Neshir Sahti
At the table
“No. That is a bad place to build.”
Voice
His voice is a broad, chest-resonant rumble with a dry rasp at the edges, shaped by years of calling instructions across noisy work sites and speaking outdoors in cold weather. It carries easily without shouting. When he laughs, it breaks into two breathy bursts, as if he has surprised himself.
He speaks in plain, well-shaped sentences, with the practical vocabulary of a laborer who has spent decades explaining how to move heavy things safely. He uses measurements, comparisons, and names rather than grand abstractions. His words come at an unhurried pace, with a brief pause before a firm refusal.
Speech patterns
How to play them
Treat Neshir as a person with practical concerns, not a spectacle. He responds warmly to honest offers of help and to people who listen to local residents. He becomes guarded if anyone treats his size as proof that he must solve every physical problem. Ask about the flood meadow or his son to reach the worries he avoids naming.
Goal
Persuade Hushfield to preserve the flood meadow without depriving its struggling families of the work and income the proposed road would bring.
Motivation
To make himself useful without letting others mistake strength for invulnerability, and to keep the people of Hushfield safe without deciding their future for them.
Appearance
Neshir is so tall that most rooms make him stoop, and he moves through them with the practiced care of someone carrying a full bowl through a crowded kitchen. His face is long and weather-browned, with deep folds at the mouth and a broad nose that reddens in cold weather. His white hair is combed into a precise, glossy sweep that looks almost ceremonial, an unexpected vanity for a man who spends his days hauling barrels and mending fences. His huge hands are callused, his stride slow but springy, and his presence has the odd effect of making a busy room feel suddenly smaller.
Clothing
A russet wool coat with a repaired elbow, a thick linen shirt, work trousers tucked into high boots, and a broad leather belt bearing a small carpenter's square. His clothes are carefully brushed, though their hems are patched from years of labor.
Body language
He folds himself down to speak to seated people, though he sometimes forgets and looms over them. He rests both hands on his staff when listening, and gives a single deliberate nod when he has made up his mind. When ashamed, he rubs the polished brass cap of the staff with his thumb.

He uses his reach to keep armed attackers away, shoves foes off balance, and blocks narrow passages. He does not pursue fleeing enemies. If a battle threatens bystanders, he spends his effort creating an escape route rather than winning quickly.

Background
Neshir was born to a family of ordinary millers, and grew so quickly that his childhood was measured in doorframes and replaced boots. At twenty, he was hired to carry timber for a bridge. During a spring flood, the unfinished bridge buckled beneath a cart of children and Neshir held a split beam in place long enough for the passengers to crawl to safety. The praise embarrassed him; the memory of how easily the beam could have slipped never did. He later settled in the hill-town of Hushfield, where he became a laborer, unofficial watchman, and dependable hand at every funeral and roof-raising. His closest companion is Sella, a sharp-tongued retired midwife who refuses to let him turn every worry into a task. His estranged son, Tavin, left years ago to join a royal surveying expedition and has not written in three winters. Now the town council wants Neshir to endorse a new road that would cut through the old flood meadow. He knows the meadow is the only safe overflow ground, but the road promises work for people who badly need it.
Role in the story
A memorable local whose unusual height attracts attention, but whose real importance lies in his knowledge of the town, its people, and the dangerous ground beneath the proposed road. He can be an ally, a moral counterweight, or the first person to recognize that a seemingly ordinary construction plan will put the settlement at risk.
“At twenty, he was hired to carry timber for a bridge.”
- Faction
- No formal faction. He is a respected resident of Hushfield and an occasional volunteer for its night watch.
