Uman Quispe
Uman Quispe
At the table
Voice
A firm, work-worn voice with a little rasp from dust and years of speaking over machinery. His breath smells faintly of rye and river air. When angry, he becomes more emphatic and physically direct, pointing to the broken part of a plan rather than raising his volume.
His words have the dry scrape of grain sliding through a chute, shaped by years of shouting over mill wheels and river noise. He clips endings when busy, gives instructions with the rhythm of repeated work, and uses plain comparisons drawn from tools, water, and bread. His voice carries easily across a room without sounding theatrical.
Speech patterns
How to play them
Approach him with a specific problem and a willingness to work. He distrusts flattery and vague promises, but responds to competence, fair dealing, and anyone who helps without making a show of it. Ask about the painted bird only after earning some trust.
Goal
Keep the mill independent, find the source of the black seeds, and make amends with Suyana before the grain factor forces a sale.
Motivation
He wants to be useful enough that nobody has to depend on promises, while quietly hoping someone will choose to stay beside him anyway.
Appearance
A broad-shouldered man with a fine, persistent veil of white flour in the creases of his neck and eyebrows. His skin is weather-browned and stippled with pale grain dust; his hands are thick and blunt, palms ridged from rope, wood, and millstone work. He stands with his weight settled slightly forward, as if bracing against a wheel's drag, and walks with a measured, rolling tread. His beard is clipped short to keep it clear of machinery. He smells of grain, river water, and sweat. Unexpectedly, he keeps a tiny, brightly painted wooden bird tucked into his apron pocket, carefully repaired whenever it chips.
Clothing
Dusty linen shirt with the sleeves rolled unevenly, a heavy leather apron darkened by water and grain oil, patched wool trousers, and river-worn boots. A small flour bag hangs at his belt.
Body language
Waits with his feet planted wide and his shoulders angled toward the nearest heavy object, as if prepared to catch a slipping load. He studies people from under lowered brows, but his hands are usually busy: tying a sack, brushing flour from a seam, or testing a tabletop for wobble.

AC 13 · HP 20 · 30 ft.Tries to keep a fight away from the mill machinery and civilians. He uses the maul to drive attackers back, takes cover behind sacks or a stone wall, and spends Second Wind only when he must hold a position. Background
Uman grew up at the Sesha mill, where his mother taught him to judge grain by its smell and his father taught him to listen for a failing gear. Years ago, a spring flood jammed the mill's sluice while three villagers were trapped in the lower works. Uman broke the wheel's retaining brace to divert the current, saving them but destroying the mill's old machinery and leaving the village short of flour through a hard winter. Since then, he has rebuilt the mill piece by piece and accepted blame without explaining that the brace was already cracked. His closest ally is Thalen, a ferryman who brings him river news; his sister Suyana left for the market town of Orua after accusing him of letting their father work himself to death. Now a grain factor is pressing him to sell the mill, and the river has begun carrying odd black seeds into the millrace.
Role in the story
A grounded village contact who can become an ally, a reluctant witness to the river's strange changes, or a local obstacle if the party threatens the mill or its people.
