Voice

Mias's voice has a clear, forward edge from years of projecting over crowds, with a slight rasp at the end of long performances from dry stage air and late nights. She places consonants carefully so lyrics carry to the back of a hall, then lets casual conversation tumble more loosely. When tense, she clips the ends of phrases as if closing a door.

Her diction is court-trained, but her phrasing retains the practical rhythm of a traveling performer who learned to project over market noise. She uses exact sensory details when describing music and people, and can turn a compliment into a warning without changing its courteous shape. When frightened, she becomes more formal rather than louder.

Speech patterns

She answers dangerous questions with a courteous question of her own.
She uses precise, lightly amused observations to reveal that she has noticed more than she lets on.
When discussing music, she speaks in concrete details about breath, wood, strings, and the room's acoustics.
If someone is being threatened, her sentences shorten and she stops using courtly titles.

How to play them

Mias begins with polished hospitality and offers a small, useful kindness. She tests whether visitors keep confidences by sharing a harmless but personal detail. If they show compassion toward servants or performers, she risks a more candid conversation. She will not reveal her evidence until she has reason to believe they can protect the people named in it.

Goal

Collect enough credible evidence of the lord's abuses and stolen songs to expose him without placing her family or the household servants in immediate danger.

Motivation

She wants to turn the influence of her music into protection for people who have none, while keeping her family out of the lord's reach.

Secret · GM only

Appearance

Willowy and long-limbed, Mias seems to occupy less space than she does. She glides through a crowded room with her elbows tucked close, yet her attention ranges widely, checking doorways, servants, and reflections in polished trays before it settles on a face. Her silver braids are threaded with small glass beads that click softly when she turns her head. Her smile arrives readily for everyone except the lord; whenever he looks her way, its corners draw taut as if caught on invisible thread. The surprising detail: she carries a tiny wooden bird in her sleeve and absentmindedly carves new feathers into it during formal gatherings.

Clothing

A midnight-blue gown of soft, heavy silk, cut to allow easy movement and lined with pockets hidden in its seams. She wears a narrow silver belt, sturdy low-heeled shoes, and a light shawl pinned so it can be pulled free quickly.

Body language

She keeps her shoulders narrow and her hands folded as if trying not to inconvenience anyone. Her gaze, however, travels constantly: exits, balconies, the lord's hands, then the person speaking. When she is genuinely amused, she leans forward and forgets to guard her space. When the lord addresses her, her smile tightens and one thumb presses hard against a glass bead.

Personality

13 traits and drives

Mias is generous with praise but suspicious of gifts, and she can make a room feel welcoming while privately mapping everyone in it. She enjoys mischief when the stakes are low, yet becomes controlled and exacting when someone is being cornered. She longs to be seen as an artist in her own right but fears the cost of being recognized as anything other than the lord's harmless ornament.

Alignment
Neutral Good

Quirks

She taps a glass bead twice before answering a question she considers dangerous.
She carves one tiny feather into her wooden bird whenever someone tells her a secret.
She tests a room's acoustics by humming a single low note while pretending to clear her throat.
She leaves a chair slightly angled toward the nearest exit, even at her own table.

Habits

At court she performs warmth and remembers every name, but watches the lord through reflections rather than meeting his eyes.
When a frightened person is being questioned, she finds a reason to interrupt and gives them time to think.
After a successful performance she slips away before the applause ends, then listens from the corridor to learn what people say once they think she is gone.

Traits · 4

She is curious about ordinary lives and remembers small details people assume no one noticed.
She jokes easily among performers but becomes measured and observant in rooms where power is being exercised.
She is compassionate toward the frightened, yet distrustful of anyone who offers help without asking what it will cost.
She wants applause for her own work and is ashamed of how much she still enjoys receiving it.

Flaws · 3

She takes on other people's risks without asking whether they want her help.
She delays direct confrontation until she has gathered more evidence, sometimes letting harm continue too long.
She can be cutting and manipulative when she believes someone powerful deserves it.

Fears · 3

That the lord will learn she is gathering proof and retaliate against her family.
That she will become so skilled at deception that she can no longer tell when she is being honest.
That her brother will mistake her silence for indifference.

Wants and needs · 3

A safe way to share her evidence without exposing the servants who helped her.
To hear her own songs performed under her name.
Reassurance that her family can leave the region if the lord retaliates.

Combat

AC 14 · HP 27 · 30 ft.

Mias avoids the front line. She begins with Faerie Fire or Dissonant Whispers to spoil enemy positioning, then uses Vicious Mockery and Cutting Words to blunt attacks against allies. She saves Healing Word for an ally who falls and uses Suggestion to end a fight when an opponent can be turned aside. If trapped, she retreats toward cover while using Bardic Inspiration to keep allies effective.

Bardic Inspiration (d6): As a bonus action, Mias can inspire one creature within 60 feet that can hear her. The creature can add the die to one ability check, attack roll, or saving throw made within the next 10 minutes. She can do this four times per long rest.
Song of Rest (d6): During a short rest, Mias can perform soothing music. Allies who spend Hit Dice to regain hit points regain an extra hit points.
Expertise. Mias doubles her proficiency bonus on Persuasion and Stealth checks.
College of Lore. Mias gains proficiency in three additional skills and can use Cutting Words to disrupt an enemy's attack, ability check, or damage roll.

Spells

Vicious Mockery (cantrip, enchantment). A distracting string of insults and odd observations forces one creature that can hear Mias within 60 feet to make a Wisdom saving throw or take psychic damage and have disadvantage on its next attack roll.
Cure Wounds (level 1, evocation). A creature Mias touches regains hit points. This spell cannot heal undead or constructs.
Suggestion (level 2, enchantment). Mias speaks a magically persuasive suggestion to a creature that can hear and understand her. On a failed Wisdom saving throw, it follows the suggestion for up to 8 hours, provided the course of action does not obviously harm it.
Dissonant Whispers (level 1, enchantment). One creature within 60 feet that can hear Mias must make a Wisdom saving throw. On a failure, it takes psychic damage and immediately uses its reaction, if available, to move as far as its speed allows away from Mias.
Faerie Fire (level 1, evocation). Creatures in a 20-foot cube within 60 feet must make a Dexterity saving throw. Objects and creatures in the area are outlined in light; affected creatures grant advantage on attack rolls against them, cannot benefit from invisibility, and shed dim light in a 10-foot radius.
Comprehend Languages (level 1, divination). Mias touches one willing creature, granting it the ability to understand the literal meaning of any spoken language it hears for 1 hour.
Speak with Animals (level 1, divination). Mias speaks a short phrase and touches a creature or object. For 8 hours, the target can be understood by creatures that know at least one language.

Actions

Dagger. Melee Weapon Attack: to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: bludgeoning damage.
Light Crossbow. Ranged Weapon Attack: to hit, range 80/320 ft., one target. Hit: piercing damage.
Glass-Refrain (Custom). Mias performs a cutting refrain at a creature she can see within 60 feet that can hear her. The target must make a Wisdom saving throw or take psychic damage and have disadvantage on the next attack roll it makes before the end of its next turn. This is a custom action, not a standard bard feature.

Reactions

Cutting Words. When a creature Mias can see within 60 feet makes an attack roll, ability check, or damage roll, she can expend one use of Bardic Inspiration and roll her d6, subtracting the result from the creature's roll. She can choose to use this after seeing the roll but before the DM determines its outcome. The creature must be able to hear her.

Background

Mias Eraelith was raised among traveling performers who played harvest fairs and ferry landings. Her mother, a skilled harpist, taught her that a song could make strangers share a fire; her father, a quiet stage carpenter, taught her to notice which doors were real and which were painted scenery. As a teenager, Mias accepted work at court, believing it would give her family a stable home. The lord's household seemed gracious until she recognized a melody she had written for her mother among the private songs he claimed to have composed. When she challenged him, he smiled and reminded her that a singer without patronage could be made to disappear from every stage in the region. She stayed, outwardly compliant, and began quietly collecting evidence of his thefts and threats. A formative turning point came when a frightened kitchen servant was blamed for a missing jewel. Mias diverted suspicion with a performance long enough for the servant to escape, then discovered the jewel had been planted by the lord's steward to punish a witness. Since then, she has used her songs to shield people with less power, though she still hesitates when protecting someone might cost her family their security. Her mother now travels with a troupe, while her younger brother is apprenticed to a riverboat maker and believes Mias has a comfortable life.

Role in the story

A court performer who can become an ally, informant, or catalyst for a scandal. Her evidence offers the party a way to challenge the lord, but exposing it carelessly could endanger the household workers and her family.
