Voice

A rough, chest-driven rasp with a gravelly edge, worn down by years of shouting through helmets and stone dust. His breath is usually steady and audible through his nose; when alarmed, it turns into a sharp whistle that cuts across his clipped words. He rubs the brass ring in his beard while trying to steady himself, often without noticing.

He speaks in a rough, chest-driven rasp shaped by years of shouting through helmets, smoke, and stone dust. His words arrive in short, sturdy phrases, with the occasional gravelly chuckle that sounds like a cart wheel rolling over loose rock. When rattled, his breath whistles through his nose between clipped sentences; when he is comfortable, his breath settles and his jokes grow longer.

Speech patterns

Uses blunt, practical comparisons drawn from smithing, stonework, and hauling.
Calls people by their trade or the task they are doing until he learns their names.
When joking, exaggerates his own size as if it were an inconvenient piece of equipment.
When discussing the Silt Gate, gives short answers and changes the subject to repairs or food.

How to play them

Barrel responds best to direct requests, practical work, and honest admissions of fear. He is suspicious of grand promises and dislikes being praised for bravery. Give him a concrete way to protect people and he will cooperate; ask him to leave vulnerable people behind and he will argue, stall, or openly defy the order.

Goal

Prevent the border company from driving refugees out of the mountain pass, while finding a way to protect the soldiers who would be punished for refusing the order.

Motivation

Barrel wants to make sure no one else is left calling for help behind a barrier he could have broken. He also wants to believe that his brother's death was not the price of a mistake.

Appearance

Barrel is exceptionally large for a dwarf, broad enough that doorframes seem to negotiate with him. His enchanted full plate is a moving thicket of blunt-tipped spikes, hooked blades, and overlapping iron scales, its surface dark as a forge after the fire is banked and polished bright at every point of impact. The armor gives off a low, kettle-like tick as its plates settle. Beneath it, he has a ruddy, weather-beaten face, a square jaw, and a great copper-brown beard braided into three thick ropes that are threaded through small brass rings. He advances with a forward pitch, as if every step is the beginning of a charge. When rattled, he takes quick, shallow breaths that whistle through his nose, and his left thumb repeatedly checks the same brass ring in his beard. Unexpectedly, he carries a tiny folded paper crane tucked inside his breastplate, carefully protected from the armor's spikes.

Clothing

A close-fitting charcoal gambeson beneath magical full plate covered with hooked blades and heavy spikes. Off duty, he wears a soot-brown work shirt, a leather apron, and a wool cap that never quite fits over his beard.

Body language

Barrel's shoulders remain angled toward the nearest opening, as though measuring a charge lane. He plants his feet wide and rocks heel to toe while listening. At ease, he rubs a thumb over the brass ring in his beard; when alarmed, the gesture becomes rapid and his breath whistles audibly through his nose. He leans close to hear people over the armor's constant faint ticking.

An enormous, three-rope copper-brown beard threaded with small brass rings.
His enchanted armor ticks softly as its interlocking plates shift.
A tiny paper crane is hidden safely inside his breastplate, an incongruous keepsake among the spikes.

Personality

12 traits and drives

Barrel is generous with effort but miserly with explanations. He jokes about his own size to put nervous people at ease, yet takes any threat to the vulnerable with frightening seriousness. In a calm camp he is patient, methodical, and easy to tease; under pressure he becomes direct and impulsive, mistaking speed for certainty. He wants people to trust him, but distrusts anyone who offers trust too easily.

Alignment
Chaotic Good

Quirks

He checks the brass ring in his beard with his left thumb whenever someone mentions a rescue or a trapped person.
He tests unfamiliar floors with one heel before entering a room, then pretends he was only stretching.
He names the different armor plates after foods, but only when repairing them alone.
He folds spare paper into cranes and wedges them into cracks in walls, claiming it keeps drafts from getting ideas.
He taps his breastplate twice before a charge, then apologizes to it if the landing is rough.

Habits

He puts himself between a threat and the least protected person in the room, even when doing so is tactically foolish.
Before a fight, he tests the floor with a heel and checks the straps at his wrists.
After a battle, he personally helps carry the wounded and gathers discarded weapons.
When he is frightened, his breathing turns into a sharp nasal whistle and his thumb worries the brass ring in his beard.
He treats a challenge as a promise to be met, but will stop fighting instantly if an opponent yields in earnest.

Traits · 3

He is warm toward people doing difficult work and impatient with people giving orders from safety.
He jokes when others are nervous, but his humor vanishes if someone is being bullied.
He is quick to charge into danger and slow to admit when the charge was a mistake.

Flaws · 3

He mistakes a willingness to suffer for proof that he is doing the right thing.
He commits to a charge before considering how he will get back out.
He avoids apologies by offering labor, money, or repairs instead.

Fears · 3

Being forced to choose which trapped people to save again.
That the armor's appetite for close violence is changing him into someone who cannot stop when the danger ends.
That Tavi will tell Dorrim's children their uncle chose the company over their father.

Wants and needs · 3

To keep the refugees safe without condemning his fellow soldiers for following orders.
To find a way to make amends to Tavi that does not treat money as a substitute for truth.
To learn whether the magic in his armor can be restrained without losing its protective power.

Combat

AC 22 · HP 220 · 25 ft.

Barrel dives into the tightest cluster of enemies, using his armor to punish anyone who crowds him. He targets the foe threatening an ally rather than the easiest target, uses Action Surge to break a dangerous line, and uses Shoulder-Check to shove enemies away from vulnerable companions. He prefers enclosed terrain where his charge cannot be sidestepped, but avoids leaping into a crowd if civilians are mixed among the enemy.

Remarkable Athlete. Barrel adds half his proficiency bonus to Strength, Dexterity, and Constitution checks that do not already include his proficiency bonus.
Custom, Spiked Plate Assault. Barrel's magically animated armor counts as a martial melee weapon for him. Its spikes and blades deal the listed damage, and his attacks with it are magical.
Custom, Groundbreaker. When Barrel falls at least 10 feet and lands within 5 feet of a creature, he can force that creature to make a Dexterity saving throw. On a failure, it takes bludgeoning damage and falls prone. Barrel takes no falling damage from this descent.

Actions

Multiattack. Barrel makes three Spiked Plate attacks.
Spiked Plate. Melee Weapon Attack: to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: piercing damage. If Barrel moved at least 10 feet straight toward the target immediately before the hit, the target takes an extra piercing damage. On a critical hit, the target also takes additional piercing damage from his Improved Critical feature.
Shoulder-Check. Barrel crashes bodily into a creature within 5 feet. The target must succeed on a Strength saving throw or take bludgeoning damage and be pushed up to 10 feet away. Barrel can move into the space the target left if it is unoccupied.
Action Surge. Barrel uses Action Surge, then makes three Spiked Plate attacks. He can use this action only once before finishing a short or long rest.

Reactions

Get Behind Me. When a creature Barrel can see hits an ally within 5 feet of him with an attack, Barrel moves up to 5 feet without provoking opportunity attacks and imposes disadvantage on the attack roll if he ends adjacent to the attacker. This custom reaction represents his instinctive body-blocking.
Barbed Intercept. When a creature enters Barrel's reach, he can make one Spiked Plate attack against it. On a hit, the creature's speed is reduced to 0 until the end of the current turn.

Legendary Actions

Grinding Advance. Barrel moves up to half his speed without provoking opportunity attacks from creatures he has hit with a melee attack this turn.
Armor-First Lunge (costs 2 actions). Barrel makes one Spiked Plate attack. On a hit, the target must succeed on a Strength saving throw or fall prone.

Background

Barrel GreatBeard was born to a family of stonecutters and armor-fitters in a dwarf-hold whose name was lost when its lower galleries flooded. He learned early that a good suit of plate must move with its wearer, not merely survive a blow. At thirty-seven, he joined a border company as a shield-bearer and became famous for closing distance before archers could loose a second volley. During the disastrous defense of the Silt Gate, a cave-in trapped his younger brother Dorrim and a dozen wounded soldiers behind a buckling portcullis. Barrel could hear them calling but could not reach them in his ordinary armor. He tore through the jammed mechanism with his bare hands, lost his shield, and dragged survivors out one at a time while the tunnel collapsed around him. His brother did not survive. Afterward, a reclusive smith named Oruña helped him build the enchanted spiked plate he now wears, designed to turn his whole body into a weapon and to let him break through a crush of enemies. Barrel insists he wears it to keep others from being cornered as his brother was. He still sends most of his pay to Dorrim's widower, Tavi, who has never forgiven him for returning alone. Now the border company has been ordered to clear a mountain pass where refugees are hiding, and Barrel is searching for a way to disobey without abandoning the people who still depend on his protection.

Role in the story

A formidable ally whose recklessness can save the party or complicate their plans. Barrel is also a living link to the border company's internal conflict and the refugee crisis. His hidden responsibility for the Silt Gate disaster can become a painful revelation that tests whether his companions judge him by his mistake or by what he does next.
