At the table

Voice

A clear, chest-resonant voice with the slight rasp of someone who has called cues over loud rooms for years. His consonants are crisp enough to cut through a crowd, and his breath lands in phrases like a practiced count-in. Excitement makes him run words together; fear makes his instructions shorter and more concrete, not softer.

He speaks with the breath control of someone used to directing an ensemble over a crowd. His words arrive in clean, well-separated phrases, with sudden bursts of quick patter when he is excited. He uses rehearsal terms as metaphors, but when giving urgent instructions his diction turns plain and sharply practical.

Speech patterns

Uses rehearsal language in ordinary conversation: 'Again from the entrance,' or 'Hold that thought for two beats.'
Names practical details before making a promise, especially exits, timing, and who is responsible for what.
When trying to comfort someone, offers a specific next step instead of a vague reassurance.
Calls people 'friend' easily, but uses their full name when he is genuinely frightened for them.

How to play them

Welcomes strangers warmly and quickly finds a useful role for them. He respects competence more than status, asks direct practical questions, and will bargain openly if the stakes are clear. If he suspects someone is in danger, he tries to make a plan with them rather than ordering them to trust him.

Goal

Keep his ensemble together, get them out of the patron's dangerous contract, and learn the truth about the person he could not reach during the hall accident.

Motivation

He wants to prove that a band can protect people without becoming an instrument of the powerful, while learning to trust his companions with the burden of leadership.

Appearance

Fenwick has a round, open face that seems perpetually on the verge of announcing the next number in a dance. He takes up more room than his height suggests: elbows, baton, and broad gestures claim a generous circle, and he only notices when someone has to sidestep him. His hands are short-fingered and work-worn, with hard pads at the fingertips from years of baton drills and instrument handling. He moves in crisp little starts, planting his feet as if the floor is a stage that might shift under the orchestra. The unexpected detail is that he keeps a tiny folding paper theatre tucked in his coat and carefully repairs its painted figures between rehearsals.

Clothing

A sky-blue bandleader's coat, bright but faded at the cuffs, with sleeves too long that partly swallow his hands. The brass buttons are polished, the lining is patched with scraps of old concert posters, and a conductor's baton rides in his belt. He wears practical dark trousers and polished shoes with scuffed toes.

Body language

He conducts even when there is no music, tapping out rhythms on tables, doorframes, and his own coat buttons. His shoulders square when he gives instructions, but his weight shifts toward the nearest exit whenever a room gets loud. He often leans into a conversation with infectious enthusiasm, then remembers his size in the space and shuffles back half a step.

Distinguishing features

Round face framed by a fringe of chestnut curls that will not stay beneath his hat.
Oversized sky-blue coat with sleeves that cover part of his hands.
A habit of tapping time on any nearby surface, even while listening intently.
A tiny folding paper theatre, its painted figures repeatedly mended with careful scraps.

Personality

13 traits and drives

Fenwick is effusively welcoming when a room needs courage, but privately exacting about preparation and timing. He loves spontaneous music yet hates an improvised safety plan. In a crisis, his cheerful manner hardens into clipped, practical commands; once danger passes, he tries to make everyone laugh before anyone can ask how frightened he was.

Alignment
Neutral good

Quirks

Taps time on nearby objects, then apologizes to the object as if it were a musician who missed a cue.
Labels every instrument case with the name of the player who carried it last, even when the case has changed hands.
Folds food wrappers into tiny stage curtains while listening.
Keeps a private list of the best sounds in each town, such as a millwheel's clack or a baker's oven latch.
Practices introductions in the mirror but never the speeches he is actually expected to give.

Habits

Counts off a measure with his thumb whenever a conversation becomes tense.
Checks the nearest door and the ceiling rigging before agreeing to perform indoors.
After a successful show, quietly asks the youngest or least experienced player what they thought went wrong.
When embarrassed, turns the moment into a mock rehearsal note rather than admitting he feels exposed.

Traits · 3

Treats every performer as an individual voice, but can be controlling about the conditions under which they perform.
Makes people feel included quickly, then finds it difficult to admit when he needs help.
Thrives on lively audiences but distrusts anyone who pays for a performance and refuses to say what it is for.

Flaws · 3

Takes responsibility for problems that belong to the whole group.
Uses jokes and brisk instructions to dodge difficult personal conversations.
Can become so focused on timing and logistics that he misses what someone is feeling.

Fears · 3

A crowded room with only one exit.
Being praised for the riverside rescue when he knows he left someone behind.
That his band will mistake his confidence for proof that he has everything under control.

Wants and needs · 4

Needs his band to share responsibility instead of treating him as the sole decision-maker.
Wants to resolve the dangerous patron contract without putting the ensemble at risk.
Needs to speak honestly with Tilda Rusk about the riverside hall.
Wants to return to Bram Kett before his mentor's health worsens.

Combat

AC 15 · HP 45 · 25 ft.

Fenwick avoids being pinned down. He uses control and distraction to split enemy attention, protects allies with Cutting Words and healing, and saves his strongest damage spells for threats that have cornered the party. He prefers to make a clean escape possible rather than fight to the last note.

Actions

Baton. Melee Weapon Attack: to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 4 () bludgeoning damage. Fenwick uses the baton as a club.
Thunderclap Cue. Ranged Spell Attack: to hit, range 120 ft., one target. Hit: 13 () thunder damage.
Dissonant Whispers (1st-Level Spell). Fenwick chooses one creature within 60 feet that can hear him. It must make a Wisdom saving throw or be charmed until the end of Fenwick's next turn. The effect ends early if the target takes damage or if another creature uses an action to shake it awake.
Spellcasting. Fenwick casts a spell from his prepared spell list.
Bardic Inspiration. Fenwick performs a brisk, exacting flourish. Each creature of his choice within 30 feet that can hear him gains Bardic Inspiration, which it can use as described in his abilities.

Reactions

Cutting Words. When a creature Fenwick can see within 60 feet makes an attack roll, ability check, or damage roll, Fenwick expends one use of Bardic Inspiration and subtracts from the roll, potentially turning success into failure or reducing damage. He can use this after the roll but before the outcome is determined.
Custom Feature: Baton Parry. When a creature Fenwick can see within 60 feet targets him with an attack, he adds to his AC against that attack, potentially causing it to miss. He must expend one use of Bardic Inspiration.

Background

Fenwick grew up among traveling players, learning to keep a beat on wagon rails before he could read a score. At seventeen, he became assistant conductor to an aging human maestro, Bram Kett, who taught him that a bandleader's job was not to make every player sound alike but to hear what each one could do. During a disastrous midsummer performance in a crowded riverside hall, a rigging failure sent a lighting frame crashing into the audience. Fenwick abandoned the score and used a sharp, improvised rhythm to guide musicians and panicked guests through a service exit. Several lives were saved, but the hall's owner blamed the troupe and kept their wages. Fenwick's faith in grand institutions never recovered. He now leads a small ensemble that plays public squares, private feasts, and, when necessary, distraction music for people making an escape. He still exchanges letters with Bram, who has grown frail and wants Fenwick to come home. His violinist, Tilda Rusk, is his closest friend and fiercest critic; she thinks he takes every danger onto himself to prove the old rescue was not luck. Fenwick's current trouble is a broken contract with a wealthy patron who expects his band to perform at a politically dangerous gathering.

Role in the story
