he believes he failed during the flood.
Appearance
A broad, compact human with a wedge-shaped torso and a deliberate, heel-first gait, Teggan moves as if every floorboard might be hiding a loose nail. His close-cropped hair is combed into a severe side part, even after a long day at the forge; soot gathers in the part like dark pencil. His apron is stiff with old oil, and the brass buckles on it are polished with almost embarrassing care. He leaves the impression of a door barred from the inside: solid, practical, and more watchful than welcoming.
Clothing
A smoke-brown work shirt, thick leather apron with carefully polished brass buckles, wool trousers, and heavy boots with fresh hobnails. On cold days he wears a plain blue scarf tucked tightly under the apron straps.
Body language
He plants both feet before disagreeing, turns his whole torso rather than just his head, and grips the edge of a counter when discussing the flood. When pleased with a piece of work, he rubs its surface with his thumb as if listening through his skin.

Under pressure, he grows brisk and controlling, then later tries to repair the damage with a useful favor rather than an apology.

AC 16 · HP 44 · 30 ft.Teggan tries to keep threats away from customers and the forge's fuel stores. He fights with a hammer and uses the shop's sturdy benches and doorways to limit how many foes can reach him. He favors disarming or driving off an opponent over pursuing a fleeing one. If badly outnumbered, he retreats toward the street while shouting for witnesses.

Background
Teggan learned smithing from his mother, who repaired farm tools and wagon fittings in a roadside shed. At twenty, he joined a caravan as its wheelwright. During a spring flood, a bridge gave way beneath a loaded wagon. Teggan saved the driver but could not save the driver's young son, whose harness caught under the axle. He returned to town convinced that dependable work could prevent some kinds of grief, though he knows it cannot prevent all of them. Years later, he bought a failing shop and renamed it The Knight in the Morn, after a forgotten local knight who supposedly kept the old road passable. His apprentice, Niko, wants to make ornate weapons instead of practical repairs, and Teggan fears smothering the young craftsperson's ambition. His sister, Dema, runs a ferry across the nearby river and has lately been asking him to inspect a bridge he would rather not trust. Now a merchant caravan wants him to certify a batch of warped wheel rims before a dangerous journey, and the payment would keep his shop solvent for the winter.
Role in the story
A grounded local contact, repair expert, and reluctant source of information about dangerous roads. Teggan can equip a party, identify sabotage, and draw them into the conflict over the river bridge and the caravan's unsafe wheels.
