Buffer-Six
Species
Gearforged
Appearance
Buffer-Six is a meticulously maintained Gearforged frame built from brushed steel and dark iron plates, each surface polished enough to catch the amber glow of tunnel lamps while still bearing the scars of hard service. Polished brass joints click softly beneath overlapping armor panels, and warm amber optical sensors narrow like patient eyes when it is calculating. A mechanical time-ticker is integrated into its chest, while a schedule drum etched with obsolete route numbers runs along its left forearm. Faint chalk maintenance marks cover the outer plating, including cramped notes left by dead engineers and route symbols from junctions that no longer exist. It moves with unnerving economy, never wasting a step, yet its head sometimes turns several seconds after a voice speaks, as though emotion has introduced a delay into its machinery. The unexpected impression is gentleness: despite its iron bulk and cutting tools, Buffer-Six handles fragile objects with the care of a jeweler repairing a child's music box.
“Measured, exact, and low-pitched, with careful pauses that resemble a signal system changing tracks. It uses technical language for ordinary matters and unexpectedly poetic language when discussing tunnels, memory, or lost workers.”

Distinguishing Features
Amber optical sensors that brighten when Buffer-Six experiences strong emotion
A chest-mounted time-ticker that loses exactly three seconds whenever it lies
A left forearm schedule drum etched with routes erased from Consortium maps
Chalk marks from former engineers preserved beneath layers of protective lacquer
A too-small red conductor's cap worn with solemn dignity
Voice
“A warm, resonant contralto filtered through a faint brass reverb, like a station announcement echoing through an empty underground terminal”
Clothing
A sleeveless charcoal engineer's coat hangs from a riveted shoulder harness, its hem patched with strips of old rail signal cloth. It wears a copper identification sash, a soot-dark utility apron, magnetic climbing boots, and a battered red conductor's cap that is much too small for its head.
Body Language
Buffer-Six remains almost perfectly still while listening, with only the rotation of its optical lenses revealing attention. Under stress, its fingers tap prime-numbered rhythms against its forearm schedule drum. When amused, it tilts its head exactly seven degrees. When frightened, it becomes more precise rather than more hurried.
