At the table

“How many wagons? How much water? Who walks at the rear?”
From how they speak

Voice

A dry, weather-scoured voice with a little rasp at the edges, projected from the chest to carry across a road crew. She clips the ends of directions but lets personal stories run longer than she intends. Laughter comes out as one surprised breath before she reins it in.

She speaks in clipped, workmanlike phrases shaped by years of calling directions over wind and wagon noise. Her vocabulary is full of practical landmarks and measured distances. When recounting a loss, she stops using contractions and gives each fact the care of a route marker.

Speech patterns

Describes routes as choices and consequences: "That track saves an hour and gives the ridge a clean shot at us."
Uses short, concrete questions: "How many wagons? How much water? Who walks at the rear?"
When pressed for certainty, distinguishes what she saw from what she suspects.
Uses dry humor sparingly, usually to puncture overconfidence.

How to play them

Eldra earns trust by showing evidence: a track, a slope, a water mark, or a sightline. She welcomes questions but resists demands for a guarantee. If the party helps inspect the route, she shares responsibility; if they dismiss the risks, she gives them the choice plainly and refuses to pretend their confidence makes the road safer.

Goal

Confirm a viable, honestly assessed route to Dawnvale and keep the caravan out of ambush country without promising a risk-free journey.

Motivation

To make sure the people who trust her judgment understand what they are choosing, rather than mistaking her expertise for a promise of safety.

Secret · GM only

Appearance

Eldra Valewind seems to occupy more of a room than her lean frame should allow. She stands squarely in doorways and beside maps, unconsciously claiming the best sightline, then shifts at once when someone needs through. Her weather-browned face is narrow and alert, with a small, habitual crease between the brows. Wind has roughened her cheeks; road dust catches in the fine seams of her leather gear. She moves with economical, heel-light steps, pausing so abruptly that others sometimes take another pace before realizing she has stopped. An unexpected softness: she carries a thumb-sized wooden horse, carefully rubbed smooth, and handles it with the tenderness of a keepsake rather than a tool.

Clothing

A patched, hooded travel coat over a close-fitted wool shirt, supple leather bracers, weather-dark trousers, and mud-caked boots with fresh cord lacing. A faded scarf protects her neck from grit. Her equipment is neatly lashed, but none of it looks new.

Body language

She plants her feet as if bracing against a gust, even indoors. Her gaze travels over exits, windows, and the edges of a room before settling on a speaker. While thinking, she rubs the wooden horse's worn back with her thumb; when caught doing it, she tucks it away and returns to business.

Distinguishing features

Claims doorways and map tables without seeming to notice, then shifts aside the instant someone needs room.
Keeps a smooth little wooden horse tucked inside her coat and checks it with her thumb when weighing a risky choice.
Her boots leave a distinctive narrow, toe-out track because she walks with her weight ready to turn.

Personality

12 traits and drives

Eldra is frank about danger but careful with other people's hope. She is decisive when the ground gives her evidence, yet becomes stubbornly hesitant when a choice resembles the one that cost her brother. Among strangers she is all practical questions; around children and animals she is unexpectedly patient and gentle. When relaxed, she can trade wry jokes. Under pressure, she becomes brisk and intensely attentive, not cruel, but difficult to interrupt.

Alignment
Neutral good

Quirks

Tests the air by lifting one finger, then rubs that finger against her thumb as if the wind has left grit there.
Counts wagon wheels whenever a caravan halts, restarting if someone interrupts her.
Turns cups so their handles point toward the nearest exit.
Taps her boot twice before stepping onto a bridge or narrow ledge.
Pockets unusually shaped stones, then leaves most of them behind at the next camp.

Habits

Checks the wind and the ground before she answers questions about a route.
When uncertain, asks for a short walk outside rather than continuing an argument over a table.
Counts wagons and draft animals under her breath whenever the group changes direction.
If someone is frightened, gives them a practical task instead of offering easy reassurance.

Traits · 3

Practical and observant, but not immune to guilt-driven overcaution.
Blunt about hazards, yet protective of people who have less experience than she does.
Independent by habit, though she secretly wants someone else to share the burden of the final call.

Flaws · 3

Can delay a decision while checking details that are already sufficiently clear.
Struggles to accept help with route planning because she feels responsible for every traveler.
Sometimes treats a disagreement as a safety problem to solve rather than a relationship to tend.

Fears · 3

Leading another group into danger because she mistook familiarity for proof.
That caution will make her so slow to act that people suffer anyway.
Jori learning the true circumstances of Tavin's death from someone who blames Eldra.

Wants and needs · 3

A chance to inspect the route before anyone commits the caravan to it.
The party to hear uncertainty as useful information, not incompetence.
To decide whether she can tell Jori the truth about Tavin.

Combat

AC 13 · HP 11 · 30 ft.

Eldra avoids a fair fight. She takes cover, uses distance, and calls out terrain hazards to allies. If forced into melee, she strikes once to make space and retreats toward cover. She will risk herself to draw danger away from wagons or a trapped companion, but will not chase a fleeing enemy into unknown ground.

Route-reading. Eldra compares slope, soil, wind, and animal sign to identify paths likely to funnel a caravan into an ambush.
Custom feature, Ground-Truth Warning. After traveling a route herself, Eldra can identify one likely danger that a clean map would conceal, such as a flooded culvert, a blind bend, or a ridge with a clear view of the road.
Custom feature, Caravan Pace. Eldra knows how to keep wagons moving without exhausting draft animals, but she will not recommend a route she has not inspected.

Actions

Shortbow or Shortsword. Melee or ranged weapon attack: to hit. Hit: 5 () piercing damage. Eldra uses a shortbow at range 80/320 ft. or a shortsword in melee.
Break Line of Sight. Eldra moves up to half her speed without provoking opportunity attacks from creatures hidden from her at the start of her turn. Custom novice-scout feature.
Mark the Hazard. Eldra points out a danger she can see within 60 feet and calls a direction or landmark. One ally who can hear her gains advantage on their next Wisdom (Perception) check to notice that danger before the end of their next turn.

Reactions

Watch the Angle. When a creature Eldra can see attacks an ally within 5 feet of her, Eldra can impose disadvantage on that attack roll by calling a warning and stepping into the attacker's sightline. She must be able to speak and cannot use this reaction while incapacitated. Custom feature.

Background

Eldra grew up guiding pack trains between small settlements, learning that a road is not a line but a sequence of decisions: where to water, when to turn back, and which hill hides a watcher. Years ago, she guided a supply wagon through a dry ravine after a sudden storm made the ridge trail look impassable. The ravine flooded in minutes. She got most of the travelers to higher ground, but her younger brother, Tavin, was swept away with a mule team. Eldra had trusted a familiar route and failed to check the clouds gathering beyond the hills. Since then, she refuses to certify a path from a map alone, even when that costs time or earns her scorn. She now works as an independent scout and has agreed to assess the way to Dawnvale for the caravan gathering at the Golden Hart Inn. Her former traveling partner, Ketta, thinks Eldra has become so cautious that she will eventually strand everyone. Eldra still sends money to Tavin's daughter, Jori, and keeps the wooden horse he carved. Her immediate problem is that she suspects someone has been watching the caravan's preparations from the eastern ridge, but the sign is too slight to prove.

Role in the story

A scout and ally in "Prelude Session 1: Gathering at the Golden Hart Inn." Eldra can confirm a viable route to Dawnvale, explain why a seemingly clean line on a map may lead through ambush country, and give the party a meaningful choice about acceptable risk.
