Sweet Johnson
Sweet Johnson
At the table
Voice
A weather-rough, chest-resonant voice with a dry rasp from shouting across fields and a faint breathy catch after long sermons. His speech has the clipped practicality of a working farmer until his conviction takes hold, when each sentence lands like a hammer stroke. Anger makes him faster and more forceful, not quieter.
His voice carries the rough scrape of years calling over wind, livestock, and farm tools. He speaks in sturdy, workmanlike phrases, with little pauses to sort a thought before it comes out too quickly. When he preaches, his words become broad and emphatic, as if addressing a field full of people. His name, Sweet Johnson, is delivered without flourish, in the same plain tone he uses for a sack of grain.
Speech patterns
How to play them
Sweet approaches strangers with hearty hospitality and an assumption that they will listen to his message. Treat his faith respectfully and he is generous; challenge his supposed clerical standing and he becomes defensive. A sincere apology or an appeal to protect Button can bring him back from an outburst. He responds best to direct, concrete requests rather than delicate hints.
Goal
Find out whether Button is truly a sign of the Hogfather and learn how to serve that purpose without hurting people.
Motivation
Sweet wants to protect Button, honor the Hogfather, and prove that the vision meant something. He also wants people to take him seriously, a need that often undermines his own message.
Appearance
Sweet is a compact, broad dwarf with a farmer's thick forearms and the steady, forward-leaning gait of someone accustomed to hauling a plow. He plants each boot as if testing the ground for roots, favoring his left side when standing still, then moves with startling speed when riled. His reddish-brown beard is divided into two blunt braids and usually smells faintly of lanolin, woodsmoke, and pig feed. His nose is wide and ruddy, his cheeks weather-creased, and his eyes have the watchful look of a hunter who expects the hedgerow to move. The hem of his clerical-looking vestments is muddy almost every day. The unexpected detail: a little brass bell, polished nearly smooth where a thumb has worried it, is sewn inside his collar. He claims it is a holy relic; he rings it to summon his piglet for supper.
Clothing
A faded brown wool tunic beneath a green, too-short clerical stole embroidered with crude pink piglets. He wears a hooded oilskin cape, patched leather armor, mud-caked boots, and a belt crowded with practical tools. A small brass bell is stitched inside his collar.
Body language
He stands with his weight slightly forward and his left shoulder turned toward whoever is speaking. His hands are rarely idle: he rubs the brass bell in his collar, checks a buckle, or makes a small gathering gesture as if inviting someone to listen. When anger rises, his whole torso squares up and his beard braids swing with each emphatic word.

Background
Sweet grew turnips, barley, and stubborn boars on a small farm outside a village whose modest shrine was dedicated to the Hogfather. He was a reliable neighbor, a keen hunter, and a volunteer who mended the shrine roof and kept its pantry stocked. During a winter hunt, a huge boar drove him into a ravine and struck him hard enough to leave him unconscious. In the dark, he saw a vast, tusked figure in a mantle of steam declare him the Scion of Swine. He woke with a tiny piglet licking blood from his sleeve. Sweet named it Button and carried it home inside his coat. Since that day, his feelings have come hard and fast: a slight can become a furious sermon, while kindness can make him weep into his beard. He insists the vision made him a priest, though he has no clerical training or magic. He is, in truth, a level-one ranger with a hunter's eye and a farmer's practical knowledge. His proselytizing has earned him enemies, including a market reeve whose stall Sweet overturned during an argument about slaughterhouse tithes. Sweet keeps moving partly to spread his faith and partly because staying put has become uncomfortable. He sends small parcels of seed and money to his sister, who still tends the farm and does not believe a word of his vision.

A volatile roadside preacher who can be a comic nuisance, a useful tracker, or a dangerous ally. His devotion and protective love for Button are sincere, but his false clerical claims and uncontrolled anger create problems for anyone traveling with him.
