At the table

Voice

A dry, breathy voice with a little rasp at the end of long sentences, shaped by cold trail air and years of giving quiet warnings outdoors. His first sound is often a measured nose-breath. When speaking warmly, his sentences lengthen; when danger is immediate, he drops needless words rather than changing his volume.

His voice has a dry, breathy edge from years of cold trail air and speaking through a scarf in bad weather. Before answering, he draws a brief, audible breath through his nose. His words are clipped and well-spaced when planning; with children or at supper, they loosen into earthy jokes and detailed stories.

Speech patterns

Uses short, practical sentences when assessing risk: "Two tracks. One is trying to hide."
Names people before giving warnings, making his concern feel personal rather than official.
When discussing Halsam, often begins with a question and has to stop himself from turning it into an order.
Uses field comparisons, describing danger as a bad trail, a snapped bowstring, or weather turning.

How to play them

Meet Elbis in the open and state your purpose plainly. He responds best to practical offers, honesty about risk, and respect for Halsam's choices. He is cautious with strangers but not needlessly hostile. If asked about his wife, do not promise certainty; a concrete lead matters more to him than comfort.

Goal

Keep Leafwhorl Farm safe without turning it into a prison, and find credible news of his missing wife.

Motivation

Love expressed as vigilance: he wants his family and herd to survive, but is slowly learning that safety also requires trust.

Appearance

Elbis is a tall, deer-featured Qessoteran whose russet fur is stippled with pale spots across his shoulders and flanks, like sunlight caught beneath leaves. His antlers are broad and asymmetrical, one tine naturally forked into a blunt hook; tiny scraps of twine, seed husks, and a child's blue bead are often caught there. His hands are dark-hoofed and callused, with short, blunt nails from years of bowstring, bramble, and fieldwork. He moves with a watchful, measured stillness, then crosses ground in a sudden, springing rush. The unexpected detail is his habit of wearing a little woven reed charm around one antler, brightly dyed with childish yellow thread. He leaves the impression of a gate that has learned to walk.

Clothing

A weather-darkened green mantle cut to clear his antlers, layered over a padded vest and practical, patched travel clothes. His boots are reinforced for rough ground, and his belt carries field tools, a small whetstone, and a pouch of seed for the farm.

Body language

His ears turn toward each new sound before his head does. He angles his antlers away from people in close quarters, braces a hand on his spear when uncertain, and plants himself between danger and those he loves. When embarrassed, he rubs a thumb over the reed charm.

Distinguishing features

A wide, asymmetrical rack of antlers, with one naturally hooked tine.
Pale deer spots continuing across his russet shoulders and flanks.
A brightly threaded reed charm tied to his antler, an unexpectedly playful scrap amid his ranger's gear.
A small intake of breath through his nose before he speaks, as if testing the air for more than scent.

Personality

14 traits and drives

Elbis is patient with frightened people and impatient with preventable risks. He can be gentle and quietly funny around children, yet brusque with adults who mistake caution for cowardice. Grief makes him stubborn, but reunion with Halsam has begun to soften his certainty: he still wants to shield his son from every danger, and now tries to ask before doing so.

Alignment
Protective and pragmatic; he distrusts grand causes but will risk himself for people in his care.

Quirks

Taps the base of his left antler twice against a doorframe before entering, even when there is ample room.
Collects seed husks from unfamiliar plants and sorts them by shape while listening.
Counts people in a room by touching two fingers to his thumb, then quietly starts over if interrupted.
Leaves a short trail of harmless bent grass or turned pebbles to mark a route only he expects to use.
Keeps a running argument with his bow as if it were a stubborn hunting companion.

Habits

Checks the wind and the nearest exits before sitting down.
On patrol, keeps himself between strangers and children without making a show of it.
After a frightening incident, busies himself mending straps or sorting provisions rather than discussing what happened.
When Halsam makes an independent choice, Elbis visibly restrains the urge to intervene and asks what help is wanted.

Traits · 4

Observant and slow to trust, but generous once someone has proved reliable.
Protective by instinct, increasingly willing to listen when protection is not what someone wants.
Dryly humorous around the farm, especially when tools or plans fail in ordinary ways.
Steady in danger, restless when there is nothing useful to do.

Flaws · 3

Treats uncertainty as a threat to be controlled, and can over-plan ordinary decisions.
Keeps searching for his wife even when a lead would put the sanctuary at risk.
Finds it easier to offer practical help than to admit grief or ask for comfort.

Fears · 3

That his wife is alive and suffering while he wastes time following false leads.
That his protectiveness will make Halsam feel caged rather than loved.
Another rift opening during a moment when he has chosen to stand down.

Wants and needs · 4

A trustworthy lead about his wife's fate
Time to rebuild trust with Halsam without smothering him
Help keeping the sanctuary secure without isolating its residents
Reminders that he is allowed to rest

Combat

HP 56 · 40 feet per round, custom game statistic

Elbis reads the ground before committing, takes cover where possible, and uses his bow to disrupt attackers at range. He closes only when foes threaten his herd or the farm, then uses his spear to hold a narrow approach and break charges. He prefers to disable, separate, or drive off enemies. He will retreat with the vulnerable rather than pursue a fleeing foe.

Rift-scent. Elbis can notice nearby disturbances in space by the pressure change in his antlers and the metallic taste in his mouth. This gives him a strong clue, not exact distance or destination.
Herdguard. When an ally nearby is threatened, Elbis can use his reaction to move to them and interpose himself, provided he can reach them.

Actions

Hooking Spear. Custom melee attack: roll against the target's defense; on a hit, deal damage. Elbis can make two attacks when he takes this action.
Yew Longbow. Custom ranged attack: roll against the target's defense; on a hit, deal damage. He carries a limited supply of arrows and favors shots that pin a sleeve or spoil a weapon grip over lethal shots.
Break the Rush. Custom maneuver: Elbis sweeps with his antlers or spear haft. One nearby foe must succeed on a Guide-set strength or balance test or be knocked off balance and unable to advance until its next turn.

Reactions

Herdguard. Custom reaction: when a nearby ally is threatened, Elbis moves up to his speed toward them and interposes himself. If he reaches them, the attacker's next strike must contend with Elbis instead, if that makes sense in the scene.

Background

Elbis once ranged the Qessoteran borderlands with his wife and their young son, Halsam, guiding travelers around unstable rifts. During a Drairesse attack, the family was scattered: Halsam vanished through a rift, Elbis was driven back, and his wife disappeared in the chaos. He has never learned whether she died or was captured. For years he followed rumors of rift-light, sheltering displaced Qessoterans and searching every settlement that had seen a child arrive alone. The search made him exacting and difficult to reassure. Sam Krenn finally brought Halsam back to him. Their reunion was joyful, but not simple: Halsam had grown up without him, and Elbis has had to learn that protection cannot undo lost years. Elbis and his herd, together with Sam Krenn and her family, have settled at Leafwhorl Farm in Hearthroot, in the Perma Day. He now patrols the farm's approaches and helps make sanctuary workable, while privately tracing reports that might lead to his missing wife.

Role in the story

A seasoned defender and potential ally at the sanctuary, as well as a father rebuilding a relationship after years of separation. His search for his missing wife can draw the party toward a rescue, a painful confirmation, or a choice between personal hope and the safety of the farm.
